Experience the grandeur of King George Falls and savor outback Christmas Eve feasts in the heart of the Australian Kimberley region.
Christmas Eve at King George Falls
As I sit here, reflecting on the day, I can't help but smile. Today was Christmas Eve, and what a unique one it was! The Bungle Bungle Range has a way of making every moment feel extraordinary, but experiencing it with my friends during the festive season has been truly magical. It's a far cry from the traditional Christmas celebrations back in Heidelberg, but I wouldn't trade this adventure for anything.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at the Bungle Bungle Caravan Park & Tour Company. The morning air was crisp, carrying the scent of eucalyptus and the promise of a day filled with natural wonders. After breakfast, we prepared for our main adventure: a visit to the majestic King George Falls.
Experience the breathtaking beauty of King George Falls, a stunning waterfall in the heart of Kimberley, Western Australia, perfect for nature lovers and adventurers.
The journey to King George Falls was an experience in itself. Given the remote location, accessing the falls is typically done by air or by boat. We opted for a scenic flight from Kununurra, which offered breathtaking views of the Kimberley region. As the small plane soared over the landscape, I was mesmerized by the vastness and beauty of the outback. The red gorges, ancient sandstone cliffs, and winding rivers created a tapestry of colors and textures that stretched as far as the eye could see.
As we approached King George Falls, I was struck by the sheer scale and grandeur of the twin waterfalls. The water cascaded down the towering cliffs, creating a thunderous roar that echoed through the gorge. The falls are known as Western Australia's highest twin waterfalls, with the King George River plunging approximately 80 to 100 meters over sandstone cliffs into tidal waters. The sight was truly awe-inspiring, a testament to the raw power and beauty of nature. The falls were featured in Baz Luhrmann's 2008 film, Australia.
The best view comes after the hardest climb.
The King George River holds high cultural significance to the Balanggarra people, for whom the falls are the male and female Wunkurr (Rainbow Serpents). Knowing this added a deeper layer of meaning to our visit, a connection to the ancient history and traditions of this land.
After taking in the breathtaking views of King George Falls, we flew back to the Bungle Bungle Range, our hearts full of wonder and gratitude. For lunch, we stopped at the Bungle Bungle Savannah Lodge, where we enjoyed a delicious meal amidst the serene surroundings of Purnululu National Park. The lodge is known for its friendly staff and excellent food, and it certainly lived up to its reputation.

It's always nice to have a little memento to take back home, something to spark memories of the amazing places we've seen and the experiences we've shared.

The temperature in December in the Bungle Bungles can range from an average low of 25.7°C to an average high of 38°C. Rainfall is also higher in December.
Sitting around the dinner table with my friends, sharing stories and laughter, I felt a deep sense of contentment. It wasn't the traditional Christmas Eve I was used to, but it was perfect in its own way. Being surrounded by the stunning landscapes of the Bungle Bungle Range, with the people I cherish, made this Christmas Eve one I will never forget.
Tomorrow, on Christmas Day, we plan to visit the Kungkalanayi Lookout. I’m excited to see what new wonders await us as we continue our adventure in this remarkable corner of the world. I am looking forward to having breakfast at the Bungle Bungle Wilderness Lodge, lunch at the Bungle Bungle Caravan Park & Tour Company and dinner at the Bungle Bungle Savannah Lodge.
As I prepare for sleep, I am reminded of how fortunate I am to be able to experience this unique landscape with my friends. Although I missed Thomas and Leela, I know that they are with me in spirit. I am very thankful for technology that allows me to communicate with them regularly, despite the distance.
The Bungle Bungle Range has a way of stripping away the unnecessary and reminding you of what truly matters: connection, adventure, and the simple beauty of the natural world. And as I drift off to sleep under the Kimberley stars, I can't help but feel a sense of peace and gratitude for this incredible journey.
I must remember to pack the insect repellent and binoculars that I forgot.
