Marrakech Moments: History, Nature, and Nightlife

Today was a delightful mix of historical exploration, natural beauty, and a taste of Marrakech's nightlife. It’s amazing how much variety this city offers! I'm especially grateful for these moments with Thomas and Leela, creating memories that we’ll cherish long after we return to Heidelberg.



Our day began with a lovely breakfast at Le Nid´cigogne.
The restaurant had a charming atmosphere, and the Moroccan pastries were the perfect start to a day of exploring. It reminded me of the small, cozy cafes back in Heidelberg, where Thomas and I often enjoy a quiet breakfast before our busy days begin.
Leela, of course, loved the sweet treats and was energized for our adventures ahead. I am glad we found this place as it has a rating of 4.7/5.

After breakfast, we ventured to El Badi Palace.
The palace is a sprawling ruin, but its vast courtyard and towering walls spoke volumes of its former grandeur. I tried to imagine what it must have been like in its heyday, adorned with gold and precious stones.
Leela enjoyed running around the open spaces, her laughter echoing through the ancient walls. Thomas, ever the history enthusiast, read aloud from our guidebook, painting a vivid picture of the palace’s past. It was fascinating to learn that Sultan Ahmad al-Mansur commissioned the palace in the late 16th century, funded by cash ransomed from Portugal following the Battle of the Three Kings.
The storks nesting atop the walls added a touch of whimsy to the scene. It reminded me of the Heidelberg Castle, a majestic ruin that similarly evokes a sense of history and wonder.

Next on our itinerary was Cyber Park Arsat Moulay Abdesalam.
This park was a welcome oasis of green in the middle of the city. Leela was thrilled to discover the park’s modern amenities, like the free Wi-Fi hotspots and interactive digital displays. It was a funny contrast to the historical sites we had visited earlier.
We strolled through the rose garden, enjoying the fragrant blooms and the peaceful atmosphere. The park provided a relaxing respite, a place where tradition and modernity seamlessly blended. I even managed to video call my parents in Nashik, sharing a glimpse of our Marrakech adventure with them.
The park is described as 'ornamental gardens dating to the 18th century, now featuring fountains, lush foliage & walkways'.

For lunch, we dined at Le Jardin Restaurant Marrakech Medina.
The restaurant was in a beautiful, green-tiled riad, filled with lush plants and a tranquil ambiance. It felt like stepping into a hidden garden. We enjoyed traditional Moroccan dishes, savoring the flavors of tagine and couscous. Leela, surprisingly, was quite adventurous with her food choices, trying everything we ordered. The restaurant is owned by Kamal Laftimi, who also owns Café des Épices, owns Le Jardin. The enclosed green-tiled courtyard is loaded with plants, and it is beautiful and calm during the day.
The experience reminded me of the vibrant, plant-filled restaurants in India, where the connection to nature enhances the dining experience. The service was fast and the staff very energetic.

As the sun began to set, we prepared for our evening out. Dinner was at Rooftop Restaurant Koulchi Zine -Marrakech Medina.
The rooftop setting offered stunning views of the city, and the atmosphere was lively and festive. We enjoyed a delicious meal, accompanied by traditional Moroccan music. The ambiance was perfect for a family dinner, creating a warm and joyful experience.

Finally, after dinner, Thomas and I decided to experience Marrakech’s nightlife at BAROMETRE COCKTAILS.
Leela stayed back at the riad with a trusted babysitter. This bar is renowned for its after-dinner drinks and vibrant atmosphere. The bar had a speakeasy vibe, with creative cocktails and a sophisticated ambiance. It was a fun and unique experience, a departure from our usual evenings in Heidelberg. The bartenders are great and so were the drinks. It was the perfect way to cap off a day of exploration and cultural immersion. I sampled one of their signature cocktails, while Thomas enjoyed a classic Negroni. The music was a bit loud on the Saturday night, but the service was good. The staff are very welcoming and the food is excellent and imaginatively presented.
It reminded me of some of the trendy bars in Berlin, where innovation and creativity are celebrated. The visit was perfect from start to finish, and the staff greeted us kindly and could simply not do enough for us to make our visit comfortable and enjoyable.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, we plan to explore the Mellah and visit the Museum of La Koutoubia. I’m excited to delve deeper into Marrakech’s history and culture, and I'm sure Leela will enjoy discovering new sights and sounds. For dinner we are planning to go to Al Fassia Guéliz, and I am very keen to try their traditional dishes.



Today was a reminder of why we love to travel – the opportunity to experience new cultures, discover hidden gems, and create lasting memories with our family. Marrakech continues to surprise and delight us at every turn. I’m so glad we decided to embark on this adventure!
