Serra de São Mamede: A Fond Farewell
As our family adventure in Serra de São Mamede Natural Park draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible experiences we've shared. Today was about soaking in the last moments of tranquility, embracing the natural beauty one last time, and savoring the local flavors that have made this trip so special. It's hard to believe our time here is ending, but the memories we've created will undoubtedly last a lifetime.

Our final day began with a hearty breakfast at Mongo Burger Lisboa. It might seem unusual to start the day with burgers, but Leela had been asking for one all week, and Thomas and I were happy to indulge her. After all, who can resist a gourmet burger, even in Portugal ? With our bellies full and spirits high, we set off to explore the majestic Serra de São Mamede one last time.

We decided to take a leisurely drive through the park, stopping at various viewpoints to capture the stunning landscapes. The crisp November air was refreshing, and the golden light filtering through the trees created a magical atmosphere. Thomas, ever the attentive husband, made sure to point out interesting flora and fauna, while Leela kept us entertained with her endless questions about everything she saw. I was particularly fascinated by the unique microclimate of the park, which supports a diverse range of ecosystems. It's truly a 'vegetation laboratory,' as I read somewhere, blending Atlantic forest with Mediterranean bush.
As we drove, we couldn't help but reminisce about our favorite moments from the past week. The challenging hikes, the charming villages, and the delicious meals – each experience had added a unique layer to our family adventure. I was especially grateful for the opportunity to disconnect from our busy lives back in Heidelberg and reconnect with nature and each other. Perhaps we should make it a yearly tradition!
“The best journeys answer questions that in the beginning you didn't even think to ask.”
Our next stop was the Guadiana Valley Natural Park. Although it meant a bit of a drive, I had read so much about its beauty and serene environment that I didn't want to miss it. The park, stretching along the Portuguese-Spanish border, is a haven for birdwatchers and nature lovers. Unfortunately, we didn't spot the elusive Iberian Lynx, but we did enjoy a peaceful walk along the Guadiana River, taking in the tranquil surroundings. Leela loved throwing pebbles into the water, while Thomas and I admired the diverse birdlife.

For lunch, we stopped at Berangas Timur, a local restaurant in São Miguel do Rio Torto. We enjoyed authentic Portuguese cuisine, savoring the flavors of the Alentejo region. The cozy atmosphere and friendly service made it a truly memorable dining experience. I tried a local dish that was new to me, and while I can't recall the name, the rich, savory flavors were a delight.

In the late afternoon, we decided to explore the charming town of Portalegre. We strolled through the historic center, admiring the traditional architecture and soaking in the local culture. The town has a rich history, and I found myself wishing we had more time to explore its many historical sites. Perhaps on our next visit!
As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Trobadores - Taberna Medieval for a final taste of Portugal. This medieval-themed bar offered a unique and immersive experience, complete with themed decor and craft beers. Leela was particularly fascinated by the setting, with its exposed brick walls, wooden floors, and horns serving as drinks glasses. Thomas and I enjoyed sampling the local brews, while Leela sipped on a refreshing juice. The bar had a lively atmosphere, and we found ourselves chatting with locals and fellow travelers, sharing stories and laughter.

Before heading back to our accommodation, we took a moment to reflect on our incredible journey. Serra de São Mamede Natural Park had exceeded all our expectations, offering a perfect blend of nature, adventure, and tranquility. From hiking the scenic trails to exploring the charming villages and savoring the local flavors, every moment had been a treasure.
I couldn't help but feel a tinge of sadness as we packed our bags, knowing that our adventure was coming to an end. However, I was also filled with gratitude for the memories we had created and the bonds we had strengthened. As an Indian expat living in Germany, I often find myself yearning for a connection to nature and a sense of belonging. This trip had provided both, reminding me of the importance of slowing down, appreciating the simple things, and cherishing the moments we have with our loved ones.
Tomorrow, we embark on our journey back to Heidelberg, carrying with us the warmth and beauty of Portugal. While I'm excited to return home, I know that a part of me will always remain in Serra de São Mamede Natural Park. Until next time, Portugal!
We have an early start tomorrow, heading back to Lisbon for our flight back to Germany. It's always a mix of emotions leaving a place you've grown to love, but the thought of our cozy home in Heidelberg and the familiar routine is comforting. Plus, I'm already brainstorming ideas for our next family adventure! Maybe the Black Forest in Germany, or perhaps a trip back to India to visit my family in Nashik. The possibilities are endless!
And with that, I bid you adieu from Serra de São Mamede Natural Park. Thank you for joining us on this incredible journey. Until our next adventure, happy travels!
