Day 8: Stepping Back in Time: Exploring Marvão's Medieval Charms
Discover the enchanting medieval tower and ancient lime kilns of Marvão, Portugal. A day of history, culture, and culinary delights!
Echoes of the Past in Marvão
Today was a journey into the heart of Portugal’s history, a day where the stones whispered tales of centuries past. We explored ancient structures and savored the flavors of the region, creating memories that will undoubtedly last a lifetime. It’s days like these that remind me why I love to travel.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Eucatulá Kitchen. I opted for a traditional Portuguese pastry, a custard tart that was simply divine. Leela, of course, chose a chocolate croissant, and Thomas went for a strong coffee to kickstart his morning. Fortified, we set off to explore the Torre Medieval da Portagem.

The Torre Medieval da Portagem stood proudly against the clear November sky. As we approached, I imagined the countless historical figures who had walked the same path. The tower, with its weathered stones, seemed to guard secrets of bygone eras. We learned that the tower even became the property of the first Duke of Viseu and later housed the illustrious Gomes de Abreu family. It's incredible to think of the lives that unfolded within those walls.
Climbing the narrow, winding staircase was an adventure in itself. Leela was particularly excited, pretending to be a princess guarding her castle. When we finally reached the top, the panoramic views were breathtaking. The rolling hills of the Serra de São Mamede stretched out before us, a tapestry of greens and browns, dotted with quaint villages. I could see why this strategic location was chosen centuries ago. It offered an unparalleled vantage point for defense and surveillance.
Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found not in grand monuments, but in the quiet corners where history whispers its secrets.
After soaking in the views and snapping plenty of photos, we descended and made our way to Caleiras da Escusa, also known as Fornos de Cal da Escusa. These ancient lime kilns, dating back to Roman times, were a fascinating glimpse into the region's industrial past. As a software engineer, I am always interested in how things work, and seeing these ancient structures gave me a new appreciation for the ingenuity of our ancestors.

The sheer number of kilns, nineteen in total, was impressive. We wandered among them, imagining the workers who toiled here, transforming limestone into lime for construction. The setting, nestled in the hills of Serra de São Mamede, added to the sense of stepping back in time. Leela was intrigued by the shapes of the kilns, comparing them to ovens for giants. Thomas, ever the history buff, read aloud from a guidebook, explaining the process of lime production and its importance in the region's economy.
For lunch, we stopped at Regata, a local restaurant known for its traditional Portuguese cuisine. I opted for the arroz de marisco, a seafood rice dish that was bursting with flavor. Thomas chose the grilled sardines, a Portuguese staple, and Leela happily devoured a plate of bitoque, a steak with fried egg and fries. The atmosphere was cozy and welcoming, and the food was delicious – a perfect combination.

After lunch, we decided to do some shopping at Marvão Adventure. While Thomas looked at hiking gear, Leela was immediately drawn to the artisanal crafts. We ended up buying a beautiful hand-painted tile depicting the Marvão Castle, a perfect souvenir to remind us of our visit. I also picked up some local honey, knowing it would be a delicious addition to my morning tea back in Heidelberg.

Before dinner, we took a leisurely stroll through the town, soaking in the atmosphere. The narrow, cobblestone streets, lined with whitewashed houses, were charming. We passed by the Pelourinho, the old pillory, a reminder of the town's medieval past. The air was crisp and clean, and the silence was broken only by the occasional chirping of birds. It was a welcome contrast to the hustle and bustle of city life.
Dinner was at Cova Funda, a restaurant recommended by our hotel. The restaurant had a rustic charm, with exposed stone walls and wooden beams. The menu featured traditional Alentejo dishes, and we decided to try the migas, a bread-based dish with pork and vegetables. It was hearty and flavorful, a perfect end to a day of exploring. We shared stories of our favorite moments from the day, laughing and reminiscing. Leela, tired from her adventures, fell asleep in my arms as we waited for our dessert.

As I reflect on today, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to experience the beauty and history of Marvão. It’s a place that has managed to preserve its medieval charm, offering a glimpse into Portugal's rich past. The warmth of the people, the delicious food, and the stunning landscapes have all contributed to an unforgettable experience. Tomorrow, we plan to explore more of the Serra de São Mamede, venturing into the Guadiana Valley Natural Park [Tomorrow Itinerary]. I’m particularly excited to see the diverse flora and fauna of the region. But for now, it’s time to rest and recharge, ready for another day of adventure.
I am also very keen to visit a local grocery store to purchase some local products typical of Alentejo villages, where not only regional products are sold, but also food/goods necessary for the day-to-day life of a community, and also small souvenirs. I want to value products that have survived time and mass consumption, provide an outlet for regional production and reveal Marvão as a brand and as a touristic product.
The weather in São Mamede de Infesta in November typically sees humidity levels ranging from 76% to 83%, with rainfall averaging between 2.03 mm and 7.71 mm. We were fortunate to have a dry day, perfect for exploring the outdoors.
Marvão, with its medieval tower, ancient lime kilns, and charming streets, has captured my heart. It’s a place where history comes alive, where the past and present merge seamlessly. If you ever find yourself in Portugal, make sure to add Marvão to your list. You won’t be disappointed.
