Day 8: Elmina's Farewell Embrace: A Day of Reflection and Revelry
Saying goodbye to Elmina with serene parks, local brands, and vibrant nightlife, cherishing the memories made with family in Ghana.
A Fond Farewell to Elmina
As our journey in Elmina draws to a close, today was a day of reflection, exploration, and celebration. It’s hard to believe our eight days here are already over. We packed in as much as we could, soaking up the culture, history, and flavors of this vibrant town. Today was all about savoring the last moments and creating lasting memories with Priya and Devon.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at African Pot. I was looking forward to try their jollof rice which is one of their most popular dishes. It was a great way to start the day.
OLA Roman Catholic Park: A Morning of Serenity
Our first stop was the OLA Roman Catholic Park. It was a tranquil escape from the bustling town. The park offered a serene environment, perfect for a morning stroll and some quiet reflection. Devon, full of energy as always, enjoyed running around the open spaces, while Priya and I took in the peaceful atmosphere. We aren't Catholic ourselves, but we could still appreciate the sense of community and peace that the park offered. It was a refreshing start to our final day in Elmina. The quietude of the park allowed me to reflect on the experiences we’ve had here, from the emotional visit to Elmina Castle to the lively interactions with the local people. It’s a place that encourages contemplation, and I found myself thinking about the ties between Elmina and the Caribbean, and the shared history of the transatlantic slave trade.

Sometimes, the most profound journeys end not with a bang, but with a whisper of reflection and gratitude.
Discovering Local Gems at Brand Elmina
Next on our itinerary was Brand Elmina. I was interested in seeing what local crafts and goods they had on offer. Brand Elmina is dedicated to offering amazing experiences and finding the best places to eat and hang out. It was a great opportunity to support local artisans and find unique souvenirs to take back home. We spent a delightful couple of hours browsing through the various stalls, admiring the craftsmanship and artistry on display. Priya was particularly drawn to some of the colorful fabrics, while Devon found a beautifully carved wooden toy that he immediately fell in love with. I picked up a couple of hand-painted bowls, perfect for serving up some Trini callaloo when we get back home. Supporting local businesses is important to me, especially in places like Elmina where tourism plays a vital role in the economy. It felt good to contribute in a small way to the community and take home something that truly represented the spirit of Elmina.

A Taste of Elmina: Lunch at Gramsddel J Restaurant
For lunch, we headed to Gramsddel J Restaurant. We were looking forward to tasting some more authentic Ghanaian cuisine. Gramsddel J is known for its welcoming ambiance and authentic Ghanaian flavors. The restaurant was easy to find at 78 High Rd. We ordered jollof rice, banku with tilapia, and spicy goat stew. The restaurant was adorned with local art and decor, creating a cozy setting. The staff were friendly and made us feel at home. Devon especially enjoyed the jollof rice, declaring it even better than the version I make (a statement I’m still trying to come to terms with!). Priya savored the banku with tilapia, commenting on the freshness of the fish and the subtle spices. I relished the spicy goat stew, a hearty and flavorful dish that perfectly encapsulated the essence of Ghanaian cooking. It was a satisfying meal that left us all feeling content and ready for the afternoon’s adventures.

Relaxing by the Coast: Seatop Bar
In the late afternoon, we decided to unwind at Seatop Bar. Seatop Bar offered a lively ambiance paired with breathtaking ocean vistas. It was the perfect spot to relax and soak up the local culture. With a diverse selection of spirits available, Seatop Bar is a must-visit destination. Devon enjoyed a soda while Priya and I sipped on some local beers, enjoying the cool breeze and the sound of the waves. The bar had a laid-back vibe, with locals and tourists mingling and sharing stories. It was a great way to unwind and reflect on our experiences in Elmina. As the sun began to set, the sky was painted with vibrant hues of orange and pink, casting a magical glow over the ocean. It was a moment of pure bliss, a perfect ending to a day of exploration and relaxation.

Farewell Dinner at One Africa Health Resort
For our final dinner in Elmina, we chose One Africa Health Resort. I had heard great things about their restaurant, and we were eager to experience it for ourselves. The resort was a bit outside of town, but the drive was well worth it. As we arrived, we were greeted by the friendly staff and shown to our table. The atmosphere was serene and inviting, with lush greenery and the sound of gentle music creating a tranquil ambiance. We opted for the buffet, eager to sample a variety of Ghanaian dishes. From flavorful stews to grilled seafood, every dish was a culinary delight. Devon, always the adventurous eater, tried everything on offer, while Priya and I savored each bite, appreciating the authentic flavors and spices. The meal was a perfect culmination of our culinary journey through Elmina, a final taste of the rich and diverse cuisine that we had come to love.
