Day 9: Coastal Escapes and Culinary Delights: A Day of Discovery in Manly
Explore Sydney's stunning Manly Beach, savor exquisite meals, and unwind at a hidden rum bar for an unforgettable day.
Manly Magic: Beaches, Views, and a Touch of Rum
Today was all about embracing the coastal charm of Sydney. We ventured out to Manly, a place I'd heard so much about, and it truly lived up to the hype. From the golden sands of Manly Beach to the serene beauty of Shelly Beach and the historical significance of North Head Sanctuary, it was a day packed with diverse experiences. Plus, we managed to sneak in some incredible meals and a little taste of the Caribbean in a hidden Sydney bar.
Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Botanic House. Priya and Devon were especially excited about this, as I had told them it was highly recommended by Chef Luke Nguyen. Nestled within the Royal Botanic Garden, the setting was idyllic. The restaurant itself was light and airy, and the service was impeccable. We opted for the tasting menu, which was a fantastic way to sample a variety of dishes. I particularly enjoyed the fresh berries that came with the caramel pudding; a perfect start to a day of exploration.
After breakfast, we hopped on a ferry to Manly. The ride itself was a treat, offering stunning views of the Sydney Opera House and the Harbour Bridge. As we approached Manly Wharf, the vibrant atmosphere was immediately apparent. The Corso, a pedestrian mall lined with surf shops, boutiques, and pubs, was bustling with activity. It felt like a world away from the city center.
Our first stop was, of course, Manly Beach. The beach stretches for about three kilometers, and even though it's May, there were plenty of people soaking up the sun. Devon was particularly thrilled, as he loves the beach. We spent a couple of hours swimming, building sandcastles, and simply enjoying the refreshing ocean breeze. The towering Norfolk pines provided ample shade, which was a welcome respite from the sun. It reminded me a bit of home, as we have similar trees lining some of the beaches back in Trinidad.

The best view comes after the hardest climb.
Next, we took a leisurely stroll along the coastal path to Shelly Beach. This smaller, more secluded beach is located in Cabbage Tree Bay, an aquatic reserve. The snorkeling here is supposed to be fantastic, but we decided to simply relax on the sand and enjoy the tranquility. Devon was fascinated by the rock pools, teeming with marine life. I even spotted a few people paddleboarding in the calm waters.

After our beach adventures, we were ready for lunch. We headed to NOMAD Sydney, a restaurant in Surry Hills known for its local atmosphere and unique menu. The interiors had a slightly industrial look, but it was warm and welcoming. We started with the Moroccan Beef Tartare and the Nomad Jersey Milk Halloumi, both of which were packed with flavor. For our main courses, we shared the Lamb Shoulder and the Scampi dish, both cooked to perfection. The wine list was extensive, featuring a variety of Australian and international wines. It was a truly memorable dining experience.

With our bellies full, we decided to explore North Head Sanctuary. This historic site offers stunning views of the harbor and the Pacific Ocean. As we walked along the Sanctuary Loop, we discovered military fortifications from World War II and learned about the area's history as a quarantine station. Devon was particularly intrigued by the gun emplacements. We also kept an eye out for native wildlife, such as birds and bandicoots, but unfortunately, we didn't spot any.

Before dinner, Priya and I decided to check out The Lobo, a rum bar in the city center. Inspired by Julio Lobo, the last Cuban sugar baron, this stylish bar is tucked away in a basement on Clarence Street. As soon as I stepped inside, I felt like I was transported back to the Caribbean. The decor was reminiscent of a Cuban colonial period, with comfy couches, inviting booths, and a bar stocked with over 250 rums. The bartender was friendly and knowledgeable, and he recommended a few of their signature cocktails. I opted for the Old Grogram, a mix of Lobo's spiced rum, fresh lemon, sugar, and stout vermouth. It was the perfect way to unwind after a long day of exploring.

For dinner, we indulged in the regional Chinese cuisine of Spice Temple. Located in the CBD, the subterranean diner has a moody, warm atmosphere. We started with the signature dish, the steamed eggplant with three flavors. We also ordered the spice fried chicken wings, which were incredibly flavorful and had just the right amount of heat. For our main courses, we tried the Hunan style pork belly with fresh and dried chillies. The chili burn deepened with every bite, but it was so worth it! To finish off the evening, we had some chocolate truffles that were provided after we asked for the bill.

As I reflect on today's adventures, I'm struck by the incredible diversity of experiences that Sydney has to offer. From the sun-kissed beaches of Manly to the historical depths of North Head Sanctuary and the culinary heights of NOMAD and Spice Temple, it was a day that truly stimulated all the senses. And The Lobo? It was a little taste of home, a reminder of the Caribbean vibes I hold so dear.
Tomorrow, we're planning to delve into the history of The Rocks Discovery Museum, explore the underwater world with Sydney Dive Safari, and take in the panoramic views from the Sydney Tower Eye. It's hard to believe our trip is drawing to a close, but I'm determined to make the most of every moment.
I'm especially looking forward to Cafe Sydney for breakfast. I've heard they have incredible views and even better food. Devon is excited about the dive safari and hopefully seeing some cool marine life, while Priya wants to check out The Galeries for some shopping. And of course, we have dinner at Long Chim Sydney to look forward to. It's going to be another jam-packed day, but I wouldn't have it any other way. After all, that is what family trips are all about, isn't it?
For now, I'm off to bed, dreaming of rum cocktails and sandy beaches. Until tomorrow!
