A Day of Sun, Sea, and Safari

Today was all about embracing the unique spirit of Treasure Beach, a day filled with unexpected adventures and authentic Jamaican experiences. We ventured out to the famous Floyd's Pelican Bar, a quirky driftwood structure in the middle of the sea, and then delved into the natural wonders of the Black River Safari. It was a day that truly captured the essence of this laid-back paradise.

Our day began with a hearty Jamaican breakfast at Nice and Easy. Priya and I shared a plate of ackee and saltfish with fried dumplings, while Devon opted for a stack of fluffy pancakes. Fuelling up for the day’s escapades was essential, and Nice and Easy certainly lived up to its name, providing a relaxed and delicious start to our Sunday.

With our bellies full, we set off for our first adventure: Floyd's Pelican Bar. The anticipation had been building ever since we arrived in Treasure Beach, and I was eager to see this legendary spot with my own eyes. The journey to the bar was an adventure in itself. We hopped on a small boat from the shore, and as we cruised through the clear turquoise waters, Devon was thrilled, pointing out the various seabirds soaring overhead. The ride was smooth, and the sea breeze was incredibly refreshing.

As we approached Floyd's Pelican Bar, it looked like something straight out of a movie – a rustic wooden structure perched precariously on stilts in the middle of the ocean. The bar is constructed entirely of driftwood, and its walls are adorned with carvings and mementos left by visitors from all over the world. It felt like stepping into a time capsule of travel memories.

The Pelican Bar is more than just a place; it's an experience, a testament to the ingenuity and laid-back spirit of Jamaica.

We spent a good few hours at the Pelican Bar, soaking in the unique atmosphere. Devon enjoyed swimming in the shallow waters surrounding the bar, while Priya and I relaxed with a couple of Red Stripes, chatting with fellow travellers and locals alike. The vibe was incredibly chill, and it was easy to lose track of time as we swayed to the rhythm of the waves and the reggae tunes playing on the sound system. I even carved our family's initials into one of the driftwood planks, adding our own little mark to this iconic landmark.

Lunch at Pan A Knock Restaurant was a delightful culinary experience. This restaurant is known for its authentic Jamaican cuisine and its use of fresh, locally-sourced ingredients. Priya and I indulged in some spicy jerk chicken, while Devon enjoyed a milder grilled fish dish. The flavours were incredible, and the portions were generous, leaving us all feeling satisfied and content.

Next on our agenda was the J. Charles Swaby's Black River Safari. Eager to experience more of Jamaica's natural beauty, we drove to Black River, where we boarded a pontoon boat for a guided tour of the river. As we cruised along the tranquil waters, our guide, a knowledgeable local named Captain Dennis, shared fascinating insights about the river's ecosystem and its diverse wildlife.

The highlight of the safari was undoubtedly spotting the endangered American crocodiles. Devon was wide-eyed with excitement as we saw several of these magnificent creatures basking in the sun on the riverbanks. Captain Dennis expertly navigated the boat, bringing us close enough for a good look while maintaining a safe distance. We also saw a variety of birds, including herons and egrets, adding to the rich tapestry of wildlife along the river.

Captain Dennis was very passionate about the conservation efforts in the area, explaining how the Black River is a crucial habitat for these creatures and other species, and how tourism helps support these initiatives. It was enlightening to learn about the importance of preserving this unique ecosystem.

As the sun began to dip towards the horizon, we made our way back to Treasure Beach, our hearts full of unforgettable memories. But the day wasn't over yet! We decided to check out Pardy's Rooftop Bar and Kitchen for a pre-dinner drink.

Pardy's offered a stunning panoramic view of Treasure Beach, with the sky ablaze in hues of orange and pink as the sun set over the Caribbean Sea. We sipped on tropical cocktails, Devon enjoyed a refreshing juice, and we savoured the tranquil atmosphere before heading for dinner.

For our final meal of the day, we chose Kim's Restaurant, a local favourite known for its authentic Jamaican dishes and warm hospitality. The restaurant had a charming, laid-back vibe, and we immediately felt at home as we were greeted by the friendly staff. We feasted on a delicious meal of fresh seafood and traditional Jamaican sides, savouring the last moments of our incredible day.

Looking back on today, I am filled with gratitude for the unique experiences Treasure Beach has offered us. From the quirky charm of Floyd's Pelican Bar to the natural wonders of the Black River Safari, every moment was a testament to the beauty and spirit of Jamaica. It's days like these that remind me why I love to travel and explore new cultures – the unexpected adventures, the warm encounters, and the lasting memories.

Tomorrow, we’re planning to explore the Magic Tree and venture into Cockpit Country, so stay tuned for more tales from our Jamaican adventure! I’m particularly looking forward to Cockpit Country, as I’ve heard it’s a truly unique and unspoiled part of the island. I'm sure Devon will enjoy climbing the Magic Tree.

As I sit here, reflecting on our incredible day, I can't help but feel a sense of contentment and gratitude. Treasure Beach has truly captured our hearts, and I am excited to see what adventures tomorrow will bring. Good night from Treasure Beach!

I should remember to buy some insect repellent before we head out tomorrow. I keep forgetting! Also, I’m hoping to get some good photos of the landscape tomorrow. I might need to buy a new lens if I can find a shop.

I'm also conscious that the Calabash International Literary Festival is coming up soon, from May 23-25. It sounds like a fantastic event, and I'm tempted to extend our stay to experience it. Perhaps Priya and Devon would be interested too. It would be a great opportunity to immerse ourselves further in Jamaican culture and literature.
