A Day of Discovery in Treasure Beach

Today marked the fifth day of our family adventure in Treasure Beach, and it was nothing short of spectacular. We ventured beyond the tranquil shores, diving deep into Jamaica's natural beauty and vibrant local culture. It was a day filled with exploration, delicious food, and unforgettable moments, reminding me why I love sharing these experiences with Priya and Devon.

Our morning began with a hearty Jamaican breakfast at Wild Onion. I opted for the ackee and saltfish, a classic dish that always reminds me of home, while Priya enjoyed the callaloo, and Devon, ever the adventurous eater, tried a bit of both. The atmosphere was relaxed, with the gentle morning breeze adding to the charm. It's amazing how a simple breakfast can set the tone for an entire day, and Wild Onion certainly started us off on the right foot. It reminded me of the simple joys of life back in Princes Town, where good food and good company were always at the heart of everything.

With our bellies full, we set off to explore the legendary Cockpit Country. The drive itself was an adventure, the roads winding through lush landscapes that seemed to transport us to another world. As we approached Cockpit Country, the scenery transformed into a dramatic landscape of rolling hills and dense vegetation. This area is known for its unique karst topography, a result of limestone erosion that creates a series of cone-shaped hills and sinkholes. It’s a truly remarkable sight, and I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe at the power of nature. The air was thick with humidity, a stark contrast to the dry heat of Treasure Beach, and the sounds of the forest filled our ears – the chirping of unseen birds, the rustling of leaves, and the occasional call of a wild animal.

“The earth has music for those who listen.”

Cockpit Country isn't just a geological wonder; it's also a place of immense historical and cultural significance. It served as a refuge for the Maroons, escaped slaves who fought for their freedom against the British in the 18th century. The rugged terrain provided them with a natural fortress, and their knowledge of the land allowed them to resist colonial forces for many years. As we hiked through the trails, I imagined what life must have been like for those brave men and women, their determination echoing through the hills. It was a humbling experience, reminding me of the struggles and resilience of my own ancestors.

After a few hours of exploring Cockpit Country, we made our way back to Treasure Beach, our minds buzzing with the sights and sounds of the forest. It was time for lunch, and we decided to try FlavazFuzion, a local restaurant known for its family-friendly atmosphere and authentic Jamaican flavors. Priya and Devon were particularly excited to try their seafood dishes, and I was eager to sample their jerk chicken. The restaurant was bustling with activity, families laughing and chatting as they enjoyed their meals. We found a table with a view of the coastline and ordered a feast – grilled lobster, curried shrimp, and, of course, jerk chicken. The food was incredible, each dish bursting with flavor and spice. Devon especially loved the lobster, declaring it the best he’d ever had. It was moments like these, sharing good food and laughter with my family, that made these trips so special.

In the afternoon, we decided to visit the Magic Tree Treasure Beach, a local landmark that I had read about online. It’s essentially a large tree that has become a gathering spot for locals and tourists alike. The tree itself wasn't particularly special, but the atmosphere around it was magical. People were relaxing in the shade, chatting, and enjoying the stunning views of the Caribbean Sea. Devon was immediately drawn to a group of local kids playing cricket, and he quickly joined in, his infectious enthusiasm winning them over. Priya and I sat on a nearby bench, watching him play and soaking in the laid-back vibe of Treasure Beach. It was a perfect example of the simple pleasures that this place offered – good company, beautiful scenery, and a sense of community.

Before dinner, we stopped by Tropical Treasures Gift Shop to pick up a few souvenirs. I wanted to find something special to remember our trip by, and Priya was on the hunt for some local crafts to decorate our home in Toronto. The shop was a treasure trove of Jamaican art, jewelry, and clothing, each item telling a story of the island's rich culture. We spent a good hour browsing through the displays, chatting with the friendly staff and learning about the different artisans who created the pieces. In the end, I settled on a hand-carved wooden sculpture of a hummingbird, and Priya found a beautiful batik wall hanging. Devon, of course, chose a Bob Marley t-shirt, a must-have for any visitor to Jamaica.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to Joseph's Hideaway Restaurant Bar and Villa for dinner. This place had been highly recommended by several locals, and I was eager to see what all the fuss was about. As we arrived, we were greeted by the warm and inviting atmosphere that everyone had raved about. The restaurant overlooked Calabash Bay, offering stunning views of the sunset. We ordered a round of cocktails – rum punch for me, a margarita for Priya, and a fruit punch for Devon – and settled in to enjoy the show. The sky was ablaze with color, the sun painting the clouds in shades of orange, pink, and purple. It was a breathtaking sight, and we all sat in silence, mesmerized by the beauty of nature.

Dinner was just as impressive as the view. Joseph's Hideaway specializes in fresh seafood, and we decided to try their grilled snapper and lobster thermidor. The fish was cooked to perfection, tender and flaky, and the lobster was rich and decadent. Devon surprised us all by ordering the curried goat, a local delicacy that I had told him about. He loved it, declaring it even better than the jerk chicken we had earlier in the day. As we ate, we chatted about our adventures, reminiscing about the highlights of the day and making plans for the rest of our trip.

“The best part of a journey is not the destination, but the company.”

Looking ahead to tomorrow, we're planning to explore more of Treasure Beach, visiting the Treasure Beach DMO and the Treasure Beach Women's Group. I'm particularly interested in learning more about the local community and the efforts being made to preserve its unique culture. We'll also be trying out Smurf's Cafe for breakfast, H for lunch, and Lion Rock for dinner, continuing our culinary adventure through Treasure Beach. And, of course, no trip to Jamaica would be complete without a visit to a local bar, so we'll be stopping by Lloyd's Bar for a nightcap.

As I sit here now, writing this blog post, I can't help but feel grateful for the experiences we've had today. Treasure Beach has a way of slowing you down, of reminding you to appreciate the simple things in life. It's a place where you can connect with nature, with culture, and with each other. And as I look forward to the rest of our trip, I know that there are many more adventures to come. I am so happy I get to experience this with my family, creating memories that will last a lifetime. Good night from Treasure Beach, until tomorrow!
