A Final Day in Paradise

As the sun began its ascent, painting the sky with hues of orange and pink, I knew our time in Treasure Beach was drawing to a close. The past week had been a delightful blend of relaxation, exploration, and immersion in the local culture. Today, our final day, promised a few more adventures before we bid farewell to this tranquil haven.

We started our day with breakfast at Mellow Yellow. Priya and Devon were particularly excited about this, as we had heard so much about their delicious offerings. The vibrant decor and friendly atmosphere lived up to all expectations. I opted for a classic Jamaican breakfast of ackee and saltfish, while Priya enjoyed some fresh fruit and Devon devoured a stack of pancakes. Carmen, the owner, who is from Italy, makes the food taste just like it. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee filled the air, mingling with the sweet scent of tropical flowers. It was the perfect way to start our last day in Treasure Beach.

After breakfast, we decided to spend the morning at Bluefields Beach. The drive there was scenic, offering glimpses of the lush Jamaican countryside. Bluefields Beach is known for its tranquil waters and laid-back vibe, making it an ideal spot for families. Devon was thrilled to splash around in the sea, while Priya and I relaxed on the shore, soaking up the sun. The beach wasn't too crowded, mostly locals, which gave us a sense of being away from the typical tourist spots.

Sometimes, the most profound travel experiences are found in the simplest moments, like a quiet morning spent on a serene beach.

As the morning progressed, we packed up and headed back towards Treasure Beach, eager for our Black River Safari tour. This was an excursion I had been particularly looking forward to, as I'd heard so much about the unique ecosystem and wildlife of the area. The drive to Black River was approximately two hours, but the scenery kept us captivated.

Upon arriving, we boarded a pontoon boat and set off on our adventure. Our guide was incredibly knowledgeable, pointing out various species of birds and plants along the way. Devon was especially excited when we spotted our first crocodile, lurking in the murky waters. The Black River is home to over 100 species of birds and the iconic American Crocodile. I managed to capture some great shots with my camera, adding to my collection of Jamaican memories. The experience was both educational and thrilling, offering a glimpse into a different side of Jamaica.

For lunch, we stopped at Frenchmen, a restaurant known for its authentic Jamaican cuisine. Priya and I shared a plate of jerk chicken, while Devon enjoyed some fried fish. The flavors were bold and spicy, a true taste of the island. We sat outside, enjoying the lively atmosphere and the warm Caribbean breeze.

After lunch, we decided to do some last-minute souvenir shopping at Callaloo Butik. This charming boutique, located in Frenchman's District, offered a variety of locally made clothing, jewelry, and crafts. Priya found a beautiful hand-painted dress, while Devon picked out a wooden carving of a crocodile. I purchased a ‘Life is too Short not to be Jamaican’ T-shirt. It was the perfect way to support local artisans and take home a piece of Treasure Beach with us.

As the day wound down, we made our way to 77 West Boutique Hotel & Restaurant for our farewell dinner. This boutique hotel is located on the cliffs of Treasure Beach. The restaurant is known for its elegant ambiance and delicious cuisine. We sat on the terrace, overlooking the Caribbean Sea, as the sun began to set. The sky was ablaze with color, a breathtaking finale to our Jamaican adventure. I savored some coconut shrimp while Priya enjoyed lobster, and Devon had a pasta dish. The food was exquisite, and the service impeccable. We reminisced about our favorite moments from the trip, laughing and sharing stories.

After dinner, we took a final stroll along the beach, the stars twinkling above us. The sound of the waves was soothing, a gentle reminder of the peace and tranquility we had found in Treasure Beach. Devon held our hands tightly, not wanting the trip to end.

As I sit here now, writing this blog post, I am filled with a sense of gratitude for the experiences we shared as a family in Treasure Beach. From the serene beaches to the vibrant culture and delicious cuisine, this trip has been a true escape from the hustle and bustle of our daily lives in Toronto.

Treasure Beach is made up of five Jamaican coves and their associated settlements: Ft Charles, Billy's Bay, Frenchman's Bay, Calabash Bay and Great (Pedro) Bay. It is known as the home of Community Tourism and is devoid of any all-inclusive establishments. Density restrictions don't allow for large hotels and the beaches are all public.

Although our Jamaican adventure has come to an end, the memories we created will last a lifetime. Treasure Beach, with its tranquil shores and welcoming community, will always hold a special place in our hearts. I am already looking forward to our next family adventure, wherever it may take us.

Tomorrow, we start our journey back to Toronto. It’s always a mix of emotions, leaving a beautiful place behind while also looking forward to returning to our home and familiar routines. I’m sure Devon will be excited to see his friends and get back to his cricket games. Priya is likely looking forward to getting back to her work at the hospital, helping people, which she finds so fulfilling.

For me, I’m eager to get back to my coding, but also to start planning our next travel adventure. Until then, I’ll cherish the memories of Treasure Beach and the time we spent together as a family.
