A Family Escape to the Tranquil Shores of Treasure Beach, Jamaica
Day 6: Embracing Community and Flavors in Treasure Beach
Discover Treasure Beach's heart with local groups, savor Jamaican cuisine, and unwind at vibrant bars. A day of community and culture.
A Day of Connection and Taste
Today was a day of diving deep into the heart of Treasure Beach, connecting with the community, and savoring the local flavors. It's amazing how quickly this place has started to feel like home. Priya, Devon, and I set out with a plan to experience Treasure Beach beyond its beautiful coastline, and it turned out to be a day filled with warmth and genuine connections.
Our morning started with a hearty Jamaican breakfast at Smurf's Cafe. Miss Dawn, the owner, greeted us with a smile as bright as the Jamaican sun. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee and ackee and saltfish filled the air. Devon, surprisingly, was adventurous and tried a bit of everything, even the callaloo. Priya and I enjoyed our usuals – she with the omelette, and me with the classic ackee and saltfish. It’s fascinating how a simple breakfast can tell you so much about a place. The vibrant colors, the mix of locals and tourists, and the lively chatter made it a perfect start to our day.

Community is at the heart of Treasure Beach, and today, we experienced its warmth firsthand.
After breakfast, we decided to visit the Treasure Beach DMO (Destination Management Organization). I wanted to learn more about their efforts to promote community tourism and sustainable development in the area. The people there were incredibly passionate about showcasing Treasure Beach's unique charm while preserving its natural beauty. They shared stories of local initiatives, from supporting local farmers to organizing community events. It was inspiring to see how much they care about their home and how dedicated they are to making tourism a force for good.

Next on our list was the Treasure Beach Women's Group. I had read about their work empowering women in the community through craft-making and entrepreneurial ventures. When we arrived, we were greeted by a group of women showcasing their beautiful handmade crafts – jewelry, woven goods, and vibrant textiles. Priya was particularly drawn to a hand-painted silk scarf, and Devon found a small wooden carving of a turtle that he absolutely loved. We learned about their various programs, including education, health, and literacy initiatives. It was truly uplifting to witness their dedication to uplifting the community and preserving their cultural heritage. I even picked up a few tips on how to better support local artisans back in Toronto; perhaps a collaboration is in order!

For lunch, we headed to H Restaurant, a local spot known for its authentic Jamaican cuisine. We indulged in jerk chicken and grilled fish, savoring the spicy and flavorful dishes. The laid-back atmosphere and friendly service made it a memorable experience. Devon enjoyed his first taste of jerk chicken, though he needed a few extra sips of his pineapple juice to cool down the spice!

As the sun began to set, we made our way to Lion Rock for dinner. This grill is perched right on the coastline, offering breathtaking views of the Caribbean Sea. The menu featured an array of grilled specialties, and we opted for fresh seafood. The sound of the waves, the cool sea breeze, and the delicious food created a magical ambiance. It was the perfect way to unwind after a day of exploring. The jerk chicken is a must try. The staff are very welcoming and friendly.

To cap off the evening, we ventured to Lloyd's Bar. This lively spot is a Treasure Beach institution, known for its extensive selection of cocktails and its vibrant atmosphere. We sipped on rum punches, listened to reggae music, and chatted with locals and fellow travelers. It was a great way to experience the social side of Treasure Beach and soak in the Caribbean vibes. The bar is located on the main road making it easy to find.

As I reflect on today, I'm struck by the genuine warmth and community spirit that permeates Treasure Beach. It’s more than just a beautiful destination; it’s a place where people care about each other and are passionate about preserving their way of life. I am so glad that we chose to spend our time here. I feel like I am part of the community already.
Tomorrow marks our last day in Treasure Beach, and we plan to make the most of it. We're heading to Bluefields Beach for some relaxation and then embarking on a Black River Safari Tour. I am hoping to spot some crocodiles! I am also hoping to pick up some last minute souvenirs at Callaloo Butik.
I am looking forward to sharing those experiences with you all. Until then, nuff love from Treasure Beach!
