A Solo Adventure Through Florence's Artistic Heritage
Day 2: A Day of Art and Awe: Discovering Florence's Masterpieces
Immerse yourself in Florence's art scene, from Michelangelo's David to the Duomo's heights, followed by Tuscan delights and hidden bars.
Florentine Heights & Artistic Delights
Today was an immersion into the artistic soul of Florence, a day of standing in awe of human creativity and historical grandeur. It's days like these that remind me why I traded the familiar comforts of Westport for the adventure of expat life in Berlin. While Hans and Saoirse would have loved to see this, sometimes a solo journey allows for a deeper connection with a place.
My day began with a delightful breakfast at Le Cappelle Medicee Ristorante. The reviews I'd read raved about their pastries, and they did not disappoint! Fuelled up, I set off to face the crowds at the Galleria dell’Accademia di Firenze. I was eager to see Michelangelo's David in person. Let me tell you, photos simply don't do it justice. The sheer size and the incredible detail of the sculpture are breathtaking. It's a testament to human skill and artistry, a piece that resonates across centuries.

As an ESL teacher, I often find myself drawing parallels between art and language. Both are forms of expression, shaped by culture and history. Standing before David, I felt a similar sense of awe to when I see my students finally grasp a complex grammar concept or articulate their thoughts in a new language. It's a moment of connection, of understanding, of shared humanity.
Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.
Navigating the crowds at the Accademia was a bit of a challenge, but I managed to snag a few moments of quiet contemplation before moving on. The gallery is currently hosting an exhibition titled 'L'eterno contemporaneo. Michelangelo 1475 – 2025', which explores Michelangelo's lasting influence. It added another layer of appreciation to the experience. I even overheard a tour guide mentioning an upcoming event on May 4th, 'Domenica al museo', offering free public access – a fantastic opportunity for budget-conscious travelers!
Next on my itinerary was the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, the Duomo. Its exterior, with its pink, green, and white marble panels, is striking. I decided to climb Giotto's Bell Tower for a panoramic view of Florence. The 414 steps were a bit of a workout, especially with the sun beating down, but the view from the top was worth every drop of sweat. I could see the entire city sprawling beneath me, a tapestry of terracotta rooftops and winding streets. From that height, Florence felt both intimate and grand, a city teeming with history and life.

The Duomo itself is immense. I was struck by the clock above the entrance. I learned it was designed in 1443 by Paolo Uccello and still works according to the *ora italica*, marking the end of the 24th hour at sunset. It's details like these that make Florence so captivating, these small glimpses into the past that are still alive in the present.
Lunch was at Ristorante Borgo San Jacopo, a Michelin-starred restaurant with a stunning view of the Ponte Vecchio. I opted for the a la carte menu and savored every bite of the innovative Tuscan cuisine. The service was impeccable, and the ambiance was perfect for a solo diner seeking a moment of indulgence. It was definitely a splurge, but sometimes it's important to treat yourself, especially when you're traveling alone. The reviews I'd read beforehand highlighted the chef's creativity, and I was eager to experience it firsthand. I wasn't disappointed!
As the afternoon waned, I found myself drawn to the Oltrarno neighborhood, known for its artisan workshops and leather goods. I resisted the urge to splurge on a new handbag, reminding myself that I needed to save room in my suitcase for souvenirs for Hans and Saoirse. Instead, I wandered through the narrow streets, soaking up the atmosphere and admiring the craftsmanship on display.
Dinner was at Osteria dell'Enoteca, a wine and meat-focused restaurant serving modern Tuscan cuisine. I had read about their *Bistecca dell'Osteria*, a traditional Florentine steak grilled over an open flame, and knew I had to try it. It was cooked perfectly, seasoned simply with salt and rosemary, and melted in my mouth. It was easily one of the best steaks I’ve ever had. The restaurant itself had a cozy, inviting atmosphere, with exposed brick walls and a vaulted ceiling. I felt right at home.

To cap off the evening, I decided to venture into the hidden world of Rasputin, a speakeasy near Piazza Santo Spirito. Finding it was an adventure in itself, as it's deliberately unmarked and requires a bit of detective work to locate. After ringing the brass bell hidden amongst sinister crosses and icons, a peephole opened, and I was granted entry into a dimly lit, scarlet-red den reminiscent of a 1920s speakeasy. The cocktails were lethal, the atmosphere was mysterious, and the experience was unforgettable. I overheard the bartender mention that Rasputin is one of only a few speakeasies of its kind in Italy, with others in Milan and Rome.

It was a perfect end to a day filled with art, history, and culinary delights. I'm already looking forward to tomorrow, when I plan to explore the Boboli Gardens, Palazzo Pitti, and the Basilica di Santo Spirito. I might even indulge in some leather shopping – perhaps I'll find that handbag after all!
