San Lorenzo's Charms Unveiled

Today, I decided to fully immerse myself in the vibrant atmosphere of the San Lorenzo district. It was a day filled with historical discoveries, sensory experiences, and, of course, delightful culinary adventures. I set out with no particular agenda, just a desire to wander and absorb the essence of this lively part of Florence.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Gucci Osteria da Massimo Bottura. I know, it sounds extravagant, but I was curious to see what a high-fashion brand could bring to the culinary world. The restaurant was as stylish as you'd expect, with impeccable service and a creative menu. I opted for a classic Italian breakfast with a twist – a cappuccino and a pastry filled with pistachio cream. It was the perfect way to kickstart a day of exploring. It reminded me a little bit of the quirky cafes back in Berlin, but with a distinctly Florentine flair.

After breakfast, I made my way to the Basilica di San Lorenzo. This church holds a special place in Florence's history, as it was the Medici family's parish church. The exterior, with its rough stone facade, is quite unassuming, especially compared to the grandeur of the Duomo. But that's part of its charm. It feels authentic and unpretentious. Inside, the basilica is a treasure trove of Renaissance art and architecture. I was particularly captivated by Brunelleschi's Old Sacristy, a perfectly proportioned space that exudes tranquility. The way the light filters through the clear glass windows creates a serene atmosphere, inviting quiet contemplation.

To walk through Florence is to walk through layers of history, art, and life itself.

Emerging from the Basilica, I found myself in the bustling Piazza di San Lorenzo. The square was alive with activity, filled with market stalls selling leather goods, souvenirs, and clothing. I enjoyed browsing the various offerings, soaking in the lively atmosphere and haggling for a small leather coin purse – a practical souvenir to remind me of my trip. I even found a stall selling beautiful scarves, and I couldn't resist picking one up for Saoirse. She loves anything with bright colors, and I know she'll adore this one. It's moments like these that make solo travel so special – the freedom to indulge in small pleasures without having to consult anyone else.

Next on my list was the Mercato del Porcellino, another bustling market known for its bronze statue of a wild boar. Legend has it that rubbing the boar's snout brings good luck, so of course, I had to give it a try. The market itself was a mix of touristy trinkets and local crafts. It was fun to wander through the stalls, observing the vendors and the shoppers, and trying to decipher the local dialect. I didn't buy anything here, but the experience was worth it.

For lunch, I headed to All’Antico Vinaio, a renowned sandwich shop that I had read so much about. There was a queue snaking down the street, but I figured it must be worth the wait. And it was! I ordered a sandwich with *sbriciolona*, pecorino cream, artichoke cream, and spicy eggplant. The bread was perfectly crisp, and the fillings were bursting with flavor. It was definitely one of the best sandwiches I've ever had. Finding a spot to eat was a bit of a challenge, but I eventually found a bench in a nearby piazza and savored every bite.

In the late afternoon, I decided to treat myself to a cocktail at Bitter Bar. This cozy bar is known for its innovative and experimental drinks, and I was eager to see what they had to offer. The atmosphere was intimate and inviting, with dim lighting and comfortable seating. I ordered a Prosecco Lavanda, a delightful concoction that celebrates Italy's love for Prosecco, with a creative infusion of delicate lavender notes. It was the perfect way to unwind after a day of exploring.

Dinner was at Vini e Vecchi Sapori, a traditional Tuscan *osteria* recommended by several locals. This place is clearly a favorite among Florentines, as it was packed with people chatting and laughing. I ordered the *pappardelle* with duck *ragu*, a classic Tuscan dish. The pasta was perfectly cooked, and the *ragu* was rich and flavorful. It was a truly authentic and satisfying meal. The staff were incredibly welcoming, friendly and treated me as if they've known me forever, but the wine, food and atmosphere were equally as great. It reminded me of the cozy pubs back home in Westport.

As I walked back to Casa Howard Firenze - Residenza d'Epoca, I reflected on the day's adventures. San Lorenzo had truly captured my heart with its vibrant atmosphere, historical treasures, and culinary delights. It was a day of simple pleasures, of wandering and discovering, of savoring the moment. And as I prepare for my final day in Florence, I'm already feeling a tinge of sadness at the thought of leaving this enchanting city. Tomorrow, I plan to visit the Ponte Vecchio, the Basilica of Santa Croce, and the Museo Galileo. I also want to do some last-minute souvenir shopping at Mio Concept Store. But for now, I'm content to simply relax and enjoy the memories of this wonderful day.

I'm also thinking about Hans and Saoirse, of course. I know they would have loved exploring San Lorenzo with me. Perhaps we can plan a trip together sometime soon. I think Saoirse would be particularly fascinated by the Mercato del Porcellino and the legend of the lucky boar. And Hans would appreciate the historical significance of the Basilica di San Lorenzo. Yes, a family trip to Florence is definitely something to consider.

And so, another day in Florence comes to a close. I'm grateful for the experiences, the memories, and the opportunity to explore this beautiful city on my own terms. Until tomorrow, *arrivederci*!
