Cultural Immersion in the Heart of Florence
Day 6: Florence from Above: A Day of Panoramic Views and Hidden Gems
Discover Florence's breathtaking views from Piazzale Michelangelo and Fiesole, plus the hidden beauty of San Miniato.
Florence in Full View
Today was all about seeing Florence from a different perspective – literally! After days of wandering through the bustling streets and admiring the Renaissance architecture up close, I was excited to gain a broader view of this captivating city. I wanted to soak in the panoramic vistas and discover some hidden gems along the way. And, of course, sample some more of the amazing Florentine food!
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Coquinarius, a charming spot near the Duomo. The reviews I'd read online were glowing, and it certainly lived up to the hype. The atmosphere was cozy and inviting, and the food was simply divine. I opted for a classic Italian breakfast of cappuccino and a freshly baked pastry – the perfect fuel for a day of exploration. Even Saoirse would have loved the pastries there! I made a mental note to bring Hans next time we visit Florence.
With our stomachs full and our spirits high, we set off towards Piazzale Michelangelo. The walk itself was an experience, winding through the Oltrarno district with its artisan workshops and hidden squares. I could feel the city's pulse, a vibrant mix of old and new.
Finally, we reached Piazzale Michelangelo, and I was immediately struck by the breathtaking panorama. Florence stretched out before us, a sea of terracotta rooftops punctuated by the iconic Duomo and Palazzo Vecchio. The Arno River snaked its way through the city, reflecting the sunlight like a ribbon of silver. It was truly a sight to behold.
Florence seen from above is a singular experience; not just a perfect photo opportunity, but a moment of wonder.
I spent a good hour simply soaking in the view, taking photos, and trying to capture the magic of the moment. The square was bustling with tourists and locals alike, all sharing in the collective appreciation of Florence's beauty. There was even a bronze replica of Michelangelo's David, adding a touch of artistic flair to the already stunning scene.

After Piazzale Michelangelo, we decided to venture further afield to Fiesole, a charming town nestled in the hills above Florence. Getting there was an adventure in itself, a winding bus ride that offered glimpses of the Tuscan countryside. As the bus climbed higher, the views became even more spectacular, with rolling hills, olive groves, and vineyards stretching as far as the eye could see.
Fiesole turned out to be a delightful escape from the city's hustle and bustle. The town had a relaxed, almost sleepy atmosphere, with narrow streets, ancient Roman ruins, and a picturesque main square. We explored the Roman amphitheater, imagining the gladiatorial contests and theatrical performances that once took place there. We also visited the Duomo, a beautiful example of Romanesque architecture with a peaceful vibe.
One of the highlights of Fiesole was the view back towards Florence. From our vantage point on the hillside, the city looked like a miniature masterpiece, a tapestry of history and art. I felt a sense of connection to the past, imagining the generations of artists, writers, and thinkers who had been inspired by this magical place.

Before leaving Fiesole, we stopped for lunch at Cantina Barbagianni. This cozy restaurant came highly recommended, and it did not disappoint. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, and the food was simply delicious. I savored every bite of the homemade pasta, washed down with a glass of local wine. It was the perfect way to refuel after a day of exploring.

Our final stop of the day was the Basilica di San Miniato al Monte, a hidden gem perched on one of the highest points in Florence. The basilica was a bit of a climb, but the effort was well worth it. The views from the top were simply stunning, even more expansive than those from Piazzale Michelangelo. The basilica itself was a masterpiece of Romanesque architecture, with intricate mosaics, a stunning marble facade, and a peaceful, contemplative atmosphere. The mosaics on the facade were particularly striking, shimmering in the afternoon sun.

Inside, the basilica was equally impressive. The interior was dimly lit, creating a sense of reverence and awe. We admired the intricate Cosmatesque pavement, the ancient frescoes, and the Cappella del Cardinale del Portogallo, a masterpiece of Renaissance art.
I lit a candle for my family, thinking of Hans and Saoirse back in Berlin. I always feel a sense of peace and connection in places like this, a reminder of the enduring power of faith and art.
As the sun began to set, we made our way back down the hill, feeling grateful for the day's adventures. We had seen Florence from a new perspective, discovered some hidden gems, and experienced the city's vibrant culture. I felt a deep sense of satisfaction, a feeling that I had truly connected with this magical place.
For dinner, we had reservations at Ora d'Aria, a Michelin-starred restaurant known for its innovative Tuscan cuisine. The restaurant was located in the heart of Florence, just a stone's throw from the Uffizi Gallery. The ambiance was elegant and refined, with a modern decor and attentive service. It was a real treat to end the day with such a high-end experience.

The meal was a culinary journey, each dish a work of art. I savored the flavors of the handmade pasta, the perfectly cooked meat, and the decadent desserts. The wine pairings were exquisite, enhancing the flavors of each course. It was an experience that I will not soon forget.
Before heading back to the Golden Tower Hotel & Spa, I couldn't resist a quick stop at Boutique Nadine. I had read about this quirky vintage shop and was eager to check it out. The shop was a treasure trove of unique finds, from vintage clothing to handcrafted jewelry to quirky home decor items. I ended up buying a beautiful silk scarf, a perfect souvenir of my time in Florence.

As I walked back to the hotel, I reflected on the day's adventures. I had seen Florence from above, explored hidden gems, and indulged in the city's vibrant culture. I was grateful for the opportunity to experience this magical place, and I knew that I would carry the memories of this day with me always.
Tomorrow, I'm looking forward to exploring the Cappelle Medicee and the Bargello National Museum. I can't wait to see what other treasures Florence has in store for me! Perhaps I'll find another hidden gem or two, or maybe just another delicious plate of pasta. Whatever the day brings, I know it will be an adventure. I'm also planning to check out Antico Caffè del Moro for a nightcap after dinner at Ristorante Oliviero 1962. I've heard it's a great spot for cocktails and live music, the perfect way to end another day in Florence.
I really must remember to buy an adapter tomorrow. It is so frustrating that I can't properly charge all my devices! It's a lesson learned for future trips. And maybe I'll pick up a small umbrella too, just in case the weather decides to turn.
But for now, it's time to rest and recharge for another day of Florentine adventures. Goodnight from Florence!
