A Fond Farewell to Florence

As my Florentine adventure with friends draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the experiences that have woven themselves into the fabric of my memories. Today was about embracing the quieter side of Florence, discovering hidden gems, and savoring the last moments of this enchanting city. While Hans and Saoirse are dearly missed, the camaraderie with my friends has made this trip truly special.

Our final day began with a delightful breakfast at Ristorante Belcore. The reviews I'd read online were spot-on – the quality of the food was excellent, and the service was impeccable. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploration. The atmosphere was relaxed and friendly, setting a positive tone for what was to come.

First on our itinerary was the Strozzi Palace. I've always been captivated by Renaissance architecture, and this palace did not disappoint. Built by Filippo Strozzi in the late 15th century, it stands as a testament to the power and wealth of the Strozzi family, who were rivals of the Medici. The sheer scale of the building is impressive, and I couldn't help but imagine what life must have been like within those walls centuries ago. The history of the Strozzi family is fascinating; their opposition to the Medici led to periods of exile and political misfortune, yet they persisted, leaving behind this architectural marvel. Today, the palace hosts exhibitions and cultural events, contributing to Florence's vibrant arts scene. I learned that the palace even houses a museum with a model of the palazzo made in 1489 and a Lego portrait of Filippo Strozzi by Ai Weiwei!

Next, we ventured to the Synagogue and Jewish Museum of Florence. Located within the Great Synagogue, the museum offers a comprehensive overview of the Jewish community's history in Florence and its relationship with the city. The exhibits include a collection of furnishings, religious objects, textiles, and jewelry dating back to the 16th century. I found the museum to be incredibly moving, especially the room dedicated to the memory of the Holocaust. It served as a poignant reminder of the importance of preserving history and promoting tolerance. As someone who teaches English to expats in Berlin, I often encounter individuals from diverse backgrounds, and this visit reinforced my commitment to fostering understanding and empathy in my classroom.

For lunch, we headed to All’Antico Vinaio, a spot I’d heard so much about. Despite some reviews mentioning long queues, we decided to give it a try, and I'm so glad we did! The sandwiches were indeed massive and delicious. I opted for the vegan option with spicy aubergines and sun-dried tomatoes. The focaccia was perfect, and the filling was flavorful and satisfying. It was the ideal quick bite to keep us going. I remember when I first moved to Berlin, discovering those little local food gems was so exciting. It felt like becoming part of the city's hidden culture, and All’Antico Vinaio gave me that same feeling here in Florence.

Our final stop was the Basilica di Santo Spirito in the Oltrarno quarter. Designed by Filippo Brunelleschi, this church is a prime example of Renaissance architecture. The interior is striking, with its harmonious proportions and elegant columns. I was particularly impressed by the numerous artworks housed within the basilica, including the altar paintings and sculptures by renowned Florentine artists. The Basilica is governed by the Friars of the Order of Saint Augustine and is home to the wooden Crucifix by Michelangelo. It was fascinating to learn that Michelangelo found refuge in the convent of Santo Spirito in his youth and, in return for the friars' hospitality, created a wooden sculpture for the church. Stepping inside, I felt a sense of peace and tranquility wash over me. It was a perfect way to end a day of exploration.

As evening approached, we decided to unwind at the Atrium Bar at the Four Seasons. The bar offers a luxurious setting, and the cocktails were expertly crafted. It was the perfect place to reflect on our Florentine adventure and share our favorite memories. My friends and I enjoyed the atmosphere, reminiscing about our favorite moments and planning our next adventure. I sampled a gin martini and a house-made barrel-aged Negroni. The bar itself is gorgeous, with velvet sofas, art nouveau interiors, and a chandelier.

For our farewell dinner, we chose Ristorante Pietrabianca. The restaurant is located in a historic building and offers a blend of traditional and innovative cuisine. The seafood dishes were particularly outstanding, and the service was attentive. It was a memorable meal that perfectly capped off our trip. The atmosphere was cozy and intimate, and the food was phenomenal. I was impressed by the chef's attention to detail and the quality of the ingredients. As we savored our last bites, we raised a toast to Florence and the unforgettable experiences we shared.

Though I'm eager to return to Berlin and share my stories with my students, a part of me will forever remain in Florence.

Before heading back to the hotel, we took a final stroll through the city, soaking in the atmosphere and savoring the last moments of our Florentine adventure. We passed by the International Handicrafts Trade Fair at the Fortezza da Basso, which was still ongoing. The fair is a celebration of craftsmanship and creativity, and it added a vibrant touch to the city.

As I pack my bags, I’m filled with a sense of gratitude for the experiences I’ve had and the memories I’ve made. Florence, you have been a dream come true. Until we meet again!

Reflecting on this trip, I realize how much I've grown, not just as a traveler, but as a person. Immersing myself in a different culture has broadened my perspective and deepened my appreciation for the world around me. It's a reminder that travel is not just about seeing new places, but about connecting with people, learning new things, and discovering new aspects of ourselves. As I prepare to return to my life in Berlin, I carry with me the lessons and experiences of this Florentine adventure, eager to share them with my students and continue my journey of exploration and discovery.

I’m grateful for this opportunity to explore Florence, a city that has left an indelible mark on my soul. It’s a place where history, art, and culture converge to create an atmosphere that is both inspiring and enchanting.
