Discover the untamed beauty of Douro Internacional Natural Park, savor local flavors, and find unique treasures in the Douro Valley.
A Walk on the Wild Side
Today was a day dedicated to exploring the raw, untamed beauty of the Douro Valley, a stark contrast to the manicured vineyards we've been admiring. It was a journey into the Parque Natural do Douro Internacional, a place where nature reigns supreme and the landscapes whisper ancient stories. I was eager to see a different facet of this region, and it certainly didn't disappoint.

Our morning began with a hearty breakfast at Cantina de Ventozelo. The restaurant, once a canteen for the Quinta's workers, has been transformed into a chic space that celebrates local gastronomy. We enjoyed traditional Portuguese breakfast with high-quality regional products. I savored every bite, knowing we had a day of exploration ahead. Saoirse was particularly fond of the pastries, while Hans enjoyed a strong coffee to prepare for the day's adventures. It was a perfect start, setting the tone for the day ahead.

Driving towards the Parque Natural do Douro Internacional, the landscape began to shift dramatically. The rolling hills, meticulously lined with grapevines, gave way to rugged cliffs and expansive vistas. It felt like stepping into another world, a place where the wild heart of Portugal beats strong. The park itself straddles the border with Spain, creating a sense of being in a land that belongs to everyone and no one.
We spent hours simply driving through the park, stopping at various viewpoints to soak in the scenery. The views were breathtaking, with the Douro River carving its way through the landscape, creating dramatic gorges and canyons. The air was crisp and clean, carrying the scent of wildflowers and the distant sound of birdsong. It was a welcome change from the more cultivated areas of the valley, a reminder of the power and beauty of nature untouched.
Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found not in grand monuments, but in the quiet corners of the natural world.
One of the highlights was a stop at a particularly stunning viewpoint overlooking the river. We parked the car and took a short hike to the edge of the cliff, where we were rewarded with a panoramic vista that stretched as far as the eye could see. Saoirse was fascinated by the birds soaring overhead, while Hans and I simply stood in awe of the landscape. I tried to capture the scene with my camera, but no photograph could truly do justice to the sheer scale and beauty of the place.
After our exploration of the park, we drove to Manjar do Douro in Lamego for lunch. This restaurant came highly recommended, and I was eager to try some authentic Portuguese cuisine. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, with a warm, family-friendly atmosphere. We were greeted by friendly staff who made us feel right at home. I decided to try the *cabrito* (roasted kid), a regional specialty, while Hans opted for the *bacalhau* (codfish). Saoirse, ever the adventurous eater, chose a *vitela* (veal) dish. The food was absolutely delicious, bursting with flavor and cooked to perfection. It was a true taste of Portugal, a culinary experience that I won't soon forget.

During lunch, we chatted about our plans for tomorrow, which include visiting Quinta do Tedo and Quinta da Foz. Saoirse is particularly excited about Quinta do Tedo, as she's heard they have a fantastic chocolate tasting. Hans is looking forward to exploring Quinta da Foz, known for its stunning views and historic vineyards. I'm just excited to spend another day exploring this beautiful region with my family.
After lunch, we took a stroll through Lamego, a charming town with a rich history and beautiful architecture. We visited the Lamego Cathedral, a stunning example of Baroque architecture, and wandered through the town's narrow streets, soaking in the atmosphere. It was a delightful way to spend an afternoon, a perfect blend of culture and relaxation.
Before heading back to our accommodation, we stopped at Loja Tradições, a local shop known for its unique souvenirs and traditional crafts. I was on the hunt for a special memento of our trip, something that would remind me of our time in the Douro Valley. The shop was filled with all sorts of treasures, from hand-painted ceramics to locally made wines and olive oils. I finally settled on a beautiful hand-embroidered tablecloth, a perfect reminder of the region's rich artistic heritage.

As we drove back, the sun began to set, casting a golden glow over the vineyards. The landscape was bathed in a warm, ethereal light, creating a scene of unparalleled beauty. I felt a sense of contentment wash over me, a feeling of gratitude for the opportunity to experience this incredible region with my family.
For dinner, we decided to try Restaurante Vila Douro Régua, a restaurant in Peso da Régua. The restaurant has a great reputation among locals and tourists. The food was excellent, and the staff was attentive and professional. The restaurant also had a stunning view of the Douro River. It was the perfect way to end a perfect day.

Tomorrow, we plan to immerse ourselves in the world of winemaking with visits to Quinta do Tedo and Quinta da Foz. I'm particularly looking forward to learning more about the unique terroir of the Douro Valley and, of course, sampling some of the region's famous wines. We might even pop into In Douro Bar for a nightcap. Until then, *Adeus*!
Looking back on the day, I realize how fortunate I am to be able to share these experiences with my family. These are the moments that truly matter, the memories that will last a lifetime. As we continue our journey through the Douro Valley, I'm filled with a sense of anticipation, eager to discover what tomorrow will bring.
