A Day Among the Vines
Today was a day of breathtaking vistas and unforgettable flavors as we continued our journey through the Douro Valley. From panoramic viewpoints to historic wine estates, every moment was a sensory delight. It’s amazing how quickly you can fall in love with a place, and the Douro Valley has certainly captured my heart.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Tasca da Quinta in Peso da Régua. This cozy spot is known for its authentic Portuguese cuisine, and it certainly lived up to its reputation. I opted for the *pão com chouriço* (bread with chorizo), while Hans enjoyed the *sardinhas* (sardines). Saoirse, ever the adventurous eater, tried a bit of both! It was a fantastic way to start the day, fueling us up for our explorations. I must say, the owner was a very kind young man who is very proud of his Portuguese culture. He made us feel right at home. I made sure to bring cash as they don't take cards.

With our bellies full, we set off for Miradouro Casal De Loivos. The drive itself was stunning, with winding roads that offered glimpses of the terraced vineyards and the Douro River below. As we climbed higher, the views became even more spectacular. When we finally reached the *miradouro*, I was speechless. The vista stretched out before us, a tapestry of green and gold, with the river snaking its way through the valley. Saoirse was equally impressed, snapping photos with her phone and declaring it the best view ever. It was the perfect spot for a family photo, a memory we'll cherish forever.

The Douro Valley isn't just a place you see; it's a feeling you carry with you.
After soaking in the scenery, we headed to Quinta do Panascal - Fonseca Porto for a tour and tasting. This estate has a rich history, dating back to the 18th century, and is known for its high-quality Port wines. We opted for the audio tour, which allowed us to explore the vineyards and wine presses at our own pace. The tour was available in multiple languages, so we were able to learn about the winemaking process in English. Saoirse enjoyed the tour as well, and it was nice that it was kid friendly. It was fascinating to see the traditional methods still being used, and to learn about the unique terroir of the Douro Valley. Of course, the highlight was the tasting. We sampled three different Port wines: Siroco Dry White, Bin 27, and Fonseca 10 Year Old Tawny Port. Each one was distinct, with its own complex flavors and aromas. I particularly enjoyed the Tawny Port, with its notes of caramel and nuts. Hans, ever the wine enthusiast, peppered our guide with questions about the aging process and the different grape varietals. I was really happy to discover that Quinta do Panascal was one of the first properties in the Douro to open its doors to visitors.

For lunch, we had reservations at Bistro Terrace - Quinta do Tedo. This restaurant is located in the heart of the Vale do Tedo natural reserve, and it offers stunning views of the Tedo River and the vineyards. The setting was idyllic, and the food was equally impressive. The menu featured fresh, local ingredients, and the dishes were prepared with creativity and care. I ordered the grilled octopus, which was cooked to perfection, while Hans opted for the roasted cod. Saoirse chose the pasta dish, which she devoured in minutes. We also shared a bottle of Quinta do Tedo's DOC wine, which paired perfectly with our meal. The Bistro Terrace favors small producers, combining in perfect harmony fresh products and award-winning wines from Quinta do Tedo.

After lunch, we did a little shopping at Time By Wine in Pinhão. This charming store and bar offers a wide selection of local wines and delicacies. I picked up a few bottles of Port wine to take back to Berlin, as well as some local honey and almonds. The staff was incredibly knowledgeable and helpful, guiding us through the different wines and offering recommendations. It was the perfect place to find a memento of our time in the Douro Valley. The rustic decor, combined with the enticing aromas of fine wines, creates an unforgettable experience.

As evening approached, we made our way to Douro à Mesa for dinner. This restaurant is known for its traditional Portuguese cuisine and its cozy atmosphere. We started with the *caldo verde* (green soup), a classic Portuguese dish, followed by the *cozido à portuguesa* (Portuguese stew). The food was hearty and flavorful, and the portions were generous. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploring the Douro Valley. I really enjoyed the homey ambiance and spectacular decor.

Tomorrow, we plan to visit Miradouro da Foz do Tedo for more breathtaking views, and then delve into the world of olive oil at D'Origem - Museu do Azeite. I'm also hoping we can squeeze in a visit to Petiscaria Douro Bar for a relaxing evening drink.
As I sit here, reflecting on the day, I'm filled with gratitude for the opportunity to experience this beautiful region with my family. The Douro Valley is a place that stays with you long after you leave, a reminder of the beauty and simplicity of life. I'm already looking forward to tomorrow's adventures!
It's interesting to compare the Douro Valley to other places I've traveled. While Ireland will always hold a special place in my heart, the Douro Valley offers a different kind of beauty, a landscape shaped by centuries of winemaking tradition. And while Berlin is my home, it's refreshing to escape the city and immerse myself in nature. Each place has its own unique charm, and I feel lucky to have experienced them all.
The Douro Valley isn't just a destination; it's an experience. It's a place to slow down, to savor the flavors, and to connect with the land and its people. It's a reminder that the best things in life are often the simplest: a stunning view, a delicious meal, and the company of loved ones. And as I drift off to sleep tonight, I'm already dreaming of tomorrow's adventures, eager to see what new wonders the Douro Valley has in store for us.
