Day 1: A Homecoming to Remember: Westport Through My Family's Eyes
Discover Westport's beauty with family: historic sites, local flavors, and vibrant traditions create unforgettable memories.
A Day of Familiar Charms
Returning to Westport after so many years felt like stepping back into a cherished memory. Sharing this experience with Hans and Saoirse made it even more special. Today was all about immersing them in the heart of Westport, showing them the places that shaped my childhood. It was a day filled with laughter, stories, and the comforting realization that some places never truly leave you.
Our day began with a hearty Irish breakfast at The Pantry and Corkscrew Restaurant.
The aroma of freshly baked bread and sizzling bacon filled the air, instantly transporting me back to countless Sunday mornings spent with my own family.
Hans, ever the foodie, was eager to try everything, while Saoirse opted for a stack of fluffy pancakes.
I savored every bite of my black pudding, reminiscing about how my grandfather used to make it from scratch.
The restaurant was bustling with locals and tourists alike, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. It was the perfect start to our Westport adventure. I felt a pang of nostalgia, realizing how much I missed this simple, comforting ritual. According to some reviews, this place may have been called Urban Gruel earlier, but I'm glad to see it's still a beloved spot.

Fueled up and ready to explore, our first stop was Westport House.
As we walked through the grand entrance, I couldn't help but feel a sense of pride.
This magnificent Georgian country house, with its rich history and stunning architecture, is truly a gem.
I told Hans and Saoirse about the Browne family, who built the house in the 18th century, and their connection to the legendary pirate queen, Grace O'Malley.
Saoirse was particularly fascinated by the dungeons, imagining what life must have been like for the prisoners held captive there.
We wandered through the opulent staterooms, admiring the exquisite artwork and antique furniture. Hans, with his keen interest in history, peppered me with questions about the various portraits and historical events associated with the house.
The sprawling grounds were equally impressive, with manicured gardens, a serene lake, and breathtaking views of Clew Bay and Croagh Patrick.
We spent hours exploring the estate, soaking in the beauty and tranquility of the surroundings. I remember countless school trips here, always feeling a sense of awe at the grandeur of it all. It's wonderful to see that Westport House remains a cherished landmark, still privately owned and open to visitors.

Visiting a place you have known since childhood is like meeting an old friend, full of shared memories and unspoken understandings.
For lunch, we headed to JJ O'Malleys, a traditional Irish pub known for its hearty fare and lively atmosphere.
The pub was packed, but we managed to snag a cozy corner table.
Hans opted for the classic fish and chips, while Saoirse chose a juicy burger. I couldn't resist the shepherd's pie, a comforting dish that always reminds me of my grandmother's cooking.
The portions were generous, and the food was delicious. As we ate, we listened to the lively banter of the locals and the cheerful melodies of traditional Irish music.
Saoirse, who is usually glued to her phone, was captivated by the music and even started tapping her feet along to the rhythm. It was a quintessential Irish pub experience, one that I knew Hans and Saoirse would never forget. I recall many evenings spent here with friends, sharing stories and laughter over pints of Guinness. The atmosphere is always buzzing, and the staff are incredibly friendly.

After lunch, we strolled through the charming streets of Westport, taking in the sights and sounds of this vibrant town.
We passed by The Octagon, a unique eight-sided square that serves as the town's focal point. I pointed out the monument to George Clendining, a local benefactor who played a significant role in Westport's development.
Saoirse was particularly intrigued by The Clock Tower, an Art Deco landmark that stands proudly at the bottom of High Street.
I told her the local nickname for it is The Four-Faced Liar, as it supposedly often tells the wrong time.
We popped into a few local shops, browsing through the handcrafted souvenirs and traditional Irish goods.
Saoirse picked out a Claddagh ring as a memento of our trip, while Hans bought a tin whistle, hoping to learn a few Irish tunes.
It was lovely to see them embracing the local culture and finding their own little pieces of Westport to take home with them. I remember spending hours wandering these streets as a child, discovering hidden gems and soaking in the unique atmosphere.

As the day drew to a close, we treated ourselves to a delicious dinner at An Port Mór Restaurant.
This cozy establishment is known for its innovative Irish cuisine and its warm, inviting ambiance.
Frankie Mallon's style of cooking is best described as modern Irish food. From the freshest seafood from Clew Bay and Connemara to local vegetables, artisan cheeses and meat reared on lush green fields; they're all treated with the utmost respect by the kitchen team.
The menu changes every day but expect They like to play around a little with ingredients, but they take their food very seriously. Think Grilled Turbot with Sweet Cured Pork Belly or Salmon and Leek Terrine. This is a true West of Ireland restaurant on the Wild Atlantic Way inspired by superb local produce.
Hans and I opted for the tasting menu, a culinary journey through the best of Irish ingredients. Saoirse, ever the adventurous eater, surprised us by choosing the grilled salmon with roasted vegetables.
Each dish was a work of art, beautifully presented and bursting with flavor. The service was impeccable, and the atmosphere was relaxed and convivial. It was the perfect ending to a perfect day. I've heard wonderful things about this restaurant, and it certainly lived up to the hype. The food was exceptional, and the staff were incredibly attentive. I particularly enjoyed the modern twist on traditional Irish dishes.

To cap off our first day back, we ventured into Matt Molloy's, a pub renowned for its traditional Irish music sessions.
Owned by Matt Molloy himself, a member of The Chieftains, this pub is a mecca for music lovers from all over the world.
We squeezed into a corner, ordered a round of Guinness, and listened to the lively tunes played by a group of talented musicians.
The atmosphere was electric, with locals and tourists singing along and tapping their feet to the rhythm. Saoirse, who had never experienced a traditional Irish music session before, was completely mesmerized.
Even Hans, who usually prefers classical music, found himself enjoying the lively melodies and the infectious energy of the session. It was a truly unforgettable experience, one that perfectly captured the spirit of Westport. I've always loved the atmosphere here, the sense of community and the sheer joy of the music. It's a place where everyone is welcome, and the craic is always mighty.

As we walked back to The Wyatt Hotel, under a starlit sky, I felt a deep sense of contentment.
Today had been everything I had hoped for and more. I had shared my love of Westport with my family, creating memories that we would cherish for a lifetime.
Seeing Westport through their eyes had reminded me of the town's unique charm and beauty, and had reaffirmed my connection to my Irish roots.
Tomorrow, we're planning to hike Croagh Patrick and visit the Clew Bay Heritage Centre, offering even more opportunities for adventure and cultural exploration.
I can't wait to see what the rest of our week in Westport has in store for us. I am a bit concerned that I forgot to pack our sunglasses for this trip, but I hope the sun stays away for the remainder of our stay, as I forgot to pack an umbrella as well.
I think Hans and Saoirse are finally starting to understand why I always talk about Westport with such fondness. It's more than just a town to me; it's a part of who I am. And now, it's a part of them too.
It was a perfect first day, and I'm already excited for what tomorrow brings. After today’s adventures, I’m really looking forward to sharing more of my hometown with them.
