First Day, Fairytale Start

Sintra, you've completely captivated me! From the moment the train pulled into the station, I knew this solo adventure was going to be something special. The air is crisp and clean, carrying with it a hint of magic, and the town itself seems plucked from the pages of a storybook. I can already tell that my week here will be filled with wonder and discovery.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at the Sintra Bliss Hotel. I must say, it was a delightful spread. Fuelled up, I set out to explore the wonders that Sintra had to offer, eager to dive headfirst into its rich history and captivating beauty.

First on my list was the National Palace of Sintra. It's hard to miss, standing proudly in the heart of town with its distinctive conical chimneys. The palace is a fascinating blend of architectural styles, a testament to the many centuries of Portuguese history that have unfolded within its walls. I wandered through the staterooms, each one more opulent than the last, imagining the lives of the kings and queens who once called this place home. The intricate tile work was especially breathtaking, a true feast for the eyes. I learned that the palace was inhabited more or less continuously by the royal family from the early 15th century to the late 19th century. The two tall white chimneys are very similar to horns, so they are also called Horn Palace.

To travel is to take a journey into yourself.

Next, I ventured to Quinta da Regaleira, a place that truly lived up to the hype. This estate is shrouded in mystery, with hidden tunnels, elaborate wells, and symbols that hint at secret societies and ancient rituals. I spent hours exploring the gardens, feeling like I had stumbled into a real-life treasure hunt. The Initiation Well was particularly awe-inspiring. Descending into its depths, I couldn't help but feel a sense of reverence for the secrets it holds. The whole place had an air of mysticism, secrets and romanticism.

After all that exploring, my stomach started to rumble, so I headed to Romaria de Baco for lunch. This restaurant, tucked away on a quiet side street, came highly recommended, and it did not disappoint. The atmosphere was cozy and inviting, and the food was absolutely delicious. I opted for the traditional Portuguese cuisine, savoring every bite. The service was great and the staff very attentive. I enjoyed tasty garlic shrimps, mushrooms and baked cod. Most guests recommend trying good strawberry ice cream, *queijada* and chocolate cakes. The wine list is extensive, and every visitor can find something that suits their taste. It’s a small restaurant so the seats are close together. I would highly recommend making a reservation if you have a large group.

With renewed energy, I decided to immerse myself in the legends of Sintra at Sintra Mitos & Lendas. This interactive experience brought the town's myths and folklore to life in a truly engaging way. Holograms, multimedia displays, and sensory effects transported me to another realm, where I encountered mythical creatures and learned about the ancient stories that have shaped Sintra's identity. It was a fun and informative way to delve deeper into the town's rich cultural heritage. The centre utilises different sceneries, holograms, augmented reality, 3D videos, sensory elements. It is a perfect integration of fiction and reality!

Before heading back to the hotel, I took some time to wander through the shops in Sintra Centre. The winding streets are filled with quirky boutiques selling everything from traditional crafts to local delicacies. I picked up a few souvenirs for Hans and Saoirse, little reminders of this magical place. There is a strong tradition of lace making and embroidery in Portugal with several of the shops clustered around the centre specialising lace and hand-embroidered linens including tea towels, bed linen, table cloths, aprons and some very cute baby clothes too.

For dinner, I decided to try A Raposa, a restaurant known for its elegant ambiance and delicious food. It was the perfect way to end my first day in Sintra. The restaurant is decorated in a cosy, vintage style, with an original menu of Portuguese and international dishes and impeccable service. I savored every bite, reflecting on the incredible experiences I had throughout the day. I tried the impeccably cooked locally sourced fish, and succulent shredded lamb. The wine list was meticulously curated, ensuring that every meal is accompanied by the perfect wine pairing.

As I sit here now, writing this from the comfort of my hotel room, I can't help but feel a sense of gratitude for this opportunity to explore Sintra on my own. It's a place that truly nourishes the soul, and I'm already looking forward to what tomorrow will bring. Tomorrow I plan to visit the Pena Palace and the Moorish Castle and Park and Palace of Monserrate, so I must get some sleep.

Good night from Sintra!
