Day 4: Chasing Glaciers: A Day of Ice and Awe in Jökulsárlón
Experience Iceland's glacial lagoons, boat tours, and stunning landscapes. A family adventure filled with icy wonders and unforgettable memories.
Frozen Dreams: Jökulsárlón's Icy Embrace
Today was nothing short of magical. Imagine a landscape where icebergs, sculpted by time and the elements, drift serenely towards the ocean. A place where the silence is broken only by the gentle lapping of water against ice and the distant cries of seabirds. That's what we experienced today, a day etched in our memories forever.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Saatvik Restaurant (Kaffiterían Skaftafelli). Fuelled up with some traditional Icelandic fare, Liam, the kids, and I set off early towards Jökulsárlón. Even the drive there was a feast for the eyes, with the stark Icelandic landscape unfolding before us like a canvas painted in monochrome. The anticipation was palpable; I could feel the kids practically vibrating with excitement in the back of the car.

As we approached Jökulsárlón, the first glimpse of the lagoon took my breath away. It was even more spectacular than I had imagined. Massive icebergs, each a unique sculpture of blue and white, floated serenely on the water. The light, even on this overcast day, played tricks on the ice, creating an ethereal glow. I immediately grabbed my camera, eager to capture the scene, but quickly realized that no photograph could truly do justice to the sheer scale and beauty of this place.

We spent a good amount of time just wandering along the shore, mesmerized by the icebergs. Some were small and sleek, others were towering behemoths. The kids, of course, were fascinated, pointing out shapes and figures in the ice. Liam, ever the pragmatist, was more interested in the geology and the forces that shaped this landscape.
The beauty of the natural world lies in its impermanence; everything is constantly changing, evolving, and returning to its source.
Next on our agenda was the Fjallsárlón Iceberg Boat Tours. This smaller, less crowded lagoon offered a more intimate experience with the icebergs. Bundled up in warm layers, we boarded a small boat and set off into the icy waters. The guide was incredibly knowledgeable, sharing stories about the formation of the glaciers and the wildlife that calls this area home. We even got to taste ice that was over a thousand years old – a truly unique experience!

Being on the water, surrounded by these colossal icebergs, was humbling. It felt as though we were tiny specks in a vast, ancient world. I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe and respect for the power of nature. The silence, punctuated only by the gentle hum of the boat engine and the occasional crack of ice, was profound.
After the boat tour, we stopped for a quick lunch at Veitingasala Restaurant, Shop, And Gas. It wasn't fancy, but it was warm and filling, and just what we needed to recharge after our icy adventure. We stocked up on some snacks and drinks for the rest of the afternoon.

Our final stop for the day was Shopicelandic, where I picked up a few souvenirs. I found a beautiful hand-knitted wool scarf, a perfect reminder of our time in Iceland. The kids, of course, were drawn to the troll figurines and stuffed puffins. I managed to steer them towards some more practical souvenirs, like woolen socks and Icelandic chocolate.

As evening approached, we made our way to Pakkhús Restaurant in Höfn for dinner. Höfn, known as the lobster capital of Iceland, was a short drive from Jökulsárlón, and I was eager to try some of the local seafood. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, with a warm atmosphere that made us feel right at home. Liam and I both ordered the langoustine, while the kids opted for fish and chips. The food was delicious, and it was the perfect way to end a long day of exploring.

Reflecting on the day, I feel an overwhelming sense of gratitude. To witness such incredible natural beauty with my family is something I will cherish forever. Iceland continues to amaze me, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings. We're planning on exploring the Blue Ice Cave and Kverkfjöll Ice Cave, and maybe even stopping by KIDKA Wool Factory Shop. I need to remember to charge my camera batteries tonight! It's easy to lose track of time when you're surrounded by such beauty, and I definitely don't want to miss capturing any of tomorrow's memories.
I’m also so grateful that I remembered to pack all of our warm layers. I almost forgot my favorite hand-knitted hat, but Liam reminded me just as we were heading out the door in Banff. He knows me too well!
As I sit here, writing this in our cozy little guesthouse near Skaftafell, I can hear the wind howling outside. It's a reminder of the raw, untamed beauty of this place. I feel incredibly lucky to be here, experiencing this with my family. These are the moments that make life truly special. Tomorrow, more icy adventures await!
I am already looking forward to tomorrow when we will be visiting the Blue Ice Cave and Kverkfjöll Ice Cave! And maybe we will stop by KIDKA Wool Factory Shop as well.
Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the simplest of moments, like watching icebergs drift serenely on a glacial lagoon.
