A Day of Reflections and Arctic Chills

Today was a day of contrasts, a journey through Lofoten's poignant history, stunning natural beauty, and a truly unique icy experience. It's amazing how much you can pack into a single day here, and how each experience leaves you with a different perspective on this incredible place.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Restaurant Nyvågar. The spread was delightful, featuring local products that gave us a true taste of Norway. I savored some freshly baked bread with brunost, a brown cheese that's a Norwegian staple, while Liam opted for a more traditional plate of eggs and bacon. The rorbu cabins at Nyvågar looked so cozy; it was tempting to just stay there and enjoy the waterfront view all day. I made a mental note to consider staying there next time we visit Lofoten. We chatted about our plans for the day, excitement bubbling as we anticipated the adventures ahead. It's moments like these, sharing a meal and planning our day, that make traveling with friends so special. I am so glad I decided to come here with them.

Our first stop was the Lofoten War Memorial Museum in Svolvær. From the outside, it appeared rather unassuming, but inside, it held a treasure trove of artifacts and stories from World War II. I was immediately struck by the sheer volume of uniforms, weaponry, and personal items on display. It was evident that this museum houses one of Norway's most extensive collections from that period. The museum offered a balanced perspective on a very dramatic time, from 1940 to 1945. There was even a library with a large amount of literature and original prints from the Second World War. The Lofoten raid had its own exhibition room at the museum. It was fascinating and heart-wrenching to see the exhibits detailing the Lofoten Raid, a daring commando operation carried out by British and Norwegian forces in 1941. Seeing the artifacts and reading the accounts of the soldiers and civilians who lived through those times really brought the history to life.

History is a relentless storyteller, and museums are its stage.

After spending a somber but enlightening morning at the museum, we needed a change of scenery and some fresh air. We drove to Henningsvær, a picturesque fishing village often called the Venice of Lofoten because of its location on several small islands connected by bridges. The drive itself was stunning, with snow-capped mountains towering over the turquoise waters. We parked the car and walked to the Henningsvær Port Viewpoint. The view was absolutely breathtaking. The vibrant fishing boats bobbed gently in the harbor, set against a backdrop of dramatic mountains and crystal-clear waters. I could have stayed there for hours, just soaking in the beauty of the landscape. It's easy to see why this spot is a favorite among photographers. I took out my camera and snapped a few shots, trying to capture the magic of the moment. Even though photography is my profession, sometimes I just want to put the camera down and simply appreciate the view with my own eyes.

For lunch, we stopped at Nordis Restaurant in Svolvær. The restaurant had a modern and informal atmosphere, with large windows facing the square and the harbor. I decided to try the fish soup, a local classic, while Liam went for the Nordis burger. The fish soup was creamy and flavorful, filled with cod, shrimp, and vegetables. Liam enjoyed his burger, declaring it one of the best he'd had in a while. Nordis Restaurant serves local classics such as dried fish, whale steak and fish soup. But also Italian pizza, pasta, tapas, salads and burgers. The portions were generous, and the prices were reasonable. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone visiting Svolvær.

In the late afternoon, we decided to embrace the Arctic chill and visit Magic Ice Lofoten. Located on the quayside of town, close to the Lofoten War Memorial Museum, Magic Ice Bar Lofoten is a novelty bar where the temperatures are kept below zero. The bar is filled with ice sculptures and customers can drink from glasses made of ice. It was an experience unlike any other. As we entered, we were given thick coats and gloves to protect us from the sub-zero temperatures. Inside, the bar was filled with incredible ice sculptures, all illuminated with colorful lights. We sipped on cocktails served in glasses made entirely of ice. The whole place was like a frozen wonderland, a testament to human creativity and artistry. The ice sculptures were amazing and it was definitely a unique experience to have a drink in a bar made entirely of ice. We learned about Lofoten Island's fascinating history. Seven international artists have created art below zero at the Magic Ice exhibit. The sculptures and installations are colorfully lit and presented alongside sound, music, and images, telling the story of nature. After exploring the bar, we retreated to the cozy seating area, complete with warm blankets, to relax and warm up. I'm glad we decided to check it out.

For dinner, we chose Brygga Restaurant & Bar in Kabelvåg. Brygga Restaurant has a fantastic view of the sea. We offer breakfast buffet, à la carte lunch and dinner with a menu that reflects the fishing village of Å. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, with large windows offering stunning views of the harbor. The menu featured a variety of meat dishes, all made with locally sourced ingredients. Liam ordered the grilled steak, while I opted for the lamb. Both dishes were cooked to perfection and bursting with flavor. The service was excellent, and the staff was knowledgeable and attentive. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration and adventure. I highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a delicious and memorable dining experience in Lofoten.

As I sit here in our cozy cabin, reflecting on the day, I feel a deep sense of gratitude for the experiences we've had. From the somber reflections at the War Memorial Museum to the breathtaking views at Henningsvær and the icy thrills at Magic Ice, today was a reminder of the beauty and resilience of this incredible place.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore Ågvatnet Lookout and Olenilsøya kystfort. I'm excited to see what new adventures await us. We'll also be stopping by Lofoten Wool / Høystålet to pick up some souvenirs. I'm particularly interested in seeing Ågvatnet Lookout. I have heard the views are spectacular, offering a panoramic vista of the surrounding landscapes. It's supposed to be an ideal spot for photography, and I'm eager to capture the beauty of the area through my lens. I am also looking forward to visiting Olenilsøya kystfort. This coastal fort is said to offer a glimpse into the region's military history, and I'm always fascinated by historical sites.
