Exploring the Majestic Lofoten Islands: A Norwegian Adventure
Day 4: Chasing Light and History: A Day of Discovery in Lofoten
Exploring Lofoten's serene beaches and rich heritage, uncovering hidden gems and savoring local flavors with family.
Uttakleiv's Embrace and Tales of Tørrfisk
Today was a beautiful blend of Lofoten's stunning natural beauty and its captivating history. We ventured out, eager to capture the essence of this remarkable archipelago, and the day certainly didn't disappoint. From the tranquil shores of Uttakleiv to the intriguing depths of the Lofoten Tørrfiskmuseum, every moment was a new discovery.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Nordis Restaurant in Svolvær. The Scandinavian cuisine was a delightful start, and I particularly enjoyed the perfectly cooked mussels. Fuelled up and ready for adventure, we set off towards Uttakleiv beach.
The drive itself was a treat, with the landscape unfolding before us in all its glory. As we approached Uttakleiv, the anticipation grew. I’d seen countless photos of this beach, often hailed as one of the most photographed in Lofoten. But nothing could have prepared me for the real thing. The combination of the pink-blue sky, the huge rocks scattered along the shore, the large stones, and the pristine white sand was simply breathtaking. The kids were instantly captivated, running towards the water with joyous abandon. Liam, ever the practical one, reminded them to be careful – the Arctic waters are not to be trifled with, even in summer. I, of course, was in my element, camera in hand, trying to capture the ethereal glow of the midnight sun.
We spent a good few hours exploring Uttakleiv. The beach is framed by dramatic peaks, creating a stunning backdrop for photos. I found myself drawn to the rocky shoreline on the left side of the beach, which offered some truly scenic compositions. The kids, meanwhile, were busy building sandcastles and chasing the waves. It was the perfect family moment, one that I know we’ll cherish for years to come.

The beauty of Lofoten lies not just in its landscapes, but in the stories etched into its very soul.
Leaving Uttakleiv, we drove towards Å i Moskenes, our next destination: the Lofoten Tørrfiskmuseum. Tørrfisk, or stockfish, is a staple of Norwegian culture, and I was eager to learn more about its history and production. Liam, with his Irish roots, was particularly interested in the preservation techniques – something he could perhaps apply to his brewing back in Banff. The museum is housed in an old fish landing station, which added to its authentic charm. Inside, we were greeted by a fascinating display of tools and equipment used in the production of tørrfisk.
The process, as we learned, is quite intricate. The cod is caught, brought ashore, and then hung on large wooden racks to dry in the open air. The unique climate of Lofoten, with its combination of wind, sun, and salt air, is essential for the drying process. It can take several months for the fish to dry completely, after which it is sorted, graded, and prepared for export. The museum also highlighted the importance of tørrfisk as Norway's oldest export commodity, a protected brand in the EU. It was fascinating to see how this traditional industry has shaped the culture and economy of Lofoten.

After immersing ourselves in the world of tørrfisk, it was time for lunch. We headed to Aleksandra's Table in Leknes, a charming restaurant known for its authentic Norwegian cuisine. The cozy atmosphere was immediately inviting, and the staff were incredibly welcoming. I opted for the Arctic cod, while Liam chose the burger, and the kids went for the pasta. Every dish was delicious, made with fresh, locally-sourced ingredients. It was the perfect midday meal, a true taste of Lofoten.

With our bellies full and our spirits high, we decided to indulge in a little bit of Lofoten's modern offerings. We made our way to Magic Ice Lofoten in Svolvær, a bar constructed entirely of ice. Now, I've experienced ice hotels before, but this was a first for Liam and the kids. Bundled up in warm ponchos and gloves, we stepped into a sub-zero wonderland of ice sculptures depicting scenes from Lofoten's history and culture. The kids were mesmerized by the intricate carvings, while Liam and I couldn't help but marvel at the artistry and skill involved. We even enjoyed a drink served in a glass made of ice – a truly unique experience! The friendly staff and talented sculptor from Lithuania, who apparently serves drinks, added to the bar's appeal.

For dinner, we chose Restaurant Nyvågar in Kabelvåg, drawn by its stunning coastal setting and reputation for fresh seafood. The restaurant overlooks the ocean, providing breathtaking views as we dined. The menu featured a variety of dishes showcasing the region's abundant marine life, and we savored every bite. The warm and inviting atmosphere made it a perfect end to a day filled with exploration and discovery. Liam and I enjoyed a glass of wine, reflecting on the day's adventures, while the kids recounted their favorite moments.
