Exploring the Majestic Lofoten Islands: A Norwegian Adventure
Day 8: Scaling New Heights and Savoring Coastal Views in Lofoten
Conquering Svolværgeita and soaking in Henningsvær's beauty, today was a blend of adrenaline and breathtaking scenery with my family.
A Day of Peaks and Panoramas
Today was a day of contrasts, a blend of adrenaline-pumping challenges and serene, picturesque views. It’s amazing how one day can hold so much, leaving you utterly exhausted but filled with a profound sense of accomplishment. Lofoten continues to surprise and delight, offering new perspectives around every corner.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Restaurant Nihao Lofoten in Svolvær. Liam was craving something familiar, so he opted for a classic Western breakfast, while I decided to try their Chinese-inspired breakfast options. It was a surprisingly delicious way to start the day, fueling us up for the adventures ahead.

Our main objective for the morning was Svolværgeita, also known as The Goat. This iconic rock formation has always captivated me, ever since I first saw it as a child growing up in Kongsvinger. The idea of climbing to the top and witnessing the panoramic views was exhilarating and terrifying at the same time.

The hike to the base of Svolværgeita was challenging. The trail was steep and slippery in sections, requiring us to scramble over rocks and use chains to pull ourselves up. I was grateful for my hiking boots and Liam’s steady hand, helping me navigate the trickier parts. As we ascended, the views of Svolvær became increasingly stunning, motivating us to keep going.
Reaching the base of the mountain, I felt a surge of adrenaline. Svolværgeita loomed above us, its two horns piercing the sky. I watched as experienced climbers began their ascent, their figures small against the massive rock face. While Liam and I are experienced hikers, we are not quite skilled enough to climb Svolværgeita. Perhaps we can try it another year, with a guide.
Even though we didn't scale The Goat, we were able to hike around Fløyfjellet, the mountain Svolværgeita is part of, and the views were incredible. I took out my camera, snapping photos of the landscape, trying to capture the immensity of the mountains and the vastness of the sea. It’s moments like these that remind me why I became a wildlife photographer – the sheer, untamed beauty of nature is endlessly inspiring.
The best view comes after the hardest climb.
After our invigorating hike, we drove to Henningsvær, a charming fishing village known for its picturesque harbor and vibrant art scene. The drive itself was a treat, with winding roads that offered glimpses of turquoise waters and dramatic peaks.
Our first stop in Henningsvær was the Henningsvær Port Viewpoint. From here, the view was simply breathtaking. The harbor was filled with colorful fishing boats, and the surrounding mountains created a stunning backdrop. I could have spent hours just soaking in the scenery.

We strolled through the village, admiring the traditional wooden houses and popping into local galleries. Henningsvær has a unique artistic vibe, and it was fascinating to see how the local artists drew inspiration from the surrounding landscape. I even picked up a small watercolor painting of the harbor to remind me of our visit.
For lunch, we stopped at Gadus, a cozy restaurant located in the Reine area. The restaurant is known for blending traditional Italian food with local Lofoten products. Liam ordered the fish gratin, while I opted for the stockfish ravioli. Both dishes were incredibly flavorful, a testament to the fresh, high-quality ingredients. It was a delightful culinary experience, and I’m already dreaming of trying to recreate the stockfish ravioli back in Banff.

As evening approached, we returned to Svolvær for dinner at Bacalao, a vibrant restaurant known for its seafood dishes. The restaurant had a lively atmosphere, and we were lucky enough to snag a table with a view of the harbor. I, of course, ordered the bacalao, a traditional Norwegian dish made from dried and salted cod. Liam, feeling adventurous, tried the catch of the day. Both were delicious, perfectly showcasing the fresh flavors of Lofoten.

To cap off the evening, we decided to check out Drømmebua Pub, an Irish pub in Svolvær. It might seem odd to visit an Irish pub in Norway, but we were drawn in by the promise of live music and a lively atmosphere. Plus, Liam, being Irish, couldn’t resist the allure of authentic Irish whiskey. The pub was indeed buzzing, with locals and tourists mingling and enjoying the music. We spent a few hours chatting with fellow travelers and soaking in the ambiance. It was a fun and unexpected way to end our day.

Looking at tomorrow, we are planning to explore Olenilsøya kystfort and Sildpolltjønna Ship Wreck Lofoten Norway. I am hoping for some great photo opportunities at both locations.
As I write this, I’m sitting in our cabin, the gentle sounds of the Norwegian night lulling me into a peaceful state. Today was a whirlwind of activity, but it was also a day filled with incredible sights and experiences. Lofoten continues to enchant, and I can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings.
