Exploring the Wild Beauty of Skaftafell, Iceland
Day 7: Chasing Waterfalls and Coastal Views: A Farewell to Skaftafell
Embark on a scenic journey from Skaftafell to Reykjavik, capturing Iceland's majestic waterfalls and dramatic coastal vistas with us!
A Day of Departures and Discoveries
As our incredible week in Skaftafell drew to a close, today was all about savoring those last breathtaking Icelandic views and making our way back towards Reykjavik. It’s always bittersweet, leaving a place that has captured your heart, but the promise of new adventures keeps the spirit soaring. Today, we set out to explore more of Iceland's south coast, with Skógafoss and Almannaskarð on our list, before beginning our journey back.
Our morning started with a hearty breakfast at Veitingasala Restaurant, Shop, And Gas. It might sound like an odd choice, but these roadside stops often hold hidden gems. I opted for a traditional Icelandic pastry, while Liam went for a lamb burger – apparently, it's a local favorite. Fuelled up, we hit the road, eager to make the most of our final day in this region. The air was crisp, carrying the scent of the Icelandic landscape – a blend of moss, earth, and a hint of the nearby ocean. I made a mental note to try and capture this scent somehow; perhaps I could find a candle that replicates it back in Banff.
Our first stop was Skógafoss, one of Iceland’s most iconic waterfalls. As we approached, the sheer scale of it became apparent – a curtain of water cascading down with immense power. The sun was out, creating a beautiful rainbow at the base of the falls. I couldn’t resist the challenge of climbing the stairs to the top, to view the falls from above. The climb was invigorating, and the view from the top was simply magnificent. The panoramic vista stretched across the coastline, offering a perfect farewell to the south.

I spent a good hour snapping photos from every angle, trying to capture the essence of Skógafoss. Liam, ever the patient one, explored the base of the falls, mesmerized by the raw power of nature. We even spotted a few brave souls venturing close to the cascading water, getting drenched but clearly enjoying the thrill. It reminded me of our early days, when we would chase storms in Ireland, Liam's homeland, just for the thrill of it.
The journey matters as much as the destination, especially when that journey is filled with moments of awe and wonder.
Next on our list was Almannaskarð, a scenic mountain pass offering stunning coastal views. The drive itself was an experience, winding through rugged terrain with the ocean stretching out on one side. As we ascended, the landscape transformed, revealing panoramic vistas of the coastline and the vast Atlantic. We stopped at a viewpoint, eager to capture the scenery. The wind was strong here, whipping through our hair and adding an extra layer of wildness to the experience.

I set up my camera, trying to find the perfect composition. The light was constantly changing, creating dramatic shadows and highlights on the landscape. Liam, meanwhile, was busy exploring the area, his keen eyes searching for interesting geological formations. He has always had a knack for finding beauty in the most unexpected places, a trait I deeply admire. After soaking in the views and taking countless photos, we decided to start our drive towards Höfn, where we planned to have lunch.
We stopped at Icewear/Vík Wool in Vík for a bit of shopping. Although I am Norwegian, I love Icelandic wool and the beautiful designs. I wanted to find a warm sweater to remind me of this trip. The shop was filled with a wide array of woolen products, from traditional Icelandic sweaters to hats and scarves. I ended up buying a cozy, hand-knitted sweater with a classic Icelandic pattern, while Liam found a warm hat to protect him from the Banff winter.

Lunch was at Pakkhús Restaurant in Höfn, a place recommended by several locals. The restaurant overlooks the harbor, offering beautiful views of the fishing boats. It felt like a fitting way to appreciate the coastal beauty we were leaving behind. We decided to indulge in some local delicacies. I ordered the langoustine soup, a regional specialty, while Liam opted for the salted cod. The food was delicious, and the atmosphere was warm and inviting. We chatted about our favorite moments from the trip, reminiscing about the glaciers, the waterfalls, and the incredible wildlife we had encountered.

As the afternoon progressed, we continued our drive towards our accommodation for the night, making a stop at Cafe Vatnajökull for dinner. This cozy café is nestled at the foot of Vatnajökull, Iceland's largest glacier. We enjoyed some warm beverages along with light food and pastry in a cosy environment. The cafe also offered information about diverse local tours in the area. It was the perfect way to reflect on our journey and enjoy the peaceful surroundings. The drive back was smooth, and we arrived at our guesthouse just as the sun was beginning to set. The sky was ablaze with color, painting the landscape in hues of orange, pink, and purple. It was a magical sight, a perfect ending to an unforgettable day.

We reminisced about our adventures over the past week, feeling grateful for the opportunity to experience the raw beauty of Skaftafell. As we settle in for the night, I feel a sense of contentment. This trip has been more than just a vacation; it’s been a journey of discovery, a chance to reconnect with nature and with each other.
Tomorrow, we start our journey back to Reykjavik, with plans to explore the city before our flight back to Canada. While I am looking forward to returning home to Banff, a part of me will always remain in Iceland, captivated by its wild beauty and untamed spirit. I'm already dreaming of our next adventure, perhaps exploring the northern reaches of Norway or venturing into the Canadian Rockies. The world is vast, and there is so much to discover. But for now, I will cherish the memories of Skaftafell, a place that has truly captured my heart. Goodnight from Iceland!
Before I drift off to sleep, I make a mental note to remind Liam about our forgotten portable phone charger and the extra memory card for my camera. They would have come in handy this week!
