Solo Photography Expedition in Ilulissat, Greenland
Day 2: Embracing the Arctic Stillness: My Second Day in Ilulissat
Discover the serene beauty of Ilulissat on a quiet day of reflection and culinary delights. A solo journey into Greenland's heart.
A Day of Arctic Calm
Today was a day of settling into the rhythm of Ilulissat. After the initial excitement of arriving in this stunning Greenlandic town, I decided to take a step back and absorb the atmosphere, to feel the Arctic stillness seep into my bones. It’s a different kind of travel than I’m used to, but I’m finding a profound beauty in the quiet moments.
The day began, as it will for the rest of my stay, with breakfast at Hotel Hvide Falk. The spread was a delightful mix of familiar continental fare and local delicacies. I savored some fresh pastries while overlooking the harbor, watching the early morning boat activity – a sort of rush hour, Greenland style. It’s fascinating how life here revolves so closely around the sea. The hotel is conveniently located in the city center, with stunning views of the Icefjord.

With no specific plans for the day, I opted for a leisurely pace. I spent some time organizing my camera gear and reviewing the shots I had taken yesterday. It's essential to be prepared out here, especially with the unpredictable Arctic weather. I double-checked my equipment, charged batteries, and made sure everything was ready for tomorrow’s adventure.
For lunch, I decided to stay in and try the Hotel Hvide Falk's restaurant again. The menu is a blend of Greenlandic ingredients with French and Nordic influences. I opted for a light meal, knowing that I wanted to indulge in the Greenlandic buffet dinner later in the evening. It's a culinary experience I'm eagerly anticipating, a chance to taste the heart of Greenland.
The Arctic has a way of slowing you down, making you appreciate the simple things.
The afternoon was dedicated to exploring Ilulissat at my own pace. I wandered through the colorful streets, admiring the traditional houses and soaking in the local atmosphere. There’s a certain charm to this town, a sense of community and resilience that’s palpable. I found myself drawn to the local shops, browsing through handcrafted items made from bone, skins, and beads. I even considered purchasing a tupilak, a small figure from Greenlandic Inuit mythology, but decided to hold off for now.
I spent some time by the harbor, watching the fishing boats come and go. Fishing and hunting are deeply ingrained in Greenlandic culture, and it’s fascinating to see how these traditions continue to thrive in a modern society. Many locals still hunt part-time to supplement their diet and provide skins for clothing. It’s a way of life that’s both practical and deeply connected to the land and sea.
As the afternoon waned, I found myself reflecting on the journey so far. Traveling solo has its challenges, but it also offers a unique opportunity for self-discovery. I miss Liam, of course, but I know he’s cheering me on from back in Banff. Maybe one day I can persuade him to come with me to this magical place.
Dinner at Hotel Hvide Falk was the highlight of the day. The Greenlandic buffet was a feast for the senses, a chance to taste traditional dishes made with local ingredients. From seafood to reindeer meat, every dish told a story of the Arctic. It was a culinary journey that deepened my appreciation for Greenlandic culture.
After dinner, I stepped outside to catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights. While they weren't as vibrant as I'd hoped, the faint shimmer across the sky was still a magical sight. The long daylight hours of August mean that the Northern Lights aren't as prominent, but even a subtle display is a reminder of the Arctic's unique beauty.
Back in my hotel room, I reviewed my notes and planned for tomorrow. The weather forecast looks promising, and I’m eager to explore more of the Ilulissat Icefjord. I’m also considering a visit to the Ilulissat Icefjord Centre, a museum dedicated to the area’s natural history.
Tomorrow, I plan to fully immerse myself in the wonders of the Ilulissat Icefjord, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. I'll start with a boat tour, hoping to capture some stunning photographs of the towering icebergs. I’m also planning a hike to Sermermiut, an ancient Inuit settlement, to learn more about the region's rich cultural heritage. If the weather permits, I might even try kayaking among the icebergs – a truly unique Arctic experience.
As I drift off to sleep, I’m filled with a sense of gratitude for this incredible opportunity. Ilulissat is a place that stays with you, a reminder of the power and beauty of the natural world. And I am excited to see what tomorrow brings.
The charm of Hotel Hvide Falk, with its cozy rooms and exceptional restaurant, continues to impress. I am looking forward to another day of culinary exploration and adventure, especially the opportunity to photograph the majestic icebergs under the Arctic sun. The staff's kindness and the hotel's seamless service make this solo journey even more enjoyable.
