Cultural Immersion in the Blue Pearl: A Trip to Chefchaouen
Day 3: Chasing Waterfalls and Moroccan Magic in Akchour
Discover the natural beauty of Akchour Waterfalls, indulge in Chefchaouen's crafts, and savor traditional Moroccan cuisine with friends.
A Day of Nature's Wonders
Today was a day dedicated to exploring the natural beauty just outside Chefchaouen. Leaving the mesmerizing blue streets behind for a day, my friends and I ventured into the Rif Mountains to discover the famed Akchour Waterfalls. It was a journey filled with stunning vistas, refreshing waters, and a deeper connection to Morocco's diverse landscapes.
The morning started with a delightful breakfast at Restaurant Al Wiam. The reviews I had read online mentioned their traditional Moroccan chicken and bean soup, so I had to try it. Paired with fresh juice, it was the perfect way to fuel up for our trek. I even managed to practice a little of my Darija with the friendly staff.

After breakfast, we hopped into a taxi for the 45-minute ride to Akchour. The drive itself was scenic, winding through the mountains and offering glimpses of rural Moroccan life. As we approached Akchour, the air became noticeably fresher, carrying the scent of pine and damp earth.
The trailhead was bustling with activity, a mix of locals and tourists all eager to explore the waterfalls. We paid a small parking fee and started our hike, immediately immersed in the lush greenery of Talassemtane National Park.
The path to the waterfalls was an adventure in itself. It wound along the river, crossing over small cascades and through a forest teeming with life. The sound of rushing water was ever-present, a constant reminder of the natural wonders that awaited us. Along the way, we passed several small cafes, each offering a welcome respite with chairs and tables set right in the river. It was tempting to stop at each one, but we were determined to reach the Grande Cascade.
The hike wasn't particularly demanding, but there were some steep sections that required a bit of effort. Nadia would have loved this hike, but I know she would complain about the steep inclines. Thankfully, I had worn my trusty hiking shoes, a definite must for navigating the rocky terrain. I was also glad I remembered to bring my reusable water bottle, staying hydrated was key in the summer heat.
As we hiked, I couldn't help but notice the amount of litter along the trail. It was disheartening to see such a beautiful place marred by plastic bottles and wrappers. It reminded me of the importance of responsible tourism and the need to leave only footprints behind. I made a mental note to bring a small bag with me on future hikes to collect any trash I find.
After about two hours of hiking, we finally reached the Grande Cascade D'akchour. The sight was simply breathtaking. The waterfall cascaded down towering rock walls into a natural pool below. The water was crystal clear, and the air was filled with a fine mist that felt incredibly refreshing. Despite the crowds, there was a sense of tranquility and awe.

Nature's beauty has a profound way of reminding us of the simple joys in life, a sentiment that resonated deeply as I stood before the majestic Akchour Waterfalls.
Some of my friends braved the cold water for a swim, while I opted to simply sit on the rocks and soak in the scenery. The sun was shining, and the sound of the waterfall was mesmerizing. It was a perfect moment of peace and connection with nature.
On our way back, we stopped at one of the cafes for a refreshing orange juice. Sitting with our feet in the cool water, we shared stories and laughter, reliving the highlights of our hike. It was a simple pleasure, but one that I will cherish for a long time.
Back in Chefchaouen, we decided to immerse ourselves in the local culture with a visit to Chefchaouen Crafts. The medina was bustling with activity, and the shops were filled with colorful textiles, intricate pottery, and unique jewelry. I was on the hunt for a special souvenir to bring back home to Liam and Nadia.

I found a beautiful handwoven rug with geometric patterns inspired by Moroccan culture. The colors were vibrant, and the quality was excellent. I also picked up a few small pieces of blue pottery, a nod to Chefchaouen's famous blue-washed streets. Bargaining is definitely part of the shopping experience here, and I managed to get a good price on both items.
As the sun began to set, we made our way to The Magic Lamp House of Aladin for dinner. The restaurant is known for its stunning views of the medina and its delicious Moroccan cuisine. We sat on the rooftop terrace, overlooking the Kasbah, and watched as the sky transformed into a canvas of orange and pink.

For dinner, I ordered the chicken tagine with caramelized onions and raisins, a dish recommended by several online reviews. The flavors were rich and complex, and the chicken was incredibly tender. My friends tried the beef couscous and the traditional Moroccan soup, both of which were equally delicious.
The service at The Magic Lamp House of Aladin was excellent. Our server, Reda, was attentive and friendly, making sure we had everything we needed. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, and the decor was simply magical.
After dinner, we strolled through the medina one last time, soaking in the atmosphere of the blue city. The streets were quieter now, but still filled with a sense of wonder and enchantment. I felt grateful for the experiences of the day, the natural beauty of Akchour, the cultural richness of Chefchaouen, and the camaraderie of my friends.
Tomorrow, we plan to explore the Jebel Bouhachem Nature Reserve and Park Sidi Abdelhamid. I am also hoping to find a nice place to enjoy the sunset at sunset bar. It's hard to believe that our trip is almost halfway over. I am already dreading the thought of leaving this magical place, but I am determined to make the most of every moment.
Tonight, as I write this, I'm reflecting on how much this trip has already enriched me. Being away from Liam and Nadia is difficult, but I know that these experiences will make me a better, more well-rounded person. I can't wait to share my stories and photos with them when I return to Kingston. Perhaps we can even plan a trip to Morocco together someday.
For now, though, I'm content to simply savor the memories of today and look forward to the adventures that tomorrow will bring. I think I will also need to purchase a converter plug, so I can properly charge my phone, and a guidebook of Chefchaouen, so I can learn more about this great city.
Good night from Chefchaouen.
