A Taste of Timeless Hoi An

After the long flight from Berlin to Da Nang and the subsequent drive to Hoi An, I was eager to dive headfirst into the cultural heart of this Vietnamese gem. I’d heard so much about its history, its unique blend of architectural styles, and, of course, its incredible food scene. Today was all about immersing myself in the ancient town, and I couldn't wait to share my first impressions with you all.

My day began, as any good day should, with a hearty breakfast. I ventured out to Firefly Hoi An | Restaurant & Bar. The open and airy setting, adorned with colorful lanterns, immediately charmed me. I opted for a traditional Vietnamese breakfast, chef's noodles, a flavorful explosion that set the perfect tone for the day. Fueled and ready, I set off to explore the famed Phố cổ Hội An, the ancient town itself.

Wandering through the narrow streets, I was immediately struck by the unique architecture. Hoi An is a melting pot of cultures, with influences from Cham, Vietnamese, Chinese, Japanese, and European traders who passed through centuries ago. The well-preserved buildings, many painted in the distinctive yellow that gives Hoi An its nickname, transported me back in time. The yellow buildings are not just for show; the color absorbs less heat, keeping the buildings cooler in the tropical climate. It's a practical and beautiful choice, and as a photographer, I couldn't resist capturing the golden hues in the soft morning light.

Hoi An is more than just a city; it's a living museum, where every street corner whispers stories of the past.

My next stop was the iconic Hoi An Yellow Wall. This isn't just any wall; it's the back of the Tan Ky heritage house, a building that has stood since the 18th century, witnessing countless changes in Hoi An. The wall, with its weathered yellow paint, is a photographer's dream. The small holes and vents in unexpected places add to its character, creating a stunning backdrop. I spent a good while here, snapping photos and soaking in the atmosphere. It's a popular spot, but I managed to find a quiet moment to appreciate its beauty.

Continuing my exploration, I stumbled upon the Diep Dong Nguyen House. This ancient house, built in the late 19th century, once belonged to a wealthy Chinese merchant. Stepping inside felt like entering a time capsule. The house is filled with antiques, from ceramics to old currencies, offering a glimpse into Hoi An's past as a bustling trading port. I learned that the Diep family originally came from Canton in southern China, specializing in traditional medicine. The house served as both a family residence and a shop, selling medicine and other goods.

By lunchtime, my stomach was rumbling again. I decided to try Bun Cha Ta Hoi An, a restaurant specializing in bún chả, a Hanoian dish of grilled pork and noodles. The restaurant was lively and welcoming, and the aroma of grilled pork filled the air. I ordered the full course bún chả and wasn't disappointed. The pork was perfectly grilled, and the combination of flavors – the savory meat, the fresh herbs, and the tangy dipping sauce – was incredible. It was a true taste of Vietnam.

With renewed energy, I spent the afternoon exploring Hoi An Old Town (Shopping Street). Hoi An is a shopper's paradise, with everything from tailor shops to handicraft stores. I wandered through the Hoi An Central Market, a bustling hub of activity where locals and tourists alike come to buy and sell everything from fresh produce to silk. I picked up a few souvenirs, including a colorful lantern, a symbol of Hoi An's unique culture. I also couldn't resist visiting a tailor shop, where I ordered a custom-made shirt. I'll be picking that up tomorrow.

As the sun began to set, I made my way to Mai Fish Restaurant for dinner. This restaurant, owned by a Vietnamese-North American chef, is known for its authentic Vietnamese cuisine. The setting, beside the river, was magical, with lanterns casting a warm glow. I ordered a selection of local favorites, including fresh spring rolls, and a seafood hotpot. The flavors were incredible, and the atmosphere was perfect. It was the ideal way to end my first day in Hoi An.

Tonight, as I sit in my room at the Hoi An Historic Hotel, reflecting on the day, I'm filled with a sense of gratitude. Hoi An is a truly special place, a town that has managed to preserve its history and culture while embracing the modern world. The people are friendly, the food is delicious, and the atmosphere is enchanting. I am looking forward to tomorrow, where I plan to experience more of the local culture with a visit to the Hoi An Village Experience and the Nguyen Tuong Family Chapel. I might even try to find The Shamrock Irish Pub for a nightcap. I can already tell that this solo journey is going to be one for the books. I even managed to avoid forgetting my camera today, unlike that one time in Salta, Argentina. Good night from Hoi An!
