A Day of Discovery in Kyoto

Today was a day of deep dives into Kyoto's cultural soul. From the tranquil temples to the bustling shopping streets, and the exquisite food we savored along the way, it was an experience that reminded me why I love traveling with Lena and Mateo. It’s these shared moments of discovery that make our family trips so special.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Antonio, a cozy spot known for its Spanish cuisine. It felt a bit odd to start our day in Japan with Spanish flavors, but the food was delicious and gave us the energy we needed for a day of exploring. Mateo especially loved the churros with chocolate sauce, a sweet treat that always puts a smile on his face. Lena and I enjoyed some strong coffee, fueling up for the day ahead. It reminded me of the cafes back in Argentina, where the aroma of coffee is a way of life.

Our first stop was Eikandō Temple. Even in January, without the blazing autumn colors it is known for, the temple exuded a sense of peace and history. The architecture was stunning, and we took our time wandering through the halls and gardens. Mateo was fascinated by the Hojo Pond and the little bridges. I tried to capture the essence of the temple through my lens, focusing on the intricate details of the wooden structures and the serene expressions on the Buddha statues. The temple was not too crowded, which gave us a chance to explore without the usual throng of tourists.

Traveling is not just about seeing new places, but about experiencing new perspectives and creating lasting memories.

Next on our itinerary was the Heian Shrine. The striking vermilion color of the shrine stood out against the clear winter sky. The sheer size of the torii gate at the entrance was impressive, a testament to Kyoto's grandeur. We strolled through the expansive courtyard, admiring the Chinese-influenced architecture. The Heian Shrine, built to commemorate the 1100th anniversary of Kyoto's establishment as the capital, offered a glimpse into the city's rich past. Lena was particularly interested in the gardens, with their serene ponds and meticulously arranged stones.

For lunch, we headed to Pound Sanjo-Kiyamachi, a restaurant recommended for its steak. The restaurant was located along the Takase River, which added to the ambiance. The cozy interior and the aroma of grilled meat made our mouths water. I opted for a Kobe beef steak, wanting to experience the famous Japanese delicacy. Lena chose a more traditional Japanese dish, while Mateo, ever adventurous, tried a bit of both. The steak was cooked to perfection, melting in my mouth with each bite. It was a true culinary highlight of our trip, reminding me of the high-quality beef back home in Argentina, though prepared in a distinctly Japanese style.

After lunch, we visited the Kyoto Museum of Crafts and Design. This was an enriching experience, showcasing the incredible artistry and skill of Kyoto's craftsmen. From intricate lacquerware to delicate textiles, the museum offered a comprehensive look at the city's traditional industries. Mateo was particularly intrigued by the displays on how kimonos are made, while Lena, with her librarian's eye, appreciated the detailed explanations and historical context. I was fascinated by the history of Nintendo being rooted in the production of handmade playing cards. It was amazing to see how these traditional crafts have evolved over centuries, playing a crucial role in shaping Kyoto's cultural identity.

Our final planned activity for the day was shopping at the Kyoto Shinkyogoku Shopping Street. This bustling arcade was a sensory overload, with shops selling everything from traditional crafts to modern souvenirs. Mateo was thrilled by the colorful displays of anime merchandise, while Lena searched for unique fabrics and textiles. I enjoyed browsing the various food stalls, sampling local snacks and sweets. The Shinkyogoku Shopping Street offered a glimpse into the everyday life of Kyoto, a vibrant mix of old and new. I picked up some local tea and sweets to bring back to Berlin, a small taste of Kyoto to share with our friends.

For dinner, we chose Sakuragawa, a restaurant known for its Kaiseki meals. Located near the Takase River, the restaurant offered a serene and intimate atmosphere. The Kaiseki cuisine was a true work of art, with each dish carefully prepared and beautifully presented. The flavors were delicate and refined, showcasing the best of Kyoto's seasonal ingredients. It was a fitting end to a day of cultural immersion, a chance to reflect on all that we had seen and experienced. Lena appreciated the restaurant's attention to detail, while Mateo, though not always a fan of elaborate meals, enjoyed the variety of flavors and textures. I savored each bite, appreciating the skill and artistry of the chef.

As we walked back to our hotel, Oakwood Hotel Oike Kyoto, the city was quiet and peaceful. The cold January air nipped at our faces, but our hearts were warm with the memories of the day. I thought about the Musho Shinji archery ritual taking place today at the Kamigamo Shrine, wishing we could have witnessed it, but also content with the experiences we had. Days like these are what make travel so rewarding, the chance to discover new things, to connect with different cultures, and to create lasting memories with my family.

Tomorrow, we're planning a day trip to Nara Park, where we'll visit Todai-ji Temple and Kasuga Taisha Shrine. Mateo is especially excited about seeing the deer roaming freely in the park. It promises to be another day of adventure and discovery, and I can't wait to share it with you all. As I prepare for tomorrow, I realize that I forgot to pack my Japanese phrasebook and extra memory cards for my camera. I'll have to make sure to get those tomorrow. It's the little things that can make a big difference when you're trying to fully immerse yourself in a new culture. Good night from Kyoto!
