Solo Adventure through Kanazawa's Historical and Cultural Gems
Day 1: A Day of Serenity and Culinary Delights in Kanazawa
Discover Kanazawa's serene gardens, historical castle, and vibrant market on a solo adventure, savoring local cuisine and cultural treasures.
A Harmonious Start in Kanazawa
After a long journey from Berlin, I was eager to dive into the heart of Kanazawa. Today marked the beginning of my solo adventure, and I couldn't wait to explore the city's famed gardens and historical sites. Armed with my camera and a sense of anticipation, I set out to capture the essence of this cultural gem, ready to immerse myself in all that Kanazawa had to offer.
The day began with a visit to Kenroku-en, one of the Three Great Gardens of Japan. Stepping through the entrance, I was immediately enveloped in a world of tranquility. The meticulous landscaping, with its carefully arranged stones, ancient trees, and serene ponds, was a feast for the eyes. The garden was alive with the sounds of nature – the gentle rustling of leaves, the soft murmur of flowing water, and the distant chirping of birds. Despite the rising July heat, a cool breeze swept through the garden, making the stroll incredibly pleasant.

I wandered along the winding paths, each turn revealing a new vista. The Kasumigaike Pond, with its iconic Kotoji-lantern, was particularly captivating. The lantern's delicate form reflected perfectly on the water's surface, creating a scene of ethereal beauty. I paused here for a while, simply absorbing the peaceful atmosphere and snapping a few photos to capture the moment.
In the heart of Kanazawa, serenity and culture intertwine, offering a sensory journey that captivates the soul and nourishes the spirit.
Continuing my exploration, I discovered the garden's oldest fountain, powered entirely by natural water pressure. It was fascinating to see this ingenious feat of engineering, a testament to the ingenuity of the Edo period. The fountain's gentle spray added a refreshing touch to the air, and I couldn't resist taking a few close-up shots.
As I strolled further, I came across the Yugao-tei Tea House, a charming structure that exuded a sense of history and tradition. Though I didn't go inside, I admired its elegant architecture and imagined the countless tea ceremonies that had taken place within its walls. The surrounding greenery, with its vibrant hues of green, provided a stunning backdrop, making the tea house a perfect subject for my lens.
Leaving Kenroku-en, I made my way to Kanazawa Castle Park, located just a short walk away. The castle, once the seat of the powerful Maeda clan, is a symbol of Kanazawa's rich history. Although the main keep was lost to fire centuries ago, the reconstructed gates and turrets offered a glimpse into the castle's former grandeur.

The Ishikawa-mon Gate, with its impressive stonework and imposing structure, was particularly striking. I spent some time admiring the intricate details of the gate, marveling at the craftsmanship of the artisans who had built it. The park itself was a sprawling expanse of green, dotted with historical buildings and offering panoramic views of the city.
One of the highlights of the castle park was the Gyokusen'inmaru Garden. This meticulously restored garden, with its winding paths, serene ponds, and carefully arranged stones, was a tranquil oasis within the bustling city. I wandered through the garden, admiring the beauty of the landscape and taking in the peaceful atmosphere. The combination of historical architecture and natural beauty made Kanazawa Castle Park a truly special place.
By midday, my stomach was starting to rumble, so I decided to head to Omicho Market, known as Kanazawa's Kitchen. The market was a sensory explosion – a vibrant tapestry of sights, sounds, and smells. Stalls overflowed with fresh seafood, colorful produce, and local delicacies. The air was filled with the lively chatter of vendors and the enticing aromas of street food.

I wandered through the market, marveling at the incredible variety of goods on offer. The seafood section was particularly impressive, with glistening displays of crab, shrimp, and various types of fish. I even spotted some *nodoguro* (blackthroat seaperch), a local specialty that I was eager to try.
For lunch, I decided to try Kifune, a restaurant located in Omicho Market. Securing a reservation at Kifune is notoriously difficult, often requiring bookings months in advance. I was fortunate enough to find a spot, and I was excited to experience their renowned Kaga Kaiseki cuisine.

The restaurant itself was a haven of tranquility, a stark contrast to the bustling market outside. I was led to a private room, where I was presented with a meticulously crafted multi-course meal. Each dish was a work of art, a delicate balance of flavors and textures that delighted my palate. From the freshest sashimi to the most exquisite grilled fish, every bite was a revelation.
The chef, Seiichi Nakagawa, is known for his innovative approach to cooking, blending traditional techniques with creative methods. The meal was a testament to his skill and artistry, a truly unforgettable culinary experience. I savored every moment, appreciating the care and attention that had gone into each dish. The restaurant's intimate and cozy setting provided the perfect backdrop for this special meal. It was a culinary journey that perfectly encapsulated the essence of Kanazawa.
After such an exquisite lunch, I needed a little walk. I decided to try Plat Home - Kanazawa Kitchen for dinner. The restaurant is set in a renovated Japanese storehouse over 100 years old, offering a delightful fusion of Japanese and Western cuisine. I managed to get a seat at the counter, which gave me a perfect view of the chefs in action. I started with a fresh sashimi platter, followed by the chef's recommendation of grilled Wagyu steak. The flavors were incredible, a unique twist on traditional Japanese cuisine. It was the perfect end to a day filled with culinary discoveries.

As the day drew to a close, I reflected on my first impressions of Kanazawa. The city had captivated me with its blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. From the serene gardens to the bustling market, every corner of Kanazawa had something to offer. I was particularly impressed by the city's culinary scene, a testament to the region's rich agricultural heritage and the skill of its chefs.
Tomorrow, I plan to visit the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa, and explore the Higashi Chaya District. I'm also looking forward to trying some local sake at Oriental Brewing. I can't wait to see what other hidden gems Kanazawa has in store for me.
Despite forgetting my adapter and sunscreen, my first day in Kanazawa was a resounding success. The city had welcomed me with open arms, and I was eager to continue my exploration. As I drifted off to sleep, I dreamt of serene gardens, historical castles, and the tantalizing flavors of Kanazawa cuisine. What a start to my solo adventure!
I would highly recommend visiting the Kanazawa Castle Park in the evening, as it offers old Japanese castle remains, rich vegetation, and various kinds of stone walls. Also, during the night, the special lighting accentuates the shapes of the unique stone walls and takes you to a fantastic world.
The rainy season extends through July, and the weather tends to be hot and humid. However, even during the rainy season, it usually does not rain every day, so travel is certainly possible during July. I was very lucky today, with temperatures between 79°F to 86°F, and only partly cloudy conditions.
It seems that I arrived just in time for some of Kanazawa's summer events, where visitors can experience Japanese culture. From traditional shrine festivals to firework displays, it will be a great opportunity to experience Japan's summer traditions. I'll keep an eye out for the Ono Hiyoshi Shrine Festival Sanno Matsuri, the Hokkoku Fireworks, and the Yuwaku Bonbori Festival Lighting Ceremony.
Kanazawa, you have already stolen a piece of my heart. I'm excited for the adventures that await!
Explore Kanazawa's rich history and vibrant culture on a solo journey filled with Edo-era charm, art, and culinary delights.
