A Day of Serenity and Flavors

Today in Kanazawa was a soothing balm to the soul, a blend of spiritual contemplation and culinary exploration. I wandered through sacred spaces, reflected on Zen philosophy, and savored the tastes of this captivating city. It was a day of quiet joy, a reminder of the simple pleasures that make travel so enriching.

My day began with a visit to Oyama Shrine. The summer air was thick with humidity, but a gentle breeze rustled through the trees surrounding the shrine, offering a welcome respite. As I approached, the shrine's unique Shinmon gate immediately caught my eye. It's a fascinating blend of Japanese, Chinese, and European architectural styles, a testament to Kanazawa's open-mindedness throughout its history. The gate, originally constructed in 1875, was designed with the help of a Dutch architect and even features Dutch stained-glass windows on its third floor. Legend has it that this level was once used as a lighthouse! I learned that the shrine is dedicated to Maeda Toshiie, the first lord of the Kaga domain, and his wife, Maeda Matsu. A statue of Toshiie on horseback stands on the grounds, a reminder of his importance in Kanazawa's history. I took a moment to appreciate the strolling garden, designed by Kobori Enshu, with its pond shaped like a *biwa*, a Japanese lute. The peaceful atmosphere was perfect for quiet reflection.

Next on my itinerary was the D.T. Suzuki Museum, dedicated to the life and works of the influential Zen Buddhist philosopher, Suzuki Daisetz Teitaro. As someone always keen to understand different cultures and beliefs, this museum was very appealing. The museum itself is a work of art, designed by architect Yoshio Taniguchi. Its clean lines and open spaces reflect the principles of Zen philosophy, encouraging contemplation and introspection. Inside, I explored exhibits showcasing Suzuki's writings and photographs, learning about his role in popularizing Zen Buddhism in the West. I was particularly drawn to the Contemplative Space, a simple square room with openings on all four sides, overlooking a tranquil water garden. I sat there for a while, letting the serenity of the space wash over me, trying to quiet my mind and embrace the present moment.

For lunch, I ventured to Uchuken Syokudo, a local eatery known for its delicious set meals. The restaurant was bustling with locals, always a good sign, and I managed to snag a seat at the counter. I ordered one of their popular set meals, featuring a variety of small dishes showcasing local ingredients. The flavors were simple but satisfying, and the atmosphere was warm and inviting. It was a perfect spot to refuel after a morning of spiritual exploration.

In the evening, I decided to indulge in some *teppanyaki* at Teppanyaki makibi san-an. The aroma of sizzling meat filled the air as I walked in, and I knew I was in for a treat. I opted for a set course featuring Noto beef, a local specialty. The chef expertly grilled the beef right in front of me, searing it to perfection. Each bite was a melt-in-your-mouth experience, rich and flavorful. The meal was a true celebration of Kanazawa's culinary heritage.

After dinner, I decided to explore Kanazawa's nightlife with a visit to Kohaku Bar. The bar had a cozy and intimate atmosphere, perfect for a solo traveler like myself. I ordered a cocktail made with seasonal fruits, expertly crafted by the bartender. As I sipped my drink, I chatted with some of the locals, learning more about Kanazawa's culture and history. It was a delightful end to a day of exploration.

Before heading back to HOTEL MYSTAYS Kanazawa Katamachi, I made a spontaneous decision to try one more restaurant: Umi & Tsuchi. The name translates to Sea & Earth, which immediately caught my attention. I had read about it online and knew it was a French restaurant with unique Japanese wine pairings. I was not disappointed and was able to sample some unique dishes that blended traditional Japanese and French cooking styles. The restaurant was small and intimate, and I would highly recommend it.

As I reflect on the day, I realize how much Kanazawa has to offer. It's a city where ancient traditions meet modern sensibilities, where spiritual contemplation blends seamlessly with culinary delights. I'm already looking forward to tomorrow, when I plan to explore the Geisha House Shima and the Kanazawa City Ashigaru Museum. But for now, I'll savor the memories of this day, a day of serenity and flavors in the heart of Japan.

I’m also realizing that I forgot to pack my adapter for electronic devices and sunscreen. I will need to pick those up tomorrow at Kanazawa Hyakubangai, which is on the itinerary for tomorrow. Perhaps I can also pick up a few souvenirs for Lena and Mateo. I know they would love something from Japan. I also learned that GALNERYUS, a metal band, is playing a show here in Kanazawa. I am not a huge fan of metal, but I do like to experience local culture, so perhaps I will check it out.
