Exploring the Blue Pearl of Morocco: A Solo Journey to Chefchaouen
Day 9: Conquering Chefchaouen's Heights: A Day of Panoramic Views and Local Treasures
Hike to Jebel El-Kelaa Summit, explore local shops, and savor Moroccan cuisine in Chefchaouen. An adventure filled with breathtaking views.
Summiting Jebel El-Kelaa
Today was a day of reaching new heights, both literally and figuratively, here in Chefchaouen. I decided to tackle Jebel El-Kelaa, the mountain overlooking this blue city, and immerse myself in the local culture a bit more. It was a day filled with stunning vistas, delicious food, and a touch of retail therapy.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Hôtel restaurant La fuente. It was conveniently located and I wanted to try it out. The tagine was absolutely delicious, a perfect way to fuel up before my hike. I enjoyed the quiet morning atmosphere, watching the town slowly wake up while savoring the rich flavors of Moroccan cuisine. It's amazing how a simple meal can connect you to a place.

With a full stomach and a sense of anticipation, I set off towards Jebel El-Kelaa Summit. The hike was described as moderately difficult, and I found that to be quite accurate. The initial incline was gentle, allowing me to warm up, but soon enough, the path became steeper and a bit more challenging. I was glad I had worn my comfortable walking shoes; Sofia would have been proud of me for being so prepared! Apparently proper hiking shoes with enough grip are a must.
As I ascended, the views became increasingly breathtaking. The blue hues of Chefchaouen spread out below me, a mesmerizing contrast against the rugged mountain terrain. The air was crisp and clean, carrying the scent of aromatic herbs. I even encountered a few friendly locals along the way, always ready with a smile and a greeting. The Rif Mountains are truly stunning, and I felt so grateful to be experiencing their beauty firsthand.
The journey up the mountain is a metaphor for life itself – challenging, rewarding, and ultimately breathtaking.
The final stretch to the summit was the most demanding, with some steep and slippery sections. I had to focus and take my time, but the effort was more than worth it. Reaching the top, I was rewarded with a panoramic vista that stretched as far as the eye could see. The entire city of Chefchaouen lay beneath me, a sea of blue rooftops nestled in the valleys. I spent a good while simply soaking in the view, capturing photos, and feeling an immense sense of accomplishment.

The descent offered a different perspective, with new angles and hidden corners of the landscape revealing themselves. I made sure to take it slow and steady, mindful of the terrain. All in all, the hike took a good part of the morning, and by the time I returned to town, I was ready for a well-deserved lunch.
I decided to try Mounir Food for lunch. I had heard good things about their halal dishes, and I was in the mood for a flavorful adventure. Mounir Food is one of the favorite restaurants of the locals of Chefchaouen. The restaurant prepares dishes in the local traditional way, and the chef insists on using fresh seasonal ingredients. It was a delightful experience, and the perfect way to refuel after my hike. The lemon chicken was especially delicious!

With my energy restored, I ventured into the heart of Chefchaouen's medina, eager to explore the local shops. My destination was Blue. concept store, a place I had read about that seemed to offer unique Moroccan gifts and artisanal treasures. The store was a treasure trove of handcrafted jewelry, intricate textiles, and beautifully designed home décor. Each piece told a story, reflecting the rich artistry of Morocco.

I spent a pleasant hour browsing through the store, admiring the craftsmanship and chatting with the friendly staff. I found a beautiful hand-painted ceramic bowl that I knew would be the perfect addition to our dining room back in Bonn. It would be a reminder of my Moroccan adventure, a splash of blue in our German home.
As the afternoon waned, I decided to treat myself to a relaxing dinner at Restaurant populaire. I wanted to experience a truly local dining spot, and this place seemed to fit the bill. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, filled with the aroma of traditional Moroccan spices. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration and adventure.

The evening in Chefchaouen was peaceful and serene. The blue streets took on a different hue under the soft glow of the streetlights, creating a magical atmosphere. I strolled through the medina, soaking in the ambiance and reflecting on the day's experiences. The hike to Jebel El-Kelaa, the delicious meals, the unique shops – it all added up to a day I would cherish.
Tomorrow marks the last day of my Moroccan adventure, and I plan to make the most of it. My itinerary includes a visit to Lavadero de la ciudad, an old public laundry spot, and Place El Haouta, a local square known for its vibrant atmosphere. I also plan to unwind at Restaurant Bar Chaouen, enjoying a refreshing drink and reflecting on my time in this enchanting blue city. I'll have breakfast at Toda Creperie & Ice Cream, lunch at Restaurant Al Wiam, and a final dinner at Chez Hicham. I am sure to enjoy those spots!
Chefchaouen has captured my heart with its beauty, its culture, and its people. It's a place I know I'll return to someday, perhaps with Hans and Sofia in tow. Until then, I'll carry the memories of this solo journey with me, a reminder of the power of exploration and the joy of discovering new places.
As I prepare to leave this captivating city, I am filled with a sense of gratitude and anticipation. Morocco has been an incredible experience, and I can't wait to share more stories and photos with you all. Stay tuned for my final blog post, where I'll share my overall impressions and reflections on this unforgettable journey. Until then, farewell from the blue pearl of Morocco!
I am looking forward to sharing all my new stories with Hans and Sofia, and maybe even try cooking some Moroccan dishes for them, with a German twist, of course!
