Into the Wilds of Crete

Today felt like stepping into a different world, a world where ancient forests whispered secrets and colorful parrots serenaded us with their exotic calls. Leaving the familiar comforts of our Airbnb, we embarked on a journey to experience two of Crete's most captivating natural attractions: the serene Rouvas Forest and the vibrant AMAZONAS PARK. It was a day filled with exploration, laughter, and a deeper connection with nature.

Our morning began with a hearty breakfast at Theodosi restaurant. The warm Cretan hospitality was evident as we enjoyed a delicious meal that fueled us for our day of adventure. I savored the local delicacies, and Sofia enjoyed some fresh fruit. I must remember to try to recreate these dishes back home in Bonn, perhaps adding a German twist.

Rouvas Forest: A Walk Among Giants

After breakfast, we drove towards Rouvas Forest, eager to immerse ourselves in its legendary tranquility. The drive itself was stunning, with winding roads offering panoramic views of the Cretan landscape. As we approached the forest, the air grew cooler, carrying the scent of pine and damp earth. Hans, ever the navigator, expertly guided us through the narrow roads, while Sofia peppered us with questions about the trees and animals we might encounter.

The Rouvas Forest is a hidden gem nestled in the southern part of the Psiloritis mountain. Its isolation is the very reason for its existence, as it has been protected from human destruction. As we entered the forest, I felt an immediate sense of peace. The towering trees formed a natural cathedral, their branches interlacing to create a canopy that filtered the sunlight into dappled patterns on the forest floor. The only sounds were the rustling of leaves, the chirping of birds, and the occasional murmur of our own voices.

We chose to hike a portion of the E4 European hiking trail, which starts from Zaros Lake and meanders through the stunning Gorge of Agios Nikolaos before reaching the forest. The trail was well-marked, and we took our time, stopping frequently to admire the scenery. Sofia was particularly fascinated by the wildflowers that dotted the path, each one a tiny burst of color against the green backdrop. Hans, always the attentive husband, made sure we had plenty of water and snacks, ever mindful of our energy levels.

Nature is not a place to visit. It is home.

The hike was moderately challenging, with some steep inclines and rocky terrain. But the effort was well worth it. At one point, we reached a clearing that offered a breathtaking view of the surrounding mountains. The vastness of the landscape filled me with a sense of awe, reminding me of the simple joys in life. We paused there for a while, simply breathing in the fresh air and soaking in the beauty of our surroundings. It was a moment of pure bliss, a memory I knew we would cherish for years to come.

Lunchtime Delights at Patsas Agnos

After our invigorating hike, our stomachs began to rumble. We drove to PATSAS AGNOS - TRADITIONAL COOKING for a well-deserved lunch. This charming restaurant is known for its authentic Greek cuisine and warm hospitality. We were greeted with smiles and led to a cozy table where we could relax and enjoy our meal.

The menu was filled with tempting options, but we decided to try some of the local specialties. I ordered the moussaka, a classic Greek dish of layered eggplant, potatoes, and meat sauce topped with a creamy béchamel. Hans opted for the pastitsio, a baked pasta dish similar to lasagna. Sofia, ever the adventurous eater, chose the traditional soup. Each dish was bursting with flavor, a testament to the restaurant's commitment to using fresh, local ingredients.

As we savored our meal, we chatted about our adventures in the forest, sharing our favorite moments and laughing at our occasional missteps. The atmosphere was relaxed and convivial, and we felt like we were truly experiencing the heart of Cretan culture. It was exactly the kind of authentic experience we had hoped for when planning this trip. I thought about Teruel and wished my parents could experience this with me. I must plan a trip for them to come visit us in Bonn, and then we can all travel to Crete together.

AMAZONAS PARK: A Parrot Paradise

With our bellies full and our spirits high, we set off for our next destination: AMAZONAS PARK. This unique wildlife sanctuary is dedicated to the conservation of endangered species, particularly parrots and monkeys from South America. As we approached the park, we could already hear the distinctive squawks and calls of the exotic birds.

Sofia was ecstatic. She has always loved animals, and the prospect of seeing parrots and monkeys up close filled her with glee. As we entered the park, we were immediately greeted by a kaleidoscope of colors and sounds. Parrots of every imaginable hue perched on branches, their vibrant plumage a stark contrast to the lush green foliage. Monkeys swung playfully from trees, their mischievous eyes watching our every move.

We joined a guided tour of the sanctuary, where we learned about the park's conservation efforts and the challenges faced by these endangered species. The guide was passionate and knowledgeable, sharing fascinating facts about the animals and their rainforest environments. We discovered the importance of protecting these creatures and their habitats. Sofia listened intently, her eyes wide with wonder.

One of the highlights of our visit was the opportunity to feed the monkeys. We were given small cups of fruit and nuts, which the monkeys eagerly snatched from our hands. Sofia giggled with delight as a tiny monkey climbed onto her arm, its soft fur tickling her skin. It was an unforgettable moment, a connection with nature that transcended language and culture.

As we strolled through the park, we encountered a variety of other animals, including meerkats, lemurs, and reptiles. Each one was unique and fascinating, and we spent hours observing their behaviors and learning about their adaptations. It was an educational experience that broadened our understanding of the natural world and deepened our appreciation for its diversity.

Evening Reflections at Rudis Bar and Salis Restaurant

As the day drew to a close, we decided to unwind with a drink at Rudis Bar. This cozy establishment is known for its wide selection of Belgian and Greek beers, as well as its relaxed atmosphere. Hans, a beer aficionado, was in his element, sampling the local brews and chatting with the friendly owner. Sofia and I enjoyed some refreshing lemonade, savoring the last moments of our day of adventure.

For dinner, we chose Salis Restaurant, enticed by its reputation for innovative cuisine and stunning seaside ambiance. The restaurant was nestled by the Venetian port, offering breathtaking views of the illuminated harbor. The service was impeccable, and the staff made us feel welcome from the moment we arrived.

The menu was a delightful fusion of traditional Cretan dishes with modern twists. I started with the mussels, fresh and succulent, followed by the truffle pasta. Hans opted for the grilled octopus, which he declared was cooked to perfection. Sofia enjoyed a simple yet delicious plate of pasta with tomato sauce. The flavors were exquisite, and the presentation was artful. It was a culinary experience that perfectly capped off our day of exploration.

As we savored our meal, we reflected on the day's adventures. From the tranquil forests to the vibrant wildlife, Crete had once again captivated us with its beauty and charm. I felt grateful for the opportunity to share these experiences with my family, creating memories that would last a lifetime. As we prepared for our next adventure to Heraklion Venetian Port and Caves Matala tomorrow, I couldn't help but feel a sense of excitement for what lay ahead.
