A Day of Serene Panoramas and Culinary Delights
Today was a day of embracing the serene beauty and local flavors of Futaleufu. We ventured out to capture the essence of this Patagonian paradise, and it certainly didn't disappoint. From tranquil lagoons to breathtaking viewpoints, every moment felt like a postcard come to life. And the food? Oh, the food was a delightful journey in itself!
Our day began with the promise of stunning landscapes, and Futaleufu delivered in spades. After a hearty start, fueled by the comforting aromas of Café Huilque, Hans and I were ready to explore. The café was a cozy nook, filled with locals and the kind of warmth that only a small town can offer. It reminded me of the small cafes back in Guanare, where the day starts with strong coffee and friendly chatter.
Our first stop was Laguna de la Paz, a place that truly lives up to its name. The drive there was scenic, with the kind of views that make you want to stop every few minutes to take another photo. The fall colors were just starting to paint the landscape, adding a touch of magic to the already stunning scenery. The air was crisp and clean, carrying the scent of pine and damp earth. We took a leisurely stroll along the shore, the water reflecting the surrounding mountains like a mirror. It was so peaceful; the only sounds were the gentle lapping of the water and the occasional call of a bird. I felt a sense of calm wash over me, a feeling that’s been rare in our busy lives back in Bamberg.

I was particularly excited about visiting Laguna de la Paz because I had read it was ideal for beginners in kayaking. While we didn't have time for a full kayaking session today, we did see several people enjoying the calm waters, and it's definitely on my list for a future visit. Hans, ever the practical one, was more interested in the engineering of the old hanging bridge nearby, Pasarela las Escalas, marveling at how it connected the valley.
The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only one page.
Next on our itinerary was Mirador del Diablo. The name itself conjured images of dramatic landscapes, and I was eager to see if it lived up to the hype. The drive to the viewpoint was an adventure in itself, a winding road that climbed higher and higher, offering glimpses of the valley below. As we ascended, the trees became sparser, revealing the rugged beauty of the Patagonian terrain. When we finally reached the mirador, I was speechless. The view was simply breathtaking: a panoramic vista of the Futaleufu River snaking through the valley, framed by towering mountains. The sheer scale of it all was humbling, a reminder of the power and beauty of nature.

Hans, who usually prefers a detailed map to a scenic overlook, was equally impressed. He spent a good half-hour just taking it all in, occasionally pointing out geological features he recognized from his reading. I, on the other hand, was content to simply soak up the view, feeling a sense of gratitude for being able to experience such a place. I tried to capture the view with my camera, but some things are just too grand to fit into a photograph. You have to be there, to feel the wind on your face and the vastness of the landscape stretching out before you.
After our fill of panoramic views, it was time for lunch. We headed to Rincon de Mama, a local spot known for its traditional Chilean cuisine. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, with wooden tables and a warm, rustic decor. The aroma of hearty stews and freshly baked bread filled the air, making my stomach rumble in anticipation. We ordered cazuela, a traditional Chilean soup, and empanadas filled with meat and olives. The cazuela was rich and flavorful, a perfect comfort food for a chilly day. The empanadas were equally delicious, the pastry flaky and the filling savory and satisfying. It was the kind of meal that warms you from the inside out, a true taste of Chilean hospitality. It reminded me of my mother's cooking, simple but full of love and flavor.
In the afternoon, we decided to explore the local shops, hoping to find some souvenirs to take back home. We stumbled upon Tienda Lasen, a charming little store filled with handcrafted goods and local products. I was immediately drawn to the colorful textiles and artisanal crafts, each one telling a story of the region. I found a beautiful hand-woven scarf, the colors inspired by the Patagonian landscape. It was the perfect memento of our trip, a tangible reminder of the beauty and culture of Futaleufu. Hans, surprisingly, found a small wooden carving of a huemul, a native deer species, which he proudly declared would be his desk ornament back in Bamberg.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to SurAndes Futaleufú for dinner. This restaurant came highly recommended, and I was eager to see if it lived up to its reputation. The ambiance was elegant yet relaxed, with soft lighting and a sophisticated decor. The menu featured a mix of international and Chilean dishes, all made with fresh, local ingredients. We started with ceviche, a refreshing blend of seafood marinated in citrus juices. For our main courses, Hans ordered the lamb, while I opted for the grilled salmon. Both dishes were cooked to perfection, the flavors complex and harmonious. It was a culinary experience that delighted our senses, a fitting end to a day of exploration and discovery.

Reflecting on the day, I realized that Futaleufu is more than just a place; it’s an experience. It’s the feeling of standing on the edge of a mountain, gazing at a landscape that stretches as far as the eye can see. It’s the taste of traditional Chilean cuisine, made with love and local ingredients. It’s the warmth of the people, their smiles as genuine as the landscape is beautiful. It's a place where you can disconnect from the stresses of modern life and reconnect with nature and yourself. I feel so grateful to be able to share this journey with Hans, experiencing new cultures and creating memories that will last a lifetime.
Tomorrow, we plan to visit Laguna Hermana and Mirador Del Condor. I am eager to see what new perspectives and beauties they will reveal. I am also looking forward to visiting SurAndes Futaleufú again, but this time for drinks at the bar instead of dinner [according to tomorrow's itinerary]. I am curious to see what the nightlife is like in this quiet Patagonian town. Until then, buenas noches from Futaleufu!
