Immerse yourself in Kanazawa's serene museums, mysterious temples, and vibrant culinary scene. A day of reflection, intrigue, and delicious food.
A Day of Serenity and Intrigue
Today in Kanazawa was a journey of contrasts, from the tranquil spaces of the D.T. Suzuki Museum to the hidden depths of the Myouryuji Temple, known as the Ninja Temple. It was a day filled with quiet contemplation, historical intrigue, and, of course, delightful culinary experiences. Join me as I recount the highlights of this memorable day.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Curio Espresso and Vintage Design Café. It's a cozy spot, and I was in need of a strong coffee to start the day. The café had a wonderfully eclectic vibe, with vintage décor that reminded me a bit of some of the quirky cafes back in Zurich. Mei opted for a matcha latte, while Wei enjoyed a simple pastry. It’s always a joy to see him explore new tastes, even if he sometimes prefers the familiar. Curio Espresso is run by a friendly couple, Sol, originally from Seattle, and Yuko, his wife. We chatted briefly with Sol, who gave us a couple of recommendations for local spots to check out. It’s these little interactions that often make a trip so much more memorable.

After breakfast, we headed to the D.T. Suzuki Museum. As someone who appreciates spaces designed for reflection, I was particularly drawn to this museum dedicated to the life and teachings of the Buddhist philosopher D.T. Suzuki. The museum itself is a masterpiece of minimalist architecture, designed by Yoshio Taniguchi. The neutral greyscale color scheme and clean lines created an atmosphere of calm and serenity. The Water Mirror Garden was especially captivating, with its shallow basin reflecting the surrounding greenery and sky. It was the perfect place to pause, breathe, and simply be present.

In the beginner's mind there are many possibilities, but in the expert's there are few.
Inside, the museum offered a glimpse into Suzuki's life through photographs and writings. I found myself drawn to his ideas about Zen Buddhism and its influence on Western thought. The museum's emphasis on experience over explanation resonated with me, encouraging a deeper, more personal understanding. Wei, surprisingly, was also engaged, asking questions about the displays and seeming to appreciate the quiet atmosphere. Perhaps a bit of Zen is good for all of us, even a seven-year-old.
Next on our itinerary was the Myouryuji Temple, or as it’s more famously known, the Ninja Temple. This was a complete contrast to the serenity of the Suzuki Museum! While not actually a ninja hideout, the temple earned its nickname due to its intricate defensive design. Built by the Maeda lords during the Edo period, Myouryuji was designed to serve as a disguised military outpost. It was fascinating to learn about the various hidden tunnels, secret rooms, and deceptive defenses built into the temple’s structure.

The tour was conducted in Japanese, but thankfully, English guidebooks were available. As we explored the labyrinthine corridors and staircases, I couldn't help but marvel at the ingenuity of the architects. It felt like stepping into a historical mystery novel, with each corner revealing a new secret. Wei was particularly thrilled by the hidden passages and trapdoors, imagining himself as a stealthy ninja warrior. It was a fun and engaging experience for the whole family. I was glad I booked our tour in advance, as it seems to be a popular attraction. I can see why!
For lunch, we decided to try The Godburger, a local spot that had been recommended to me. I was intrigued by the name, and as a lover of a good burger, I had to see if it lived up to the hype. Located in the Korinbo area, The Godburger is a small, unassuming restaurant with a reputation for serving up some seriously delicious burgers. And let me tell you, it did not disappoint! The patties were juicy and flavorful, the buns were perfectly toasted, and the toppings were fresh and well-balanced. I opted for the classic cheeseburger, while Mei tried the bacon avocado burger. Wei, of course, went for the kids' meal, which he devoured in minutes.

What sets The Godburger apart is the chef's dedication to quality. He insists that you take the first bite without any sauce, to fully appreciate the flavor of the patty. It’s a bold move, but it pays off. The fries, which are included with the burgers, were also exceptional – crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, with just the right amount of seasoning. It’s safe to say that The Godburger has earned its place among my top burger experiences.
As evening approached, we made our way to Kifune for dinner. This Michelin-starred restaurant is known for its exquisite Kaiseki cuisine, a traditional multi-course Japanese dining experience. Securing a reservation at Kifune is notoriously difficult, but I had booked well in advance, knowing that it would be a highlight of our culinary journey in Kanazawa. The restaurant is housed in a beautifully renovated old private home, creating an intimate and charming setting.

Each dish was a work of art, both visually stunning and incredibly flavorful. The chef, Kiyokazu Nakagawa, is known for his innovative approach to cooking, combining traditional and contemporary techniques. We savored a series of seasonal delicacies, each one showcasing the best ingredients of the region. From the delicate sashimi to the rich and savory grilled fish, every bite was a revelation. The service was impeccable, with the staff explaining each dish in detail and attending to our every need. It was a truly unforgettable dining experience.
To cap off the evening, I decided to check out Oriental Brewing, a local craft beer bar. I opted for the Kanazawa Eki Ten location, which is conveniently located near the train station. Oriental Brewing has a great selection of locally brewed craft beers, with a focus on unique and interesting flavors. I tried a tasting flight of four different beers, each one offering a distinct taste profile. The bar had a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, and I enjoyed chatting with some of the locals about their favorite brews. It was a perfect way to unwind after a day of exploring.
