A Warm Welcome to Vietnam's Coffee Capital

After a long journey from Zurich, I've finally arrived in Buon Ma Thuot, ready to dive into the heart of Vietnam's coffee culture. The air is warm and humid, a stark contrast to the crisp autumn air I left behind. The city is already buzzing with life, and I can't wait to explore what it has to offer. Today, my friends and I are hitting the ground running, eager to soak in the local atmosphere and, of course, sample some of the world's best coffee.

Our first order of business was breakfast, and we stumbled upon a local gem called Breakfast Xone_bunthitnuong_268. It was a small, unassuming spot, but the aroma of grilled pork and fresh herbs wafting from the kitchen was irresistible. I opted for the *bun thit nuong*, a vermicelli noodle dish with grilled pork, fresh vegetables, and a tangy sauce. It was the perfect way to kickstart our day, flavorful and satisfying. Mei would have loved this place; she always appreciates authentic, local eateries.

With our bellies full, we made our way to the Trung Nguyen Coffee Village. This place is more than just a coffee shop; it's a celebration of Vietnamese coffee culture. The village is beautifully designed, with traditional houses, lush gardens, and even a small museum dedicated to the history of coffee in Vietnam. We wandered through the grounds, admiring the ancient coffee trees and learning about the different varieties grown in the region. Of course, we had to sample some of the coffee, and it was exceptional – rich, bold, and intensely aromatic. I bought a bag of their signature blend to take back home to Zurich. I know Wei will enjoy the strong aroma when I open the bag.

Next on our list was the Dak Lak Museum, a treasure trove of information about the region's history and culture. The museum is housed in a striking building inspired by the traditional longhouses of the E De people, the largest ethnic group in Dak Lak province. Inside, we explored exhibits on biodiversity, ethnic culture, and local history. I was particularly fascinated by the displays on the ethnic minorities of the Central Highlands, their traditional clothing, musical instruments, and unique way of life. The museum also had a section on the colonial period and the Vietnam War, offering a perspective I hadn't encountered before. The Dak Lak Museum truly felt like a miniature version of the Central Highlands, preserving cultural heritage for generations to come.

After immersing ourselves in history and culture, we were ready for lunch. We chose Cơm Nhà Restaurant, enticed by its promise of authentic Vietnamese home-style cooking. The restaurant lived up to its name, with a cozy atmosphere and a menu filled with classic dishes. I ordered the *ca kho to*, a caramelized fish stew, and it was just like my mother used to make – savory, slightly sweet, and incredibly comforting. My friends and I shared stories and laughed over our meal, feeling a sense of connection and belonging.

In the afternoon, we decided to do some shopping at Vincom Plaza Buôn Ma Thuột. This modern shopping mall offered a stark contrast to the traditional atmosphere of the coffee village and the museum. We browsed through the various stores, from fashion boutiques to electronics shops, and picked up a few souvenirs for our families back home. I found a nice silk scarf for Mei and a small wooden toy for Wei. The mall also had a variety of restaurants and cafes, so we stopped for a quick coffee break before continuing our exploration. I noticed there was a cinema here as well, Starlight, which I found out is one of the largest private film studios in Vietnam. I made a mental note to see if I could catch a movie here during my stay.

As evening approached, we made our way to Nhà Hàng Phố Núi for dinner. This restaurant is known for its diverse menu featuring dishes from all three regions of Vietnam, as well as local specialties. The restaurant had a spacious and airy ambiance, with a beautiful Koi pond and a playground for children. I opted for a traditional Central Highlands dish, *ga nuong com lam*, grilled chicken with sticky rice cooked in bamboo tubes. It was a delicious and satisfying meal, perfectly capturing the flavors of the region.

Today was just a glimpse into what Buon Ma Thuot has to offer. I'm already captivated by its blend of culture, history, and natural beauty. The people are friendly and welcoming, and the food is simply divine. I'm looking forward to tomorrow's adventure, where we'll be chasing waterfalls at Đray Nur Waterfall and exploring the Khu Du lịch Sinh thái Văn hóa Cụm Thác Đray Sáp - Gia Long. I'm sure it will be another day filled with unforgettable experiences.

The weather today was warm, with average temperatures between 73°F and 86°F. November is considered part of the cool season here, but it still feels quite hot to me. There was a slight chance of rain, but thankfully, we stayed dry throughout the day.

One thing that struck me today was the prevalence of coffee shops everywhere I went. It's clear that coffee is more than just a beverage here; it's a way of life. I'm eager to learn more about the coffee-making process and the role it plays in the local economy. Perhaps I'll even get a chance to visit a coffee plantation and see firsthand how the beans are grown and harvested. I also learned that the 9th Buon Ma Thuot Coffee Festival will be held in March of 2025. I'm sad I'll miss it, because it sounds like a wonderful event with a lot of interesting activities.

As I reflect on my first day in Buon Ma Thuot, I'm filled with a sense of excitement and anticipation. This city has already exceeded my expectations, and I can't wait to see what else it has in store. I feel grateful for the opportunity to explore this unique corner of Vietnam and share my experiences with all of you. Stay tuned for more adventures from the Coffee Capital of Vietnam!

Tomorrow, with my friends, we're planning to visit the stunning Đray Nur Waterfall and explore the eco-cultural complex of Cụm Thác Đray Sáp - Gia Long. We'll start our day with breakfast at Quán Ăn Quốc Án, followed by lunch at Quán Mẹ Phích, and cap it off with dinner at Atrani Bistro Buôn Mê Thuột. And, if we're up for it, we might even check out Ngã 6 Pub for a nightcap.
