Island Adventures: Birds, Brews, and Bees

Today was a sensory explosion, a true taste of Kangaroo Island's diverse offerings. From the thrill of birds of prey soaring overhead to the soothing scent of eucalyptus and the sweet allure of local honey, the day was a testament to the island's unique charm. It’s days like these that remind me why I traded the predictable comforts of Zurich for the open road.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at KI Fish and Chips. I know, fish and chips for breakfast might sound a bit unconventional, but I was eager to fuel up for the day's adventures. Unfortunately, it seems like the place is permanently closed according to some online sources. So I had to look for alternatives. I ended up grabbing a quick bite at a local bakery, a savory pie that was surprisingly delicious and a perfect start to the day.

Raptor Domain: A Dance with Eagles

The first stop was Raptor Domain, and what an experience it was ! I arrived just in time for their morning presentation. The trainers here have an obvious passion for what they do, rescuing and rehabilitating injured birds. The connection they share with these magnificent creatures is truly inspiring.

I watched in awe as wedge-tailed eagles soared overhead, their massive wings casting shadows as they effortlessly navigated the air. Banjo and Paterson, the laughing kookaburras, provided some comedic relief with their boisterous calls. It was an interactive experience, and I even had the chance to hold a barn owl. The feeling of its soft feathers against my skin was incredible. The presentation was not only entertaining but also incredibly educational, highlighting the importance of conservation and the role these birds play in the ecosystem.

The air crackled with excitement as these majestic creatures demonstrated their aerial prowess.

Emu Ridge Eucalyptus Oil Distillery: A Whiff of Australia

Next on the agenda was the Emu Ridge Eucalyptus Oil Distillery. The drive itself was beautiful, winding through rolling hills and dense bushland. As I approached Emu Ridge, the unmistakable scent of eucalyptus filled the air.

Emu Ridge is the only remaining commercial eucalyptus distillery in South Australia, a testament to the island's pioneering history. I took a tour of the distillery, learning about the process of extracting the oil from the native Kangaroo Island narrow leaf mallee. It was fascinating to see the old machinery and hear stories of the early days of eucalyptus oil production.

Of course, I couldn't leave without visiting the shop. It was filled with all sorts of eucalyptus-based products, from essential oils and soaps to candies and even eucalyptus-infused honey. I picked up a few souvenirs for Mei and Wei, knowing they’d appreciate the authentic taste of Kangaroo Island. I also grabbed a small bottle of eucalyptus oil for myself, already imagining using it to soothe my muscles after a long day of hiking.

Island Beehive: A Sweet Ending

My final stop for the day was the Island Beehive, a place dedicated to the Ligurian bees that call Kangaroo Island home. Kangaroo Island was declared a bee sanctuary in 1885, safeguarding the purest strain of Ligurian bees in the world. These bees are known for their gentle temperament and exceptional honey-producing abilities.

I took a guided tour and learned about the history of beekeeping on the island and the unique characteristics of Ligurian bees. It was fascinating to hear how the Davis family has been dedicated to beekeeping since the 1940s, passing down their knowledge and passion through four generations. The guide explained the sustainable practices and biosecurity measures they employ to protect these precious bees.

The highlight of the visit was, of course, the honey tasting. I sampled a variety of different honeys, each with its own distinct flavor profile. From the light and floral to the rich and robust, it was a true delight for the senses. I purchased a jar of my favorite, planning to use it in my morning tea back in Zurich, a sweet reminder of my Kangaroo Island adventure.

Reflections Over Dinner

For dinner, I decided to treat myself to a meal at Reflections Restaurant, located at the Mercure Kangaroo Island Lodge. The restaurant boasts beautiful waterfront views over American River, and I was lucky enough to snag a table by the window.

The menu featured local produce and seafood, and I opted for the King George whiting, a local specialty. The fish was cooked to perfection, flaky and flavorful, and the accompanying vegetables were fresh and vibrant. The service was impeccable, and the staff were knowledgeable and passionate about the food and wine they served. It was the perfect way to end a day filled with exploration and discovery.

As I drove back to my accommodation, the stars twinkled above me, and the sounds of the bush filled the air. I felt a sense of contentment wash over me, grateful for the opportunity to experience the magic of Kangaroo Island. Tomorrow, I plan to explore the Kingscote Silo Art and visit the Kangaroo Island Brewery. I might even swing by Kangaroo Island Ciders for a refreshing drink. Good night from Kangaroo Island!
