A Day of Tranquility and Taste

Today was a welcome change of pace, a day dedicated to enjoying the quieter, more contemplative aspects of Marrakech. It's easy to get swept up in the vibrant chaos of the souks and the Djemaa el-Fna, but sometimes the soul needs a bit of peace and reflection. Today was all about finding that balance.

The day began with a leisurely breakfast at Al Fassia Guéliz. Known for its all-female staff and traditional Moroccan cuisine, it was a delightful experience. Leaving the Riad, the March morning was crisp, with a promise of warmth later in the day. I decided to walk, soaking in the early morning atmosphere of Marrakech. The restaurant itself was elegant and inviting, a stark contrast to the bustling streets outside. I opted for a classic Moroccan breakfast – msemen (buttery flatbread) with honey and a pot of mint tea. The msemen was perfectly flaky, and the mint tea, as always, was a refreshing start to the day. The service was impeccable, the women creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere. It was a bit pricey, but the quality and experience were worth it. I made a mental note to perhaps try their lamb tagine on a future visit, having read rave reviews about it.

With a satisfied stomach, my first stop was Parc Lalla Hasna. It was a short taxi ride from Guéliz, and as soon as I stepped inside, I felt a sense of calm wash over me. The park is beautifully maintained, with manicured gardens, flowing fountains, and towering palm trees. It's a true oasis of green in the middle of the city. I found a quiet bench near a fountain and simply sat, enjoying the peace and quiet. Birdsong filled the air, and the gentle sound of the water was incredibly soothing. I observed locals and tourists alike, all enjoying the tranquility of the park. Some were reading, others were sketching, and families were enjoying picnics on the grass. It was a lovely slice of everyday life in Marrakech.

From the park, it was a short walk to the Minaret de la Koutoubia. This iconic landmark dominates the Marrakech skyline, and it's impossible not to be awestruck by its grandeur. While non-Muslims aren't allowed inside the mosque itself, I was content to admire it from the outside. The minaret is a masterpiece of Moorish architecture, with intricate geometric patterns and a towering presence. I learned that the Koutoubia Mosque has a rich history, dating back to the 12th century. It served as a model for other famous structures, including the Giralda in Seville and the Hassan Tower in Rabat. I spent some time wandering around the mosque's gardens, taking in the views and reflecting on the history of this magnificent structure.

The beauty of Marrakech lies not just in its bustling markets and vibrant squares, but also in its serene parks and spiritual landmarks.

Next on my list was the Cyber Park Arsat Moulay Abdesalam, a place where nature and technology blend seamlessly. It's located along the historical wall south of Arset Moulay Abdeslam. This park was a delightful surprise. It's not just a green space; it's also a place where you can connect to the internet, learn about the history of telecommunications, and enjoy a peaceful stroll. The park has free WiFi hotspots throughout, and there are interactive kiosks where you can learn about the park's history and the evolution of communication technology. I found a quiet spot in the rose garden and spent some time reading, enjoying the fragrant air and the colorful blooms. The Cyber Park is a testament to Marrakech's ability to embrace modernity while preserving its rich heritage. It was originally created in the 18th century by Prince Moulay Abdeslam. The park also features a telecommunication museum.

As the afternoon wore on, I started to think about lunch. I decided to try Le Nid'cigogne, a French restaurant not too far from Cyber Park. It was a charming little place with a cozy atmosphere. I opted for a simple salad and a glass of local wine. The food was fresh and delicious, and the service was friendly and efficient. It was a nice change of pace from the Moroccan cuisine I had been enjoying, and it provided a welcome energy boost for the rest of the day.

With renewed energy, I decided to revisit Parc Lalla Hasna. The late afternoon light cast a golden glow over the gardens, and the atmosphere was even more magical than before. I found a different bench this time, overlooking the Koutoubia Mosque. As the sun began to set, the muezzin's call to prayer echoed through the city. It was a truly moving experience, a reminder of the deep spirituality that permeates Marrakech.

For dinner, I had made a reservation at Naranj Libanese, a Lebanese restaurant known for its vibrant flavors and cozy atmosphere. It's conveniently located near my riad. The restaurant was bustling with activity, but I was quickly shown to my table. I started with the Mezze Plate, a selection of Lebanese dips and salads served with warm pita bread. Everything was incredibly flavorful and fresh. For my main course, I chose the Beef Shawarma, which was perfectly spiced and tender. The service was attentive, and the overall atmosphere was lively and fun. It was a delicious and satisfying end to a day of exploration.

To cap off the evening, I decided to indulge in a nightcap at the Churchill Bar, located in the luxurious La Mamounia hotel. The bar is named after Winston Churchill, who was a frequent guest at the hotel. The Churchill Bar exudes an air of old-world glamour, with its plush velvet seating, dark wood paneling, and soft lighting. The cocktail menu was extensive, and I finally settled on a classic martini. As I sipped my drink, I listened to the live jazz music and soaked in the sophisticated ambiance. It was a perfect way to end a day of tranquility and taste.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, I'm excited about the prospect of venturing outside the city for a camel ride in the Agafay Desert. It will be a completely different experience from today, a chance to connect with nature and explore the vast landscapes that surround Marrakech. I’m especially looking forward to lunch at La Rosa Agafay, hoping for some delicious food with a view. But for now, I'm content to savor the memories of today, a day of peace, reflection, and culinary delights.

As I reflect on my day, I realize that Marrakech is a city of contrasts. It's a place where ancient traditions meet modern innovations, where bustling markets give way to tranquil gardens, and where the call to prayer echoes through the streets alongside the sounds of live music. It's a city that stimulates all the senses, and it's a place that I'm quickly falling in love with. The weather in March continues to be ideal, with daytime highs perfect for exploring and mild evenings for enjoying the city's nightlife. I am so glad I decided to extend my stay here in Marrakech, and I am looking forward to what tomorrow brings.

Back at Riad Nafis, I'm already anticipating the adventures that await tomorrow. The Agafay Desert promises a stark contrast to the lush gardens of today, and I'm eager to experience the vastness of the Moroccan landscape. I'm also slightly regretting not packing a travel adapter, as charging my devices has become a bit of a challenge. It's a minor inconvenience, but a reminder that even the most organized traveler can forget something. I’ll need to find a shop that sells them tomorrow.
