A Day of Desert Magic

Today was an immersion into a different world, a landscape that hummed with a quiet energy far removed from the bustling souks of Marrakech. It was a day of gentle exploration, delicious tastes, and unexpected encounters, a reminder of why I set out on this solo journey in the first place.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Henna Café. I always appreciate a good start to the day, and the atmosphere at Henna Café was just perfect, as always. It’s become a bit of a tradition for me during this trip. I savored a traditional Moroccan breakfast, fueling up for the adventures that lay ahead. It’s fascinating how a simple meal can set the tone for the entire day. This morning, the lentil soup was particularly comforting, especially knowing what the day held.

The drive to the Agafay Desert (Désert d’Agafay) was an experience in itself. The landscape gradually transformed from the ochre hues of Marrakech to a stark, rocky terrain that stretched as far as the eye could see. It was a landscape reminiscent of a lunar surface, a far cry from the golden dunes I had initially imagined when planning this trip. Yet, its stark beauty was captivating. The temperature in March is ideal for outdoor activities in the Agafay Desert, with warm days and cool nights creating the perfect environment for exploration.

My first adventure in the Agafay was a camel ride. Now, I must admit, I approached this with a mix of excitement and trepidation. I’ve always been fascinated by these gentle giants, but I’ve never quite felt comfortable around them. However, the camel I was assigned was a calm and patient creature, and with the help of the Berber guide, I soon found myself settling into the rhythmic sway of the ride.

The desert is a silent teacher, revealing its secrets to those who are willing to listen.

As we traversed the undulating landscape, I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe. The vastness of the desert was humbling, a reminder of my own insignificance in the face of nature's grandeur. The silence was broken only by the soft padding of the camel's feet and the occasional call of a distant bird. It was a meditative experience, a chance to disconnect from the digital world and reconnect with my inner self. I couldn’t help but think of Mei and Wei back in Zurich. I know they would have loved this experience.

After the camel ride, it was time for lunch at La Rosa Agafay. The restaurant was a welcome oasis, offering stunning views of the surrounding desert. I indulged in a traditional Moroccan tagine, savoring the rich flavors and fragrant spices. The tagine was cooked to perfection, the meat tender and succulent, the vegetables bursting with freshness. I paired it with a glass of mint tea, the perfect complement to the hearty meal. The combination of good food and breathtaking scenery was simply divine.

The afternoon was dedicated to exploring more of the Agafay Desert. I spent some time simply wandering through the rocky terrain, taking in the unique flora and fauna. I was surprised to discover that the desert was not as barren as I had imagined. There were hardy plants and shrubs clinging to life in the arid landscape, a testament to nature's resilience. I even spotted a few desert creatures, lizards darting among the rocks and birds soaring overhead.

As the sun began to set, I found myself reflecting on the day's experiences. The Agafay Desert had exceeded my expectations. It was a place of stark beauty, a place of tranquility, a place of unexpected discoveries. It was a reminder that adventure can be found in the most unlikely of places. Perhaps I will bring Mei and Wei here next time, I thought, as I watched the sun dip below the horizon, painting the sky in hues of orange and purple.

Dinner at Chez Brahim Restaurant in Marrakech was the perfect ending to a day filled with desert adventures. Situated near Jamaa el Fnaa, it offered a cozy and welcoming atmosphere. The restaurant is known for its authentic Moroccan cuisine, and I was eager to try their specialties. I opted for a traditional tagine, and it was absolutely delicious. The flavors were rich and complex, and the portion was generous. I couldn't resist trying some of their pastries as well, and they were the perfect sweet treat to end the meal. The friendly service and reasonable prices made it a truly enjoyable dining experience. It was a great way to reflect on the day's adventures and savor the flavors of Marrakech.

Tomorrow, I plan to visit Anima (André Heller Garden) and La Ménara Pavilion, seeking a different kind of beauty within Marrakech itself. I might even do some shopping at Latifshop Moroccan Artisanat & déco, to find a souvenir to bring back to Zurich. But for now, I am content to savor the memories of this day, a day spent in the embrace of the Agafay Desert, a day that will forever hold a special place in my heart.
