A Day of Discovery

Today, I set out to further immerse myself in the cultural tapestry of Marrakech, a city that continues to surprise and enchant me at every turn. My explorations led me through the hallowed halls of a historic madrasa, into museums filled with stories of the past and present, and along the bustling paths of the vibrant medina. It was a day of learning, reflection, and sensory overload—in the best possible way.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Mandala Society. This charming spot, with its clearly labeled vegan options and a delightful rooftop terrace, was the perfect place to fuel up for a day of exploration. I opted for the avocado toast, a simple yet satisfying dish that gave me the energy I needed. The Mandala Society is part of Amazoz, a collective dedicated to creating unique, welcoming spaces where cuisine and conviviality come together. Rooted in respect for local culture, artisans, and ingredients, Mandala embodies this vision—offering authentic dining in a thoughtfully designed atmosphere.

Fueled and ready, I ventured into the heart of the Medina, my first stop being the Ben Youssef Madrasa. As I approached, the intricate details of the building's facade immediately captured my attention. The Ben Youssef Madrasa, a 14th-century Koranic school, has been lovingly restored, and has a serene courtyard with a central, water-filled basin; and facades enhanced with tiling, stucco, and carved cedar. Once inside, I was transported to another world, a world of scholarly pursuits and artistic expression.

The Madrasa is a stunning example of Islamic architecture, with its elaborate carvings, colorful mosaics, and peaceful courtyard. Wandering through the student dormitories and prayer halls, I couldn't help but imagine what life must have been like for the young scholars who once walked these halls. It was a place where knowledge and faith intertwined, creating an atmosphere of reverence and contemplation. The madrassa was once a learning center where 175 youths would be taken to learn above all the Koran, but also philosophy, astronomy, medicine, and other worthy pursuits. The intricate patterns and strapwork around the arched, wooden doors were amazing.

Leaving the Madrasa, I made my way to the Dar Si Said Museum, eager to delve deeper into Moroccan art and craftsmanship. The museum is housed in a 19th-century palace that once belonged to the brother of a Grand Vizier, and the building itself is a work of art. The Dar Si Said Museum is the oldest museum in the city with the greatest number of works of art exhibited. The beauty of the setting, a luxuriant riad, highlights the collections. As I wandered through the various rooms, I was struck by the diversity and skill of Moroccan artisans. From intricately woven carpets to delicate ceramics and ornate jewelry, each piece told a story of tradition, creativity, and cultural identity.

After immersing myself in the world of Moroccan arts, I sought a quiet place for lunch. La Table du Riad, known for its elegant and intimate culinary experience, was the perfect choice. I savored the flavors of Moroccan cuisine, each dish a testament to the country's rich culinary heritage. This restaurant is one of the hottest tickets in town. The flavors were amazing.

My afternoon took an introspective turn with a visit to the Museum of Women - Women's Museum. This museum is dedicated to celebrating the contributions of women throughout Moroccan history and culture. The museum features a diverse range of exhibits that delve into women's roles in society, culture, and politics, offering a nuanced perspective that is often overlooked in traditional historical narratives. It's a perfect stop for those seeking to enrich their knowledge of gender history while enjoying the artistic beauty of Marrakesh.

As the afternoon waned, I decided to indulge in a bit of retail therapy at Boutique EL Fenn. El Fenn is known as one of the most stylish boutique riads in Marrakech's medina. This stylish boutique offered a curated selection of Moroccan crafts, clothing, and jewelry, all reflecting the country's unique artistic aesthetic. I picked up a few souvenirs for Mei and Wei, hoping to bring a piece of Marrakech back to Zurich with me. I found a couple of bracelets for Mei and some small trinkets for Wei.

For my final meal of the day, I chose Le Jardin Restaurant Marrakech Medina, enticed by its reputation as a green oasis in the heart of the Medina. Le Jardin Restaurant is beautiful and full of lush green plants. The fast service displays a high level of quality at this restaurant. As most reviewers say, the decor at Le Jardin Restaurant Marrakech Medina is cute. As I stepped through the doors, I was immediately enveloped in a tranquil atmosphere, a welcome respite from the bustling streets outside. The restaurant is set in a renovated 16th Century building, and the place really gives you the feeling of being in a garden – as the name proposes.

The restaurant's lush greenery, combined with its traditional Moroccan decor, created a magical setting for my final meal in the Medina. I savored the flavors of Moroccan cuisine, each bite a reminder of the incredible culinary journey I had experienced during my time in Marrakech. The cozy atmosphere of this spot makes customers feel relaxed and have a good time. The energetic staff welcomes visitors all year round.

As I reflect on my day, I am struck by the depth and richness of Marrakech's cultural heritage. This city is not just a place of stunning architecture and vibrant markets; it's a living testament to the power of human creativity, resilience, and faith. Tomorrow, I plan to visit Parc Lalla Hasna, Minaret de la Koutoubia, and Cyber Park Arsat Moulay Abdesalam. I'm also looking forward to trying new restaurants such as Al Fassia Guéliz, Le Nid´cigogne, and Naranj Libanese. And perhaps a drink at Churchill Bar.
