Chasing Horizons in the Dandenongs

Today was a delightful escape into nature, a welcome change from the city bustle. I joined my friends for a journey to the Dandenong Ranges, a verdant escape just east of Melbourne. The promise of steam trains, panoramic views, and lush forests was too enticing to resist. It was a day filled with laughter, exploration, and a renewed appreciation for the natural beauty that surrounds this vibrant city.

Our day began with breakfast at Miss Mi Restaurant & Bar, nestled within Le Méridien Melbourne. The reviews I'd read spoke of Chef Migo's culinary magic, and they weren't wrong! The Asian-inspired dishes were a delightful fusion of flavors, and the vibrant atmosphere set the perfect tone for our day of adventure. It’s always a treat to start the day with a meal that excites the palate, especially when you know you’ll need the energy for a day of exploring.

Fueled and ready, we set off towards the Dandenong Ranges National Park. The drive itself was scenic, winding through charming towns and offering glimpses of the rolling hills ahead. The air felt fresher here, a world away from the city's hum.

Our first stop was the iconic Puffing Billy Railway. This century-old steam train is a true relic of Australian railway heritage. As we boarded, the sound of the whistle and the billowing steam transported us back in time. The open-sided carriages offered unobstructed views of the lush fern gullies and towering Mountain Ash trees.

The journey on Puffing Billy isn't just a train ride; it's a sensory experience, a nostalgic journey through time and nature.

I remember Lin’s fascination with trains back in Kelowna, and I wish she could have been here to experience this. Perhaps one day, I'll bring my whole family to experience this enchanting ride. The history of Puffing Billy is fascinating. Built in the early 1900s, it was one of four low-cost narrow-gauge lines designed to open up remote areas. It transported everything from timber and farm produce to mail and livestock. Saved by dedicated volunteers after a landslide in 1953, it continues to delight locals and tourists alike.

As the train chugged along, we dangled our legs out of the carriage, feeling the wind in our hair and the thrill of adventure. The scenery was breathtaking, a tapestry of green hues and towering trees. The rhythmic clanking of the train and the occasional whistle created a symphony of sounds that resonated with the surrounding nature.

After our memorable ride on Puffing Billy, we made our way to SkyHigh Mount Dandenong. As we ascended the winding road, the views became increasingly spectacular. Reaching the summit, we were greeted with panoramic vistas of Melbourne and the surrounding landscape. It was a sight to behold, a sprawling cityscape framed by rolling hills and lush greenery.

The air was crisp and clean, and the sun cast a golden glow over the scene. We spent some time soaking in the views, taking photos, and simply enjoying the tranquility of the moment. The SkyHigh complex itself offered various attractions, including gardens, a maze, and a cafe. We explored the gardens, marveling at the vibrant blooms and intricate designs.

Before lunch, we took a moment to remember the Kokoda Track Memorial Walk, also known as the 1000 Steps, located within the Dandenong Ranges National Park. This renowned tourist spot pays tribute to the soldiers who fought and died on the Kokoda Trail in Papua New Guinea during World War II. The plaques along the trail depict the lives of these brave soldiers, adding a poignant layer to the natural beauty of the area. It’s a humbling reminder of the sacrifices made for our freedom.

For lunch, we stopped at The Moat. Located beneath the State Library, the restaurant had a unique ambiance. I enjoyed the creative dishes and wine selection. It was a perfect spot for a relaxed lunch.

As evening approached, we decided to experience Melbourne’s nightlife at Union Electric Bar & Rooftop. The bar was in a laneway in Chinatown. The rooftop gin garden was a great place to relax. The staff were friendly, and the atmosphere was buzzing with energy. It was a great way to end our day of exploration.

The Dandenong Ranges National Park itself is a treasure trove of natural beauty. From tranquil forest walks to quaint hilltop towns, there's something for everyone. The park is home to charismatic animals like lyrebirds and wallabies, and the towering Mountain Ash trees are among the tallest flowering trees in the world. Whether you're conquering the 1000 Steps, discovering Sherbrooke Falls, or simply enjoying the views, the Dandenongs offer a rainforest getaway on Melbourne's doorstep.

Accessibility is also well-considered in the Dandenong Ranges. Many picnic grounds have wheelchair-accessible facilities, and some walking tracks are suitable for wheelchairs. Puffing Billy Railway also offers accessible carriages and assistance for passengers with reduced mobility. It's heartening to see efforts made to ensure that everyone can enjoy the beauty of this region.

Tomorrow, we’re planning to explore the Yarra Valley & Dandenongs Ranges, including a visit to the Yarra Valley Chocolaterie & Ice Creamery and the Heide Museum of Modern Art. I am looking forward to more delicious treats and cultural immersion.

Today was a reminder of the importance of taking time to connect with nature and appreciate the beauty that surrounds us. The Dandenong Ranges offer a perfect escape from the city, a chance to breathe fresh air, marvel at stunning views, and create lasting memories with friends. It’s a place I know I’ll return to again and again.

As I reflect on the day, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to experience such a beautiful part of Australia. The Dandenong Ranges have captured my heart, and I can't wait to see what adventures tomorrow will bring.
