A Day of Discovery in Melbourne

Today marked the beginning of our Melbourne adventure, and what a start it was! After a long journey from Kelowna, with a stopover that felt like a mini-adventure in itself, stepping onto Melbourne soil was a breath of fresh air. The crisp April air, a bit cooler than I'm used to, was invigorating. I couldn't wait to dive into what this city had to offer, especially with my friends by my side.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Cumulus Inc., a place that came highly recommended. Walking in, I immediately appreciated the modern, airy ambiance – high ceilings, wide spaces, and an open kitchen where you could see the chefs working their magic. It reminded me of some of the bustling eateries back in Douliu, where the energy of the kitchen is part of the dining experience. I ordered their famous baked eggs, and it was the perfect start to fuel our explorations. The coffee, of course, was superb – Melbourne's reputation for excellent coffee is well-deserved!

From there, we ventured to the Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria - Melbourne Gardens. Autumn in the gardens is truly something special. The crisp air and the changing leaves created a picturesque scene. Mei-Ling would have loved it here; she always appreciates the beauty of nature and the tranquility it brings. We spent a good couple of hours wandering through the different sections, admiring the diverse plant life and enjoying the peaceful atmosphere. It was a welcome escape from the city buzz, a serene oasis right in the heart of Melbourne. The gardens reminded me a bit of the Okanagan Valley back home, but with a distinctly Australian flair. I can imagine Lin would have loved running around the gardens, discovering all the hidden nooks and crannies.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences come from the simplest moments – a walk in a garden, a quiet reflection, a shared meal with friends.

Next on our itinerary was the Shrine of Remembrance. This monument is a powerful tribute to Australians who have served in war. The architecture is striking, and the solemn atmosphere encourages quiet reflection. Walking through the galleries, reading the stories and seeing the artifacts, I felt a deep sense of respect and gratitude. It was a humbling experience, reminding me of the sacrifices made for peace and freedom. I thought about my own family history, about the importance of remembering and honoring those who came before us. The Shrine offered breathtaking vistas of the memorial gardens and Melbourne.

Afterward, we strolled along Southbank Promenade, a vibrant stretch along the Yarra River. The promenade was bustling with activity – street performers, outdoor cafes, and people enjoying the beautiful autumn afternoon. We stopped for lunch at Taxi Kitchen, where we savored modern Australian cuisine with panoramic views of the city. The food was excellent, and the ambiance was lively and fun. It was the perfect spot to soak in the energy of Melbourne. Tracey from January 2025 noted that it was a 'Great location with a wide range of menu options. Very convenient for pre-event dinner - whether you're going to the theatre or the tennis.'

As evening approached, we decided to experience Melbourne's cocktail scene at Eau De Vie Melbourne. Finding the entrance was a bit of an adventure in itself – a discreet door down Malthouse Lane. Stepping inside was like entering another world, a dimly lit, intimate space with a magician's library vibe. The bartenders were true artists, crafting inventive and delicious cocktails. I opted for their Old Fashioned, which was listed as one of the top ten cocktails in the world. It was the perfect way to unwind after a day of exploring. The staff were incredibly knowledgeable and passionate, enhancing the whole experience. It reminded me of some of the hidden tea houses in Taiwan, where the atmosphere is just as important as the tea itself. Before heading back to Le Méridien Melbourne, we enjoyed some tapas, which were refined and well-thought. My friends and I shared our thoughts on the day's adventures.
