Echoes of the Renaissance

Today, Urbino truly captured our hearts, transporting us back to the glorious days of the Renaissance. From the awe-inspiring art within the Ducal Palace to the lively atmosphere of the Republic Square, every moment was a vivid tapestry woven with history, culture, and the simple joys of family. It was a day of exploration and connection, deepening our appreciation for this remarkable city.

Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Caffè del Teatro. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee mingled with the sweet scent of pastries, creating the perfect start. Lin was particularly thrilled with her *piadina*, a local flatbread, while Mei-Ling enjoyed a cappuccino and I savored a strong espresso, Taiwanese style, of course. The cafe's location offered a beautiful view of the city, setting a serene tone for the day ahead.
Fueled and ready, our first destination was the National Gallery of the Marche, housed within the magnificent Ducal Palace. This palace, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is an architectural marvel, and I was immediately struck by its imposing yet refined structure. It was commissioned by Duke Federico da Montefeltro in the 15th century, a man who transformed Urbino into a center of Renaissance art and culture.
As we wandered through the palace's many rooms, we were enveloped in the world of Renaissance art. The collections of the National Gallery of the Marche include paintings and sculptures from the 13th to the 18th century, ceramics, coins, drawings, and some furnishings. The highlights were undoubtedly the masterpieces by Piero della Francesca, including the Flagellation and the Madonna of Senigallia. These works are striking for their clarity, perspective, and serene beauty. Lin was particularly fascinated by Raphael's La Muta, a portrait of a silent woman, and we spent a long time discussing the mystery behind her expression.
Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.

Exploring the Ducal Palace was like stepping back in time. We saw Federico da Montefeltro's *studiolo*, a small room decorated with intricate wood inlay, and imagined the Duke spending hours reading and contemplating within its walls. We also visited the Chapel of Absolution and the Temple of the Muses, each a testament to the Duke's devotion to classical and humanistic studies.
After immersing ourselves in art, we were ready for lunch. We chose Posta Vecchia, a restaurant known for its traditional Urbino cuisine. The restaurant's cozy atmosphere and friendly staff immediately made us feel at home. Mei-Ling and I decided to try the *crescia*, a local flatbread similar to *piadina* but even more flavorful, while Lin opted for a simple pasta dish. The food was delicious, and the service was excellent.
With our bellies full, we strolled to the Republic Square, the heart of Urbino. This square is the central hub of the city, where five main streets converge. The square was bustling with activity, with students, locals, and tourists all mingling together. We sat by the fountain, enjoying the lively atmosphere and watching the world go by. Lin, ever curious, chased pigeons across the square, her laughter echoing through the air.
As the afternoon waned, we made our way to La Terrazza del Duca Urbino for dinner. This restaurant, as its name suggests, boasts a terrace with stunning views of the Ducal Palace. The setting was magical, with the palace illuminated against the darkening sky. The food was exquisite, with a focus on local and seasonal ingredients. I particularly enjoyed the *tagliatelle* with truffle, a regional specialty. The service was attentive and the ambiance romantic.
To cap off our day, Mei-Ling and I decided to visit MaiSenza Lounge Bar for a nightcap. The bar had a relaxed and sophisticated vibe, with comfortable seating and a wide selection of wines and cocktails. I opted for a glass of local red wine, while Mei-Ling chose a classic Negroni. We sat and talked, reflecting on the day's experiences and savoring the quiet moments together. Lin, of course, was fast asleep back at the Hotel Raffaello.
As I reflect on our day in Urbino, I'm struck by the city's ability to transport you to another time. The Renaissance spirit is alive and well here, evident in the art, architecture, and the very atmosphere of the city. It was a day of discovery, connection, and appreciation for the beauty and richness of Italian culture.
Tomorrow, we plan to explore more of Urbino's hidden gems, including the Scalinata del pozzo della polenta and the Arco di Fondarca. I am eager to see what other treasures this city holds. We will start our day with breakfast at Cafe’ Trentatre’, before heading out to explore. I am also hoping to find some unique souvenirs at Antonio, a local shop.
Urbino has a lot of charm, and I'm excited to continue our exploration of this Renaissance gem with my family. I am also grateful for the opportunity to share these experiences with you, my readers. Thank you for joining us on this journey.
