Family Adventure in the Enchanting Cinque Terre
Day 5: Conquering Corniglia: Steps, Views, and Ligurian Delights
Discover Corniglia's charm: Ascend the Lardarina, savor local cuisine, and soak in breathtaking views of the Cinque Terre coastline.
A Day in Corniglia: Reaching New Heights
Today's adventure was all about conquering Corniglia, the only Cinque Terre village that doesn't sit directly on the sea. Perched high atop a cliff, it promised panoramic views and a unique charm that I was eager to explore with my family. After our time in Manarola and Vernazza, I was excited to see what Corniglia had to offer.
Our day began with quite the ascent. Corniglia is famous (or perhaps infamous) for the Scalinata Lardarina, a staircase of 382 steps that zigzags its way from the train station to the village center. Lin, always full of energy, treated it like a challenge, racing ahead with Mei-Ling close behind. I took my time, pausing to catch my breath and admire the views that unfolded with each step. The vibrant colors of the terraced vineyards and the azure Ligurian Sea were truly a sight to behold.

The climb might have been strenuous, but the reward was well worth it: a charming village with breathtaking views and a taste of authentic Ligurian life.
Reaching the top, we were greeted by the heart of Corniglia, a maze of narrow alleys and colorful houses. We strolled along Via Fieschi, the main street, lined with shops and restaurants. It was noticeably quieter than the other villages we'd visited, a welcome respite from the crowds. I could see why some consider Corniglia a refuge. We paused to admire the Oratory of Santa Caterina, a simple yet elegant church.
Our exploration led us to the Chiesa di San Pietro, the parish church of Corniglia. Built in 1334, it stands as a testament to Ligurian Gothic architecture. The white Carrara marble rose window is stunning. Inside, the basilica plan with three naves was beautiful. I found myself admiring the blend of Gothic and Baroque styles.

After soaking in the history and architecture, it was time for lunch. We chose Il Grottino, drawn in by the promise of authentic Ligurian cuisine. Though I was momentarily confused as I thought this restaurant was in Monterosso, I realized there are several restaurants with the same name. We savored homemade pasta with pesto, a regional specialty, and fresh seafood. Lin enjoyed a simple focaccia, while Mei-Ling and I shared a bottle of local wine. The atmosphere was relaxed and welcoming, and the food was delicious.

With our bellies full, we decided to treat ourselves to an aperitivo at Terza Terra. This panoramic bar offers stunning views of the Cinque Terre coastline. Sipping on a refreshing spritz, we watched as the sun began to dip below the horizon, painting the sky in hues of orange and pink. It was the perfect way to end our day in Corniglia.

Corniglia, though small and quiet, captured my heart with its authentic charm and breathtaking views. The climb up the Lardarina was a challenge, but the reward was well worth it. As we headed back to our hotel in Monterosso al Mare, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to share this experience with my family.

Tomorrow, we're off to Porto Venere, a town just south of the Cinque Terre. We plan to explore the Grotta di Lord Byron, visit the Castello Doria, and wander through the Kalos Boutique for some handmade Italian designs. I am looking forward to more coastal exploration and Ligurian discoveries!
