Solo Adventure in the Heart of Huaraz
Day 6: A Day of Tranquility and Taste in Huaraz
Discover Huaraz's serene parks, historical plazas, and culinary delights on a solo journey through the heart of Peru.
Finding Peace in the Heart of Huaraz
Today was a day of gentle exploration and quiet reflection here in Huaraz. After several days of more strenuous activity, I decided to dedicate today to soaking in the local atmosphere and enjoying the simple pleasures of this charming city. It's amazing how much you can discover when you slow down and allow yourself to wander without a strict agenda.
My day began with a delightful breakfast at Hierba Buena Restaurante. I opted for a traditional Peruvian breakfast, which included fresh juice, strong coffee, and a hearty portion of scrambled eggs with local herbs. The restaurant had a cozy, family-run feel, and I enjoyed watching the locals start their day as I planned mine. The owner, upon learning I was visiting from Kelowna, shared a story about a trip he took to Canada many years ago. It’s these small connections that make traveling so special.

After breakfast, I made my way to Parque Monolitico. This park is home to an impressive collection of monoliths and stone carvings from the Recuay culture. As I wandered through the park, I was struck by the artistry and skill of the ancient people who created these pieces. The park itself is a peaceful oasis in the middle of the city, and I spent a good hour simply sitting on a bench, sketching in my travel journal, and enjoying the tranquility. It was fascinating to see these relics of the past juxtaposed against the backdrop of modern Huaraz.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the quiet corners of a city, away from the well-trodden tourist paths.
Next on my itinerary was the Plazuela de Belén. This traditional plaza is located in the Belén neighborhood, known for its historic architecture and tight-knit community. As I approached the plaza, I was immediately struck by the beautiful church that anchors one side of the square. I took some time to admire the intricate details of the façade and the peaceful atmosphere inside. The plaza itself was bustling with activity. Children played, vendors sold local crafts, and elderly residents chatted on benches. I sat for a while, observing the scene and feeling a sense of connection to the local culture.

For lunch, I decided to try Trivio Resto Bar. This place had been recommended to me by several locals as a great spot for both food and drinks. I opted for the Thai salad, which was a refreshing and flavorful mix of fresh vegetables, noodles, and a spicy peanut sauce. The resto bar had a lively atmosphere, and I enjoyed the upbeat music and friendly service. It was a great place to relax and recharge after a morning of exploring.

As the afternoon wore on, I found myself drawn back to the Plazuela de Belén. The light was particularly beautiful at this time of day, casting long shadows across the square and highlighting the colors of the buildings and the surrounding mountains. I decided to take a walk through the Belén neighborhood, getting lost in the narrow streets and admiring the traditional houses with their colorful doors and flower-filled balconies. It felt like stepping back in time, and I was grateful for the opportunity to experience a more authentic side of Huaraz.
Dinner was at Wayta - El Chef Andino, a restaurant that focuses on modern interpretations of traditional Peruvian dishes. I started with a Pisco Sour, the classic Peruvian cocktail, and then ordered the lomo saltado, a stir-fry dish with beef, onions, tomatoes, and potatoes. The food was absolutely delicious, and the presentation was impeccable. The chef clearly takes pride in his craft, and I appreciated the attention to detail and the use of fresh, local ingredients.

To cap off the evening, I ventured to Kuya Kuya Coctelería Profesional Novoandina - Huaraz, a cocktail bar known for its innovative drinks made with local fruits and spirits. I sampled a few of their creations, each one more unique and flavorful than the last. The bartender was a true mixologist, and he clearly had a passion for his craft. The atmosphere was intimate and inviting, and I enjoyed chatting with some of the other patrons. It was the perfect way to end a day of peaceful exploration.

Reflecting on the day, I am struck by the simple beauty and charm of Huaraz. It’s a city that rewards those who take the time to slow down and appreciate its hidden corners. From the ancient monoliths to the bustling plazas and the innovative cuisine, Huaraz has something to offer every traveler. Tomorrow, I am planning to visit High Summit Peru SAC and Los Andes [If I can arrange for a tour guide] to explore more of the region's natural beauty, but I will always cherish the memories of this day of tranquility and taste.
As I prepare for tomorrow's adventures, I realize I forgot to pack my sunglasses and travel adapter. I will need to pick these up at Mercado Central de Huaraz before embarking on the day's activities. Despite these minor setbacks, I am filled with anticipation for what lies ahead. This solo adventure in the heart of Huaraz has already exceeded my expectations, and I am eager to see what other treasures this region holds. I am truly grateful for this opportunity to explore, learn, and connect with the local culture. I am also grateful for Mei-Ling's encouragement to take this trip, and I know she and Lin would have loved exploring the Plazuela de Belén with me. Perhaps one day we can return together.
In the meantime, I will continue to share my experiences and insights with you, my readers. Thank you for joining me on this journey. Until tomorrow, may your own travels be filled with peace, discovery, and delicious food.
