Solo Adventure in the Heart of Huaraz
Day 1: First Impressions of Huaraz: A Blend of Culture and Anticipation
Discover the heart of Huaraz as I explore its main square, historic church, and vibrant culinary scene. A perfect start to my solo adventure!
Embracing the Spirit of Huaraz
After a long journey from Kelowna, involving a flight to Lima and a bus ride to Huaraz, I was eager to stretch my legs and immerse myself in the local culture. The crisp mountain air and the vibrant atmosphere of this city nestled in the Andes were exactly what I needed. I’m excited to share my first day’s experiences, a blend of historical exploration and culinary delights, as I prepare for the adventures that lie ahead.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at El Fogón. I opted for the *desayuno del escalador*, a hearty mix of pancakes, eggs, bacon, and fresh juice, all washed down with a cup of *café shuqush*. It was the perfect fuel for a day of exploring. The cafe had a quiet ambiance, which I appreciated, and the staff were very welcoming.
With a full stomach, I set out to explore the Main Square of Huaraz, also known as Plaza de Armas. The square was bustling with activity, a mix of locals and tourists all enjoying the beautiful day. The topiary and central fountain added to the charm, creating a perfect spot to sit and soak in the surroundings. There were vendors selling handicrafts and local snacks, offering a taste of authentic Peruvian culture.
Sometimes, the best way to understand a place is to simply wander, observe, and let the atmosphere seep into your soul.
As I wandered around the square, I couldn't help but notice the stunning views of the surrounding mountains. It’s July, so the weather is ideal for exploring, with clear skies and comfortable temperatures. The square was alive with activity; I saw parades, music performances, and street vendors. Despite a few mentions of pickpockets, the atmosphere felt safe and welcoming.
Next, I visited the Iglesia Del Señor De La Soledad. This church holds a special place in the hearts of the locals, as it houses the image of the Lord of Solitude, the patron saint of Huaraz. The original church dates back to the city's foundation in the sixteenth century, but it was rebuilt after earthquakes in 1725 and 1970. The modern architecture, with its three naves and large murals, was impressive. I took a moment to sit in quiet contemplation, appreciating the serene environment. The story of the church is quite moving; as the legend goes, an old woman found the image of Christ near a lagoon and every time they moved the image to a different location, it reappeared at the same spot. The locals believed that the Lord wanted a temple built there, hence the name “Señor de la Soledad”.
For lunch, I headed to Hierba Buena Restaurante, drawn in by its reputation for traditional Peruvian cuisine. The restaurant is located on Jr. Jose Olaya, a street that survived the 1970 earthquake, adding to its historical charm. I decided to try the *pachamanca*, a traditional Andean dish of meat and vegetables cooked in an underground oven. The flavors were rich and earthy, a true taste of the region. I also sampled some local ham, which was equally delicious. The cozy atmosphere and friendly staff made the experience even more enjoyable.
In the afternoon, I couldn't resist the urge to do some shopping. I visited Arisha Andean Store, a place recommended for its unique handmade treasures and authentic souvenirs. As someone who appreciates craftsmanship, I was thrilled to find a variety of beautiful items, from textiles to carvings. I ended up buying a hand-knitted beanie made from alpaca wool, perfect for the cooler evenings in the mountains. Supporting local artisans is important to me, and I felt good knowing that my purchase was contributing to the community.
Before dinner, I made a stop at Lliclla Rooftop Bar for a drink. Located in Parque Ginebra, this bar offers stunning panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. I ordered a local craft beer and watched the sunset, the vibrant colors painting the sky. The ambiance was lively, with music and a mix of locals and tourists. It was a great way to unwind and reflect on the day's adventures.
For dinner, I chose Trivio Resto Bar, known for its fusion of local ingredients with international culinary techniques. The restaurant had a lively atmosphere, with soft music and occasional live performances. I started with a fresh ceviche, followed by a hearty Andean specialty. The flavors were complex and satisfying, a testament to the chef's skill. I paired my meal with a glass of local wine, completing the culinary experience. Trivio also has vegan options, such as a black bean veggie burger. The staff was energetic and the service was excellent.
After dinner, I took a leisurely stroll back to Hotel La Joya, enjoying the cool night air and the quiet streets. The hotel is comfortable and centrally located, making it the perfect base for my adventures. I spent some time journaling, reflecting on the day's experiences and planning for tomorrow. I’m particularly excited about visiting Laguna Churup.
Tomorrow, I plan to hike to Laguna Churup, a stunning lake known for its turquoise waters and breathtaking mountain views. I've heard it's a challenging hike, but well worth the effort. I'll be sure to pack plenty of water and snacks, and I'm looking forward to sharing the experience with you all.
As I settle in for the night, I feel a sense of gratitude for this opportunity to explore Huaraz. The city has already captivated me with its blend of culture, history, and natural beauty. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.
It's been a fulfilling first day in Huaraz. From the bustling Main Square to the serene Iglesia Del Señor De La Soledad, every moment was a new discovery. The culinary scene here is vibrant, and I enjoyed sampling local delicacies at Hierba Buena Restaurante and Trivio Resto Bar. I also managed to find some unique souvenirs at Arisha Andean Store and enjoyed a relaxing evening at Lliclla Rooftop Bar. Huaraz is truly a gem, and I'm excited for what lies ahead.
Until tomorrow,
