Discover the magic of Huaraz: Explore Shansha, savor local cuisine, and witness breathtaking sunsets in the Peruvian Andes.
A Day of Andean Wonders
Today was a beautiful blend of cultural immersion and natural splendor. From exploring a charming village to witnessing a sunset that painted the sky with unforgettable colors, Huaraz continues to surprise and delight me. It's days like these that remind me why I embarked on this solo journey in the first place – to discover the hidden gems and breathtaking landscapes that our world has to offer.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Hierba Buena Restaurante. I decided to try a traditional Peruvian breakfast, which consisted of tamales and fresh juice. It was a delightful way to fuel up for the day's adventures. The restaurant had a cozy, local feel, and I enjoyed watching the town slowly wake up as I ate. It reminded me of the simple joys of life back in Douliu, where the day starts early and is filled with the promise of hard work and honest living.

After breakfast, I made my way to Centro Poblado de Shansha. The journey itself was an experience, with winding roads offering panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. Shansha is a hidden gem, a small village nestled amidst the Andes. As I wandered through its streets, I was struck by the warmth and hospitality of the locals. I spent some time observing their daily life, admiring the traditional houses, and soaking in the peaceful atmosphere. It was a humbling experience to witness a community so deeply connected to its roots and traditions. The crisp mountain air and the sounds of nature created a serene atmosphere perfect for relaxation and exploration.

I couldn't help but reflect on how different life is here compared to Kelowna. While I appreciate the modern comforts and opportunities that Canada offers, there's something incredibly grounding about being in a place where life moves at a slower pace and where community bonds are strong.
For lunch, I decided to indulge in the culinary delights of Wayta - El Chef Andino. This restaurant is known for its innovative take on traditional Andean dishes. I ordered the lomo saltado, a classic Peruvian stir-fry, and it was an explosion of flavors. The chef clearly takes pride in using fresh, locally sourced ingredients, and the presentation was impeccable. It was a truly memorable meal that showcased the best of Peruvian cuisine.

The beauty of travel lies not just in seeing new places, but in experiencing new perspectives and connecting with different cultures.
After lunch, I made a stop at Andes Camping Mountain Shop. Although I wasn’t planning any major hikes for the remainder of my trip, I wanted to pick up a few souvenirs and maybe a warmer hat. The staff were incredibly helpful and knowledgeable, offering advice on the best gear and trails in the area. I ended up buying a beautiful hand-woven scarf made from alpaca wool, a perfect reminder of my time in the Andes.

As the afternoon drew to a close, I headed to Lugar especial para ver sunsets. And it certainly lived up to its name. As the sun began its descent, the sky transformed into a canvas of vibrant colors. The Andes mountains provided a majestic backdrop, and the entire scene was simply breathtaking. I sat there in awe, feeling grateful for the opportunity to witness such natural beauty. It was a moment of pure serenity, a perfect ending to a day filled with exploration and discovery.

For dinner, I chose Kaypacha Restaurante. The restaurant embraces the Andean cosmovision, dividing the world into three levels: Hanan Pacha (the world of the gods), Kaypacha (the world of here, or the terrestrial world), and Uku Pacha (the world below, or of the dead). I enjoyed a traditional Peruvian meal while soaking in the atmosphere.

Reflecting on the day, I feel a deep sense of gratitude for the experiences I've had here in Huaraz. This solo journey has allowed me to step outside of my comfort zone, challenge my assumptions, and connect with people and places in a way that I never thought possible. It's a reminder that life is meant to be lived fully, with curiosity, courage, and an open heart.
Tomorrow marks the final day of my adventure in Huaraz. My itinerary includes visiting Rio Seco and Calle San Juan. I plan to have breakfast at Encuentro Restaurant & Bar, lunch at Taita, and a final dinner at Jose Olaya. I'm also hoping to check out Lavitola, a local bar, for one last taste of Huaraz nightlife. While I'm excited to return home to Mei-Ling and Lin, I know that a part of me will always remain here in the Andes. The memories and experiences I've gained will stay with me long after I've left, shaping my perspective and enriching my life in countless ways.
This trip has not only allowed me to see new places, but also to see myself in a new light. It has reaffirmed the importance of embracing new experiences, connecting with different cultures, and finding beauty in the simple moments of life. As I prepare for my final day in Huaraz, I am filled with a sense of anticipation and gratitude. I know that this is not the end of my adventures, but rather the beginning of a new chapter in my life, one filled with curiosity, courage, and a deep appreciation for the world around me.
