Family Art Adventure on Naoshima Island
Day 5: A Day of Coastal Charms and Artistic Wonders on Naoshima
Discover Naoshima's hidden gems: serene coastal views, unique fishing experiences, and tranquil parks, blending art and nature seamlessly.
Coastal Explorations and Artistic Finds
Today was all about venturing off the beaten path and discovering the quieter, yet equally captivating, corners of Naoshima. It’s amazing how much this island has to offer beyond the famous museums, and I was eager to soak in its natural beauty and local charm.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Issen. I opted for the traditional Japanese set meal with tofu, rice, miso, and vegetables. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploration. Aisha was particularly fond of the miso soup, declaring it even better than what I make at home! I must admit, the chef at Issen has some serious skills.
First on our list was Tsunosaki, a scenic spot known for its breathtaking coastal views. The drive there was stunning, with glimpses of the sparkling Seto Inland Sea between the trees. When we arrived, the view was even more spectacular than I had imagined. The rugged coastline met the calm, blue waters, creating a scene that felt both wild and serene. I spent a good hour just taking photos and breathing in the fresh sea air. Umar and Aisha enjoyed exploring the rocky shore, collecting seashells and spotting tiny crabs. It was a perfect family moment, away from the crowds and immersed in nature's beauty.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found not in grand museums, but in the quiet corners of nature, where the soul can breathe and the heart can find peace.
Next, we headed to the Naoshima Fishing Park, hoping to try our luck at catching some local fish. I must confess, I'm not much of a fisherwoman, but the idea of spending time by the sea was too appealing to resist. The park itself was well-maintained, with all the necessary amenities for a day of fishing. Umar, ever the enthusiastic one, rented a rod and some bait, while Aisha and I watched with amusement. After a few unsuccessful attempts, Umar finally managed to reel in a small sea bream. Aisha was ecstatic, and we all celebrated his victory with high-fives and laughter. We decided to release the fish back into the sea, feeling content with our brief encounter with Naoshima's marine life.

For lunch, we decided to try Perma_Naoshima, a ramen restaurant that had been recommended to me. The restaurant had a cozy and inviting atmosphere. The ramen was delicious, with a rich and savory broth that warmed us from the inside out. Aisha, who is usually a picky eater, surprised us by devouring her entire bowl. Umar and I shared a plate of local pickles, which added a tangy and refreshing contrast to the ramen. It was a truly satisfying meal that gave us a taste of Naoshima's culinary scene.

After lunch, we made our way to Yokobou Park, a tranquil green space offering panoramic views of the island. The park was a welcome respite from the sun, with plenty of shady trees and benches to relax on. Aisha immediately ran off to explore the playground, while Umar and I took a leisurely stroll through the park's winding paths. The views from the top of the park were simply stunning, with vistas of the coastline, the surrounding islands, and the sparkling sea. It was the perfect spot to reflect on our day and appreciate the beauty of Naoshima.

Before heading back to My Lodge Naoshima, we stopped by Mikazukishoten, a charming little shop known for its specialty coffee and local souvenirs. I had read about their coffee and was eager to try it for myself. The shop was small and cozy, with a rustic-chic decor that I absolutely loved. I ordered a latte, while Umar opted for an espresso. Aisha, of course, chose a sweet treat – a salt donut, which she declared was the best donut she had ever tasted. As we sipped our drinks and browsed the souvenirs, I couldn't help but feel a sense of contentment. This little shop perfectly captured the essence of Naoshima – a blend of art, culture, and local charm. I picked up a few small gifts for friends back home, wanting to share a piece of this special island with them.

For dinner, we decided to try Yuunagi, a restaurant near the port known for its flounder dishes. The restaurant was bustling with locals and tourists alike, creating a lively and welcoming atmosphere. We ordered the flounder set meal, which included fried flounder, sashimi, and simmered flounder. The fish was incredibly fresh and flavorful, a testament to Naoshima's commitment to local ingredients. Aisha, who is usually hesitant to try new foods, surprised us by enjoying the fried flounder. It was a delicious end to a day of coastal explorations and artistic finds.

As I sit here writing this, I can't help but feel grateful for the experiences we had today. Naoshima is more than just an art island; it's a place where nature, culture, and community come together to create something truly special. Tomorrow, we're off to Teshima Island, and I'm excited to see what artistic adventures await us there. We plan to visit the Teshima Art Museum, explore the unique galleries, and perhaps even relax at the Honmura Lounge & Archive in the evening. I’ve heard so much about Teshima's serene beauty, and I can't wait to experience it firsthand. Good night from Naoshima!
