Family Art Adventure on Naoshima Island
Day 2: Honmura's Soulful Art: A Day of Discovery in Naoshima's Art House Project
Immerse yourself in Naoshima's Honmura district, exploring the Art House Project, local cuisine, and cultural gems with the family.
Art and Soul in Honmura
Today was a day of wandering through art and history, a gentle immersion into the soul of Naoshima's Honmura district. The Art House Project was our main focus, a collection of transformed spaces that breathed new life into old homes and buildings. Aisha was particularly excited, her little eyes wide with curiosity as we stepped into each unique installation. Even Umar, who usually prefers the hustle of cityscapes, seemed captivated by the quiet beauty and thoughtful creativity on display.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Café Ippo. I'd read about their vegan options, and since I'm trying to incorporate more plant-based meals into our diet, I was eager to try it. It was a charming little spot, feeling more like someone's home than a café. Aisha loved the apple slices the staff gave us. It was a delightful way to start our exploration of Honmura. The weather was mild, with a slight breeze rustling through the traditional Japanese gardens we passed. May in Naoshima is proving to be quite pleasant!
Art isn't just something you see; it's something you experience, something that changes the way you perceive the world.
Our first stop in the Art House Project was Minamidera.

Designed by the renowned architect Tadao Ando, it houses a work by James Turrell that plays with your perception of light. I had made reservations in advance, which I highly recommend. The experience was truly unique; a lesson in how light and darkness can shape our understanding of space. Aisha was a little nervous at first, but she held my hand tight, and by the end, she was giggling about how our eyes played tricks on us. Umar was impressed by the architecture and the seamless blend of Ando's design with Turrell's art. It's amazing how Naoshima brings together art and architecture so beautifully.
Next, we wandered over to Kadoya, a 200-year-old restored residence.

The main artwork, Sea of Time '98 by Tatsuo Miyajima, features digital counters submerged in water. It was mesmerizing to watch the numbers flicker and change, each one representing the passage of time. Aisha was fascinated by the lights, and Umar appreciated the way the artist incorporated modern technology into such a traditional space. It really made you think about the connection between the past and the present.
For lunch, we found ourselves at Raumen Tsumu.

We were ready for some comfort food, and this cozy ramen shop, popular with the locals, hit the spot. Aisha slurped down her noodles with gusto, and Umar and I enjoyed the flavorful broth and perfectly cooked ramen. They even had vegan options, which was a pleasant surprise. It's these little discoveries that make traveling so rewarding.
Our final stop for the Art House Project was Haisha, the former home and office of a dentist.

This was perhaps the most eccentric of the houses, transformed by artist Shinro Ohtake into a collage of sculptures and found objects. The quirky details and unexpected elements, including a replica of the Statue of Liberty, made it a feast for the eyes. Aisha was a little bewildered by it all, but she loved finding hidden surprises in every corner. Umar, ever the observant one, pointed out the way the artist incorporated elements of the building's past into the artwork. It was a fascinating blend of chaos and creativity.
After our artistic adventures, we decided to unwind with a drink at Bar SARU.

This cozy spot, known as the nightspot of Naoshima, had a welcoming atmosphere. While Aisha enjoyed a juice box, Umar and I sampled some local Naoshima beer. It was the perfect way to relax and reflect on the day's experiences.
Tonight, we enjoyed a delicious dinner at Aisunao.

This Japanese restaurant, housed in a traditional building, specializes in dishes made with organically grown rice and vegetables. I was thrilled to discover that they offer many vegan-friendly options, including desserts. The food was flavorful and nourishing, and the atmosphere was peaceful and inviting. Aisha enjoyed the cute rice bowl designs. It was a wonderful way to end our day in Honmura.
As I sit here writing this, I'm filled with a sense of contentment. Today was about more than just seeing art; it was about connecting with the community, savoring local flavors, and experiencing the unique spirit of Naoshima. And tomorrow, we're off to see the famous pumpkins and experience the Naoshima Public Bath I Love Yu. I can't wait to see what other treasures this island holds!
It's funny, isn't it? How a small island in Japan can hold so much beauty and inspiration. It reminds me of a quote I once read:
Travel is more than the seeing of sights; it is the change that goes on, deep and permanent, in the ideas of living.
Good night from Naoshima! I can't wait to share more of our adventures with you all.
