A Final Bow to Naoshima's Art

As our family art adventure on Naoshima Island draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible blend of art, culture, and nature we've experienced. Today was all about soaking in the last moments, revisiting favorite spots, and discovering a few hidden gems we'd missed. It’s hard to believe our ten days here are already over; it feels like just yesterday we were stepping off the ferry, eager to explore this artistic haven. I'm so grateful for the memories we've created together, and I know we'll cherish them for years to come.

Our final day began with a hearty breakfast at Café Ippo. This charming café, near the Art House Project, felt like stepping into a traditional Japanese home. The aroma of Japanese coffee filled the air as we settled in, ready to enjoy a meal before our day of exploration. Aisha was particularly excited about the traditional snacks on offer, and Umar enjoyed chatting with the friendly staff. It was the perfect way to start our day, surrounded by the warmth and hospitality that Naoshima is known for.

After breakfast, we made our way to the Cultural Melting Bath: Project for Naoshima. Created by Cai Guo-Qiang, this outdoor installation at the Benesse House Museum is more than just a visual experience. It's a space where art and relaxation blend seamlessly. Although the bathing experience itself is exclusively for Benesse House hotel guests, we were able to admire the artistry and concept behind it. The arrangement of Taiko stones and the Jacuzzi, designed according to Feng Shui principles, was truly captivating. The serene atmosphere and the views of the Seto Inland Sea made it a perfect spot for contemplation.

Art isn't just something you see; it's something you experience, something that becomes a part of you.

Next on our list was Kasaneiwa, a site that blends natural beauty with a touch of mystery. After climbing a long stairway and narrow mountain road, we were rewarded with a view of the Seto Inland Sea. The precariously balanced rocks of Kasaneiwa seemed to defy gravity, creating a sense of wonder and awe. Aisha was fascinated by the rocks, comparing them to a real-life puzzle. It was a reminder of the simple, yet profound, beauty that can be found in nature, and the way it harmonizes with the artistic spirit of Naoshima.

Our artistic pilgrimage continued with a visit to Drink a Cup of Tea, a work by Kazuo Katase. This installation, featuring a Japanese-style blue metal cup perched on a stone platform, is a subtle yet thought-provoking piece. Katase drew inspiration from a Buddhist Zen ritual with teacups, aiming to evoke truth-seeking spirits. It was a quiet, contemplative spot, inviting us to pause and reflect on our journey.

For lunch, we decided to try Raumen Tsumu, a local favorite known for its comforting ramen dishes. This cozy spot is popular with locals, and it's easy to see why. The ramen was delicious, and the atmosphere was warm and inviting. Aisha enjoyed the udon curry, while Umar and I savored the spicy mince meat ramen. It was a comforting and satisfying meal, perfect for refueling after a day of exploring.

As the day wound down, we chose to have dinner at Perma_Naoshima. This restaurant, renovated from an old barber shop, offers a unique dining experience with a focus on locally sourced seafood and vegetables. While they couldn't accommodate a fully vegan menu, we were able to enjoy a variety of dishes that highlighted the flavors of the Seto Inland Sea. The atmosphere was cozy and inviting, making it a perfect spot to reflect on our adventures.

To cap off our final night, Umar and I decided to sneak away for a quick drink at Bar SARU. This small bar has a relaxed, almost bohemian vibe, with surf videos playing on the television and graffiti adorning the walls. It was the perfect place to unwind and soak in the island's laid-back atmosphere. We enjoyed a couple of local beers and chatted with some of the other patrons, sharing stories and laughter. It was a fitting end to our Naoshima adventure, a final toast to the art, culture, and community that had welcomed us with open arms.

Naoshima Island has truly captured our hearts. It's a place where art isn't confined to museums but permeates every aspect of life. The blend of modern art installations with the island's natural beauty and traditional culture creates a unique and unforgettable experience. As we prepare to leave tomorrow, I know that we'll carry the spirit of Naoshima with us, inspiring us to see the world with new eyes and to appreciate the beauty that can be found in the most unexpected places.

Tomorrow marks the end of our trip, and while I'm sad to leave this enchanting island, I'm also excited to return home with a renewed sense of creativity and appreciation for the arts. I hope our journey has inspired you to explore the world and discover the hidden gems that await!

Today's weather was mild, with clear skies, and the temperature ranged from 15 to 18°C. It was perfect for walking around and exploring the island. The breeze was gentle, and the sun was warm, making it a truly enjoyable day.

Looking back on our time here, I’m reminded of how much I value these family trips. They’re not just about seeing new places; they’re about creating shared experiences and strengthening our bonds. Whether it was marveling at the art installations, trying new foods, or simply enjoying each other’s company, every moment has been precious. And as we prepare to return to our everyday lives in Markham, I know we'll carry these memories with us, a reminder of the beauty and wonder that exists beyond our familiar surroundings.

And now, as the sun sets on our final day in Naoshima, I raise a glass to art, adventure, and family. Cheers to the memories we've made and the ones we'll continue to create!
