A Day of Breathtaking Vistas

Today was a day of scenic drives and stunning viewpoints that truly captured the essence of Geirangerfjord's beauty. Jana, Maximilian, and I set out to explore the renowned Geirangervegen (Scenic Road) and the Breiddalen Valley Lookout, eager to soak in the majestic landscapes that this region of Norway is so famous for. The crisp, cold air and the promise of panoramic views made for an unforgettable Sunday.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at the Grande Fjord Hotel. The hotel's restaurant, Hyskje, located on the top floor, offered a modern Scandinavian buffet with stunning views of the Geirangerfjord. It’s amazing how the fjord looks different every morning, depending on the light and weather. Maximilian was particularly excited about the freshly baked bread and local cheeses, while Jana enjoyed the selection of fresh fruits. I appreciated the strong coffee, which was much needed to kickstart our day of exploration.

After breakfast, we hopped in our rental car and set off along Turistveg: Geirangervegen (Scenic Road). This road, also known as Fv63, is a marvel of engineering, winding its way through steep cliffs and offering breathtaking views at every turn. Despite the cold, the drive was smooth, and the car handled the winding roads with ease. We made frequent stops to take photos and simply admire the scenery. The deep blue waters of the fjord contrasted sharply with the snow-dusted mountains, creating a picture-perfect landscape.

Sometimes, the most scenic roads in life are the detours you didn't plan to take.

One of the highlights of the drive was the numerous waterfalls cascading down the mountainsides. Even in late November, the falls were still flowing strong, a testament to the region's abundant water sources. Maximilian was fascinated by the sheer force of the water, and Jana and I enjoyed capturing the beauty through our camera lenses. The Geirangervegen is more than just a road; it's an experience, a journey through some of Norway's most dramatic natural landscapes.

Next on our itinerary was the Breiddalen Valley Lookout. Located right off RV63, this spot offers panoramic views of the Breiddalen Valley. The small red hut perched on the rock provided a striking contrast to the rugged mountain landscape, making for a perfect photo opportunity. We spent a good hour here, simply soaking in the vista. Maximilian enjoyed climbing on the rocks, while Jana and I took turns capturing the expansive views. The valley stretched out before us, a tapestry of greens, browns, and whites, a true testament to nature's artistry.

For lunch, we stopped at Frøysa restaurantdrift. This cozy restaurant is known for its diverse menu and stunning views of the fjord. We opted for a table with an outdoor view, despite the chill in the air, and enjoyed a hearty meal of local specialties. Maximilian devoured a pizza, while Jana and I shared a plate of spare ribs, which were cooked to perfection. The warm, comforting food was the perfect antidote to the cold weather, and the view made the experience even more special.

After lunch, we decided to do a little shopping at ROST. This charming home goods store offers a variety of distinctive Norwegian crafts and household items. Jana was particularly interested in the hand-knitted sweaters and woolen socks, while Maximilian picked out a small wooden Viking ship as a souvenir. I found a beautiful photograph of Geirangerfjord to add to my collection. It’s nice to support local artisans and take home a piece of Norwegian culture.

As evening approached, we headed to Låna Restaurant & Bar for dinner. This restaurant is known for its authentic Norwegian flavors and cozy atmosphere. We started with some local craft beers and then ordered a selection of traditional dishes. Maximilian tried the fish and chips, while Jana and I indulged in a seafood platter, which was incredibly fresh and flavorful. The ambiance was warm and inviting, making it a perfect end to a day of exploration.

Today was a reminder of why we love traveling as a family. The shared experiences, the stunning scenery, and the simple joy of being together make it all worthwhile. Even though the weather was cold, the warmth of our family bond kept us cozy throughout the day. I almost forgot my raincoat but luckily the weather was on our side today, unlike tomorrow which promises to be wet.

Tomorrow is our last day in Geirangerfjord, and we plan to visit Blair's View Point for one last panoramic view of this incredible landscape. We'll have breakfast at Berserk Bar & Grill, lunch at Geiranger Brygge, and a farewell dinner at Brasserie Posten. I'm also hoping to sneak in a visit to MILK Bar & Lounge for a nightcap. It’s going to be a bittersweet day, saying goodbye to this natural wonder, but I know we’ll carry the memories with us for a lifetime.

As I sit here writing this, sipping on a warm cup of tea, I can't help but feel grateful for this experience. Geirangerfjord has truly captured our hearts, and I know we'll be back someday to explore more of its hidden gems. Until then, I'll cherish the photos, the memories, and the feeling of awe that this place has instilled in me. The weather forecast for tomorrow is not promising so I will make sure I do not forget my raincoat again!

The travel bug is biting again already and I am starting to think where our next adventure will take us!
