Elevated Experiences
Today was all about embracing the heights and savoring the local flavors of Geirangerfjord. With Jana and Maximilian by my side, I set out to explore some of the most breathtaking viewpoints and charming establishments this region has to offer. It was a day filled with stunning vistas, hearty meals, and delightful discoveries, making it a perfect addition to our family adventure.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Geiranger Brygge. The crisp morning air was invigorating as we stepped out, ready to explore. Maximilian was particularly excited, his boundless energy a constant reminder of the simple joys of travel. Jana, ever the pragmatist, made sure we were all bundled up, knowing how quickly the weather can change in these parts. After a quick breakfast, we headed towards our first destination: Djupvatnet.
The drive to Djupvatnet was an experience in itself. The winding roads offered panoramic views of the fjord, with snow-dusted peaks rising majestically in the distance. As we ascended, the landscape transformed into a winter wonderland, with snow blanketing the trees and the air growing noticeably colder. Djupvatnet, with its serene, icy waters, was a sight to behold. The stillness of the lake, surrounded by snow-covered mountains, created a sense of profound tranquility. Maximilian, of course, couldn't resist throwing a few snowballs, his laughter echoing across the silent landscape. I snapped a few photos, trying to capture the ethereal beauty of the scene, knowing that no image could truly do it justice.

After Djupvatnet, we continued our journey to Ørnesvingen Viewpoint. The road leading up to Ørnesvingen, with its eleven thrilling hairpin bends, was an adventure in itself. Jana, who isn't the biggest fan of heights, gripped the dashboard a little tighter with each turn, but even she couldn't deny the breathtaking views that unfolded before us. Reaching the top, we were rewarded with a panoramic vista of the Geirangerfjord, its steep mountainsides, and the iconic Seven Sisters waterfalls. The viewpoint was partially wheelchair accessible, making it easy for everyone to enjoy the scenery.

Sometimes, the most rewarding experiences are the ones that take you to new heights, both literally and figuratively.
The Geirangerfjord stretched out before us in all its glory. The Seven Sisters waterfalls cascaded down the cliffs, their icy streams a testament to the raw power of nature. Across from them, the Suitor waterfall added to the dramatic landscape. Maximilian was fascinated by the glass decoration at the viewpoint, created by artist May Elin Eikaas-Bjerk, its intricate design reflecting the beauty of the fjord. We spent a good hour at Ørnesvingen, simply soaking in the view and capturing as many photos as possible. Despite the cold, the beauty of the landscape warmed us from the inside out.
For lunch, we decided to try Låna Restaurant & Bar, hoping for some traditional Norwegian fare. The restaurant, with its cozy ambiance, was a welcome respite from the cold. We indulged in hearty dishes that warmed us from the inside out. Maximilian, predictably, opted for something involving potatoes, while Jana and I decided to sample some local seafood. The meal was delicious and satisfying, the perfect fuel for the rest of our day's adventures.

In the late afternoon, as the sun began to dip below the horizon, we made our way to Geiranger Bryggeri. I was eager to sample some local brews, and this charming brewery seemed like the perfect spot. The brewery, nestled in the heart of Geiranger, offered a cozy and inviting atmosphere. I decided on a Vikingstøa Pale Ale, while Jana opted for a local cider. Maximilian, of course, stuck to juice, but he enjoyed the lively atmosphere nonetheless. The beer was excellent, its hoppy notes a perfect complement to the stunning views of the fjord. The staff were friendly and knowledgeable, happy to share stories about the brewery and the local area.

As the evening drew in, we headed back to our accommodation, our hearts full of the day's experiences. The Geirangerfjord had once again worked its magic, leaving us in awe of its natural beauty. We decided to have dinner at Geiranger Brygge again, as we enjoyed the atmosphere so much during breakfast. Maximilian was already fast asleep, dreaming of snowballs and waterfalls. Jana and I sat by the window, sipping our drinks and reflecting on the day. We talked about the stunning views from Djupvatnet and Ørnesvingen, the delicious lunch at Låna Restaurant & Bar, and the delightful beers at Geiranger Bryggeri.
Tomorrow, we plan to explore Geirangerfjorden Marina AS and Promenada Geiranger Port. Maximilian is already excited about the prospect of seeing more boats, and I am looking forward to capturing more of the fjord's beauty through my lens. We might also visit Geiranger Sjokolade Fjordnær, to get some local chocolate. As I write this, I am filled with a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to share these experiences with my family. Geirangerfjord, with its majestic landscapes and charming establishments, has truly captured our hearts.
The Geiranger Light Art Festival may be coming up in February, but even in November, Geiranger has its own charm. The FilmFjordFestival is also coming up, but we will have left by then. Perhaps we will return another year to experience these events.
As I close this entry, I raise a glass to adventure, to family, and to the unforgettable beauty of Geirangerfjord. Prost!
The day was a reminder that sometimes the best travel experiences are the ones that combine natural beauty with local culture. From the serene waters of Djupvatnet to the panoramic views of Ørnesvingen, and the delightful flavors of Geiranger Brygge, every moment was a treasure. I am already looking forward to what tomorrow will bring, knowing that Geirangerfjord still has many more wonders to reveal. I am glad we decided to visit in November, as there are fewer tourists than in the summer months. This allowed us to have a more intimate experience with the landscape.
Our adventure continues, and I can't wait to share more of it with you all. Stay tuned for the next installment, as we delve deeper into the heart of Norway's natural wonders.
I’m also making a mental note to pack a raincoat and extra batteries for my camera next time! It's the little things that can make a big difference when you're out exploring the world's most stunning landscapes. Good night from Geiranger!
